Midget cave spiders (Araneae, Leptonetidae) from Jiangxi and Fujian Province, China.

ABSTRACT: Eleven leptonetid species belonging to four genera collected in Jiangxi and Fujian Provinces, China are presented. Ten new species of midget cave spiders from southern China are diagnosed, described, and illustrated: Leptoneteladawu Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.yuanhaoi Yao & Liu, sp. nov. and L.zuojiashanensis Yao & Liu, sp. nov. from Jiangxi; Longileptonetaguadunensis Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.huboliao Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.jiaxiani Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.letuensis Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.renzhouensis Yao & Liu, sp. nov., L.tianmenensis Yao & Liu, sp. nov., and Pararanamingxuani Yao & Liu, sp. nov. from Fujian. Furthermore, Falcileptonetamonodactyla (Yin, Wang & Wang, 1984) is recorded from Jiangxi province for the first time. Distributions records are given for all investigated species.

Crab spiders (Araneae, Thomisidae) of Jinggang Mountain National Nature Reserve, Jiangxi Province, China.

Project description:A list of 34 thomisid species belonging to 21 genera collected in Jangxi Province of China is provided. Five new species are described: Angaeusxieluae Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), Lysitelessubspirellus Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Oxytatemucunica Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Phartalingxiufengica Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Stephanopisxiangzhouica Liu, sp. nov. (♀). A new combination is proposed: Ebelingiaforcipata (Song & Zhu, 1993) comb. nov. (ex. Ebrechtella Dahl, 1907). Previously unknown females of E.forcipata (Song & Zhu, 1993), Oxytatebicornis Liu, Liu & Xu, 2017, and Xysticuslesserti Schenkel, 1963 are described for the first time. Stephanopis O Pickard-Cambridge, 1869, a genus previously known from Australasia and South America, is recorded from the Asian mainland for the first time.

Therefore, none of the anyphaenid species has been recorded from this Province.New informationAnyphaenidae spiders were collected from Jinggangshan National Nature Reserve, Jiangxi Province, China, during the past ten years. A new tube spider species, Anyphaenaleidashi Yao & Liu, sp. nov. is diagnosed, described and illustrated. Moreover, three species including A.mogan Song & Chen, 1987, A.wuyi Zhang, Zhu & Song, 2005 and Rathalosxiushanensis (Song & Zhu, 1991) are recorded from Jiangxi Province for the first time. Distributions records are given for all investigated species.

A survey of pholcid spiders (Araneae, Pholcidae) from Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China.

Project description:The family Pholcidae C.L. Koch, 1850 is highly diverse in Guizhou Province, southwestern China, and currently contains four genera and 22 species. Nevertheless, the distribution of pholcid spiders is conspicuously patchy in Guizhou. Species from Guiyang are poorly studied, and only Pholcusspilis Zhu & Gong, 1991 has been recorded. A survey was undertaken for the first time to study the pholcids in Guiyang. A total of four species are reported, comprising Belisanayuhaoi Yang & Yao, sp. nov. and three other species: Leptopholcustanikawai Irie, 1999 (new record for Guiyang), Pholcusspilis Zhu & Gong, 1991 and Spermophorasenoculata (Dugès, 1836) (new record for Guizhou).

A survey of Phrurolithidae spiders from Jinggang Mountain National Nature Reserve, Jiangxi Province, China.

Project description:Phrurolithidae spiders were collected from Jinggang Mountain National Nature Reserve, Jiangxi Province, China, during the past six years. The new genus Alboculus Liu, gen. nov., with the type species Phrurolithus zhejiangensis Song & Kim, 1991, is described, and its previously unknown male is described for the first time. Furthermore, seven new species of Otacilia are described: O. acutangula Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), O. bijiashanica Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), O. longtanica Liu, sp. nov. (♀), O. ovoidea Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), O. shenshanica Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), O. subovoidea Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), and O. xiaoxiica Liu, sp. nov. (♀). All species are illustrated with photographs and their distributions are mapped.

DNA barcodes reveal population-dependent cryptic diversity and various cases of sympatry of Korean leptonetid spiders (Araneae: Leptonetidae).

Project description:Leptonetidae are tiny, rarely encountered spiders that mainly inhabit moist environments, such as caves, leaf litter, and rock piles. Because they are microhabitat specialists, most leptonetid species have short-range endemism, and rarely occur in sympatry. Their small size, relatively simple habitus features and reproductive organ structure increase the difficulty of identification. The identification of leptonetids and other spiders may also be time-consuming due to their sexual dimorphism, polymorphism, and lack of diagnostic characteristics in juveniles. DNA barcoding has been used as an effective tool for species identification to overcome these obstacles. Herein, we conducted a test of DNA barcoding based on 424 specimens of Korean Leptonetidae representing 76 morphospecies. A threshold of 4.2% based on maximum intraspecific genetic divergence was estimated to efficiently differentiate the morphospecies. The species assignments tested by five species delimitation methods (ABGD, ASAP, GMYC, PTP, and bPTP) were consistent with the morphological identifications for only 47 morphospecies (61.8%), indicating many cases of cryptic diversity among the remaining morphospecies. Furthermore, sympatry in leptonetids, which are known to be rare, was revealed to be common in South Korea, especially in epigean species. Our results showed that sympatries within families, congeners, and intraclades potentially occur throughout the entire region of Korea.
