Dataset on fire resistance analysis of FRP-strengthened concrete beams.

ABSTRACT: Machine learning (ML) has emerged as an efficient and feasible technique for tackling engineering problems. Despite the numerous advantages, the implementation of ML for evaluating the fire resistance of structural members is relatively scarce, primarily due to the lack of a reliable database with a substantial number of data points. To address this knowledge gap, this paper presents a comprehensive database on the fire performance of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The database comprises over 21,000 experimental and numerical data points with varying parameters, including various geometric dimensions, FRP-strengthening levels, steel reinforcement ratio, insulation thickness and configuration, material properties, and applied load levels. The database can be implemented to train ML algorithms for developing autonomous models for predicting the fire resistance of FRP-strengthened concrete beams with varying parameters.

Post-Fire Characteristics of Concrete Beams Reinforced with Hybrid FRP Bars.

Project description:One of the main concerns of experimental and numerical investigations regarding the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) members is their fire resistance to elevated temperatures and structural performance at and after fire exposure. However, the data currently available on the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced members related to elevated temperatures are scarce, specifically relating to the strength capacity of beams after being subjected to elevated temperatures. This paper investigates the residual strength capacity of beams strengthened internally with various (FRP) reinforcement types after being subjected to high temperatures, reflecting the conditions of a fire. The testing was made for concrete beams reinforced with three different types of FRP bars: (i) basalt-FRP (BFRP), (ii) hybrid FRP with carbon and basalt fibers (HFRP) and (iii) nano-hybrid FRP (nHFRP), with modification of the epoxy matrix of the rebar. Tested beams were first loaded at 50% of their ultimate strength capacity, then unloaded before being heated in a furnace and allowed to cool, and finally reloaded flexurally until failure. The results show an atypical behavior observed for HFRP bars and nHFRP bars reinforced beams, where after a certain temperature threshold the deflection began to decrease. The authors suggest that this phenomenon is connected with the thermal expansion coefficient of the carbon fibers present in HFRP and nHFRP bars and therefore creep can appear in those fibers, which causes an effect of "prestressing" of the beams.

Flax, Basalt, E-Glass FRP and Their Hybrid FRP Strengthened Wood Beams: An Experimental Study.

Project description:In this study, the structural behavior of small-scale wood beams externally strengthened with various fiber strengthened polymer (FRP) composites (i.e., flax FRP (FFRP), basalt FRP (BFRP), E-glass FRP ("E" stands for electrical resistance, GFRP) and their hybrid FRP composites (HFRP) with different fiber configurations) were investigated. FRP strengthened wood specimens were tested under bending and the effects of different fiber materials, thicknesses and the layer arrangements of the FRP on the flexural behavior of strengthened wood beams were discussed. The beams strengthened with flax FRP showed a higher flexural loading capacity in comparison to the beams with basalt FRP. Flax FRP provided a comparable enhancement in the maximum load with beams strengthened with glass FRP at the same number of FRP layers. In addition, all the hybrid FRPs (i.e., a combination of flax, basalt and E-glass FRP) in this study exhibited no significant enhancement in load carrying capacity but larger maximum deflection than the single type of FRP composite. It was also found that the failure modes of FRP strengthened beams changed from tensile failure to FRP debonding as their maximum bending load increased.

Strut deformation in CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete deep beams.

Project description:Strut-and-tie model (STM) method evolved as one of the most useful designs for shear critical structures and discontinuity regions (D-regions). It provides widespread applications in the design of deep beams as recommended by many codes. The estimation of bottle-shaped strut dimensions, as a main constituent of STM, is essential in design calculations. The application of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) as lightweight material with high tensile strength for strengthening D-regions is currently on the increase. However, the CFRP-strengthening of deep beam complicates the dimensions estimation of bottle-shaped strut. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effect of CFRP-strengthening on the deformation of RC strut in the design of deep beams. Two groups of specimens comprising six unstrengthened and six CFRP-strengthened RC deep beams with the shear span to the effective depth ratios (a/d) of 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 were constructed in this research. These beams were tested under four-point bending configuration. The deformation of struts was experimentally evaluated using the values of strain along and perpendicular to the strut centreline. The evaluation was made by the comparisons between unstrengthened and CFRP-strengthened struts regarding the widening and shortening. The key variables were a/d ratio and applied load level.

Experimental Research on Concrete Beams Reinforced with High Ductility Steel Bars and Strengthened with a Reactive Powder Concrete Layer in the Compression Zone.

Project description:The article describes four-point bending tests of three reinforced concrete beams with identical cross-sections, spans, and high-ductility steel reinforcement systems. Two beams were strengthened in the compressed section with a thin layer of reactive powder concrete (RPC) bonded with evenly spaced stirrups. Their remaining sections, and the third reference beam, were made of ordinary concrete. Measurements of their deflections, strains and axis curvature; ultrasonic tests; and a photogrammetric analysis of the beams are the main results of the study. For one of the beams with the RPC, the load was increased in one stage. For the two remaining beams, the load was applied in four stages, increasing the maximum load from stage to stage in order to allow the analysis of the damage evolution before reaching the bending resistance. The most important effect observed was the stable behaviour of the strengthened beams in the post-critical state, as opposed to the reference beam, which had about two to three times less energy-absorbing capacity in this range. Moreover, thanks to the use of the RPC layer, the process of concrete cover delamination in the compression zone was significantly reduced, the high ductility of the rebars was fully utilized during the formation of plastic hinges, and the bending capacity was increased by approximately 12%.

Strengthening of Bent LVL Beams with Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) FRP Reinforcement.

Project description:The topic of the article is the analysis of the static work of unreinforced and reinforced with composite material timber beams under bending tests. The results of the experimental tests and a brief outline of the characteristics of the internal reinforcement of wood structures are presented. Experimental tests were performed on full-scale beams made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) with nominal dimensions of 45 × 200 × 3400 mm. Two strips of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement were glued into rectangular grooves in the component bottom with two-component epoxy resin (0.62% reinforcement percentage). The reinforcement mainly affected the enhancement of the maximum bending moment values evaluated at the points of application as having concentrated forces of 32% and 24% in comparison to the unreinforced elements. Increases of 11% and 7% in the global modulus of elasticity in the bending and stiffness coefficients were achieved, respectively. The failure of the reference beams was caused by exceeding the tensile strength of the LVL. The reinforced elements were characterized by a greater variation in failure mode, resulting from tension, compression or lateral torsional buckling. The strain profile reading showed a higher utilization of the compression characteristic of veneer in specimens reinforced with carbon laminates.

Characterization and Simulation of the Bond Response of NSM FRP Reinforcement in Concrete.

Project description:The near-surface mounted (NSM) technique with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement as strengthening system for concrete structures has been broadly studied during the last years. The efficiency of the NSM FRP-to-concrete joint highly depends on the bond between both materials, which is characterized by a local bond-slip law. This paper studies the effect of the shape of the local bond-slip law and its parameters on the global response of the NSM FRP joint in terms of load capacity, effective bond length, slip, shear stress, and strain distribution along the bonded length, which are essential parameters on the strengthening design. A numerical procedure based on the finite difference method to solve the governing equations of the FRP-to-concrete joint is developed. Pull-out single shear specimens are tested in order to experimentally validate the numerical results. Finally, a parametric study is performed. The effect of the bond-shear strength slip at the bond strength, maximum slip, and friction branch on the parameters previously described is presented and discussed.

The Fire Resistance Performance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Columns with Different Concrete Compressive Strengths.

Project description:In order to ascertain the fire resistance performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) components with different concrete compressive strengths, four full-scaled concrete columns were designed and tested under high temperature. Two of the four specimens were constructed by normal concrete with compressive strength ratings of C20 and C30, respectively, while the others were made from recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) concrete of C30 and C40, respectively. Identical constant axial forces were applied to specimens while being subjected to simulated building fire conditions in a laboratory furnace. Several parameters from the experimental results were comparatively analyzed, including the temperature change, vertical displacement, lateral deflection, fire endurance, and failure characteristics of specimens. The temperature field of specimens was simulated with ABAQUS Software (ABAQUS Inc., Provindence, RI, USA) and the results agreed quite well with those from the experiments. Results show that the rate of heat transfer from the surface to the interior of the column increases with the increase of the concrete's compressive strength for both RAC columns and normal concrete columns. Under the same initial axial force ratio, for columns with the same cross section, those with lower concrete compressive strengths demonstrate better fire resistance performance. The fire resistance performance of RAC columns is better than that of normal concrete columns, with the same concrete compressive strength.

Constitutive Behavior and Finite Element Analysis of FRP Composite and Concrete Members.

Project description:The present study concerns compressive and flexural constitutive models incorporated into an isoparametric beam finite element scheme for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete composites, using their multi-axial constitutive behavior. The constitutive behavior of concrete was treated in triaxial stress states as an orthotropic hypoelasticity-based formulation to determine the confinement effect of concrete from a three-dimensional failure surface in triaxial stress states. The constitutive behavior of the FRP composite was formulated from the two-dimensional classical lamination theory. To predict the flexural behavior of circular cross-section with FRP sheet and concrete composite, a layered discretization of cross-sections was incorporated into nonlinear isoparametric beam finite elements. The predicted constitutive behavior was validated by a comparison to available experimental results in the compressive and flexural beam loading test.

Study on mechanical properties of corroded concrete columns strengthened with SMA wires.

Project description:Ocean crossing bridges suffer from seawater corrosion all year round and their mechanical properties will be substantially diminished. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete columns corroded by seawater, SMA wire is used to restrain the reinforced concrete columns corroded by seawater to study their mechanical properties. 14 specimens were produced through the test, and the natural seawater corrosion was simulated by preparing a certain concentration of synthetic seawater. The mechanical properties of SMA strengthened specimens and unreinforced specimens are compared and analyzed, including failure mode, hysteresis curve, bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness and energy dissipation; the effects of different synthetic seawater corrosion concentrations on the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete columns are discussed. The results show that the bearing capacity and stiffness of reinforced concrete columns subjected to synthetic seawater corrosion are substantially diminished than those of uncorroded specimens, and the bearing capacity of specimens decreases more with the increase of synthetic seawater corrosion concentration; synthetic seawater corrosion has obscure effect on the ductility and energy dissipation performance of the specimens. The mechanical properties of the corroded specimens strengthened with SMA wire have been substantially enhanced, particularly the energy dissipation performance and bearing capacity have been notably enhanced, and the ductility and stiffness have also been somewhat enhanced. At the same time, based on the test, the finite element model is created according to the test specimen, while the accuracy of the model is verified, and the effects of the spacing and diameter of SMA wire, the strength of concrete and the thickness of protective layer on the mechanical properties of the specimen are analyzed.
