Rubuspuyumaensis, a new species of Rosaceae from Taiwan.

ABSTRACT:

Background

The genus Rubus L. (Rosaceae), comprising approximately 750 species and classified into 12 subgenera, is distributed worldwide and is one of the largest plant genera. In Taiwan, Rubus comprises 41 taxa, including 35 species, three varieties and three hybrids. Amongst the genus Rubus, the species, previously recorded as R.howii in Taiwan, was misidentified and this study recognised it as a new species.

New information

Due to its distribution mainly in south-eastern Taiwan, we named this new species as Rubuspuyumaensis, after the local aborigine tribe Puyuma. Taxonomic descriptions and colour photographs of the new species are provided to assist in identification. R.puyumaensis is most similar to R.howii and R.refractus. They can be distinguished by the colour of young leaves, leaf shape, arrangement of florets, trichomes of inflorescences, size of sepal lobes, petal colour, types and trichomes of filaments and the length of stamens and pistils.

Characterization and comparative analysis among plastome sequences of eight endemic Rubus (Rosaceae) species in Taiwan.

Project description:Genus Rubus represents the second largest genus of the family Rosaceae in Taiwan, with 41 currently recognized species across three subgenera (Chamaebatus, Idaoeobatus, and Malochobatus). Despite previous morphological and cytological studies, little is known regarding the overall phylogenetic relationships among the Rubus species in Taiwan, and their relationships to congeneric species in continental China. We characterized eight complete plastomes of Taiwan endemic Rubus species: subg. Idaeobatus (R. glandulosopunctatus, R. incanus, R. parviaraliifolius, R rubroangustifolius, R. taitoensis, and R. taiwanicolus) and subg. Malachobatus (R. kawakamii and R. laciniastostipulatus) to determine their phylogenetic relationships. The plastomes were highly conserved and the size of the complete plastome sequences ranged from 155,566 to 156,236 bp. The overall GC content ranged from 37.0 to 37.3%. The frequency of codon usage showed similar patterns among species, and 29 of the 73 common protein-coding genes were positively selected. The comparative phylogenomic analysis identified four highly variable intergenic regions (rps16/trnQ, petA/psbJ, rpl32/trnL-UAG, and trnT-UGU/trnL-UAA). Phylogenetic analysis of 31 representative complete plastomes within the family Rosaceae revealed three major lineages within Rubus in Taiwan. However, overall phylogenetic relationships among endemic species require broader taxon sampling to gain new insights into infrageneric relationships and their plastome evolution.

Rosafuningensis (Rosaceae), a new species from Yunnan, China.

Project description:A new species Rosafuningensis and its variant R.funingensisf.rosea, both collected from Yunnan Province, China, are, for the first time, documented and illustrated in this study. Morphological analysis in comparison with two related species in the wild, R.gigantea and R.rubus, presents distinguishable features through leaf surfaces, inflorescences and the shape of styles. R.funingensis leaf surfaces are abaxially villous, purple-red, pale green when mature, adaxially glabrous, dark green; inflorescences solitary or 2-5(7) in corymbose cyme; and styles connate into a column or not, exserted.

Three new species of Lachemilla (Rosaceae) from South America.

Project description:Three new species of Lachemilla (Rosaceae), two from Colombia and one from Peru, are described and illustrated. Lachemillarothmaleriana is characterized by its stout stems, sericeous-villous indumentum, and wide ascending sheaths with trilobate lateral lobes. Lachemillaargentea presents a unique combination of tripartite basal leaves with an adaxial silvery villous indumentum, and decumbent branches with verticillate lobed sheaths. Finally, Lachemillacyanea has distinctly basal reniform leaves with a blue-green color and hirsute pubescence. Phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear ribosomal cistron and multiple regions of the plastid genome revealed the allopolyploid origin of the three new taxa.

Eriobotryacrassifolia (Rosaceae), a new species from Yunnan Province, China.

Project description:The new species Eriobotryacrassifolia, collected from Yunnan Province, China, is characterised and illustrated. A phylogeny based on chloroplast genomes supported its closest affinity with E.tengyuehensis, while a phylogeny based on 197 single-copy nuclear genes supported its closest affinity with E.fragrans and E.deflexa. Morphologically, however, it resembles E.angustissima. Nevertheless, it can be easily distinguished from E.angustissima by its abaxially retroflexed and sharply serrate leaf margins, densely rusty tomentose inflorescences, and oblong or elliptic leaves.

Rubuskaznowskii (Rosaceae), a new bramble species from south-central Poland.

Project description:Based on field research in south-central Poland, supplemented with a review of herbarium materials, we identified a stable bramble biotype with a range large enough (190 km distance between the outermost stands) to be described as a new regional agamic species, Rubuskaznowskii sp.nov. It belongs to the series Subthyrsoidei(sect. Corylifolii). Although R.kaznowskii has a unique combination of features, it can be potentially mistaken for R.gothicus. It differs from the latter species in many aspects, including: pruinose primocanes, denser indumentum of the abaxial leaf surface, and more curved prickles on the petiole. R.kaznowskii has mainly been observed on rusty soils, in habitats of mixed coniferous and mixed broadleaf forests, usually in sunny places, along forest margins and roads, in clearings and roadside thickets.
