Project description:Due to the effect COVID-19 epidemic, promoting green consumption is now a key marketing strategy in the hospitality and tourism industry. As it is vital green hotels predict their customers' visit intention, this study attempts to discover the factors affecting Taiwan's Z-generation tourists' green hotel visit intention using an extended theory of planned behavior [including personal moral norms (PMN) and environmental concern (EC)]. Data were gathered from 296 Z-generation tourists via an online survey, which was subsequently analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results evidence that Z-generation tourists' attitude, subjective norms, (SN) and perceived behavioral control positively and significantly influence their green hotel visit intention, with attitude being the most significant factor. Moreover, the mediation model analysis indicates Z-generation tourists' attitude toward green hotels mediates the relationships between PMN, SN, EC, and visit intention. This study provides new insights into tourists' green hotel visit intention and emphasizes the importance of attitude in the formation of intention.

Project description:There are many factors that affect vitamin D supplementation, including those from the theory of planned behaviour (TPB); however, how the perceived benefit acts in the model remains unknown. In the current study, we tested the efficacy of the TPB and the impacts of the perceived benefit (PBE) in the model. The subjects were 287 customers who purchased vitD from pharmacies in major cities in Taiwan. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression analyses, and path analysis via SPSS and AMOS were used to analyse the data. The original TPB model explained 47.5% of the variance of intention with the three variables of attitude (β = 0.261), perceived behavioural control (β = 0.183), and subjective norms (β = 0.169). The model that incorporated PBE increased the explained variance to 59.7%, and PBE became the strongest predictor (β = 0.310) and a significant mediator linking attitude, subjective norms, perceived control (ANC) with supplementation intention. PBE and attitude were the two most important variables in predicting vitD supplementation intention. We suggest that updated information regarding dietary sources of vitD and its benefits should be included in health- or nutrition-related courses in education programs for the overall health of the nation.

Project description:This study attempts to predict plant-based yogurt consumers' intention to consume plant-based yogurt alternatives in Denmark employing Ajzen's theory of planned behaviour as a theoretical framework. An online survey was conducted among 265 consumers recruited through convenience (snowball) sampling. The results from structural equation modelling analysis show that attitude (β = 0.216, p < 0.001), perceived behavioural control (self-efficacy) (β = 0.229, p < 0.001) and perceived sensory attributes (β = 0.324, p < 0.001) positively and significantly influenced consumers' intention to consume plant-based yogurt alternatives. However, subjective norms (β = 0.106, p = 0.087) and perceived barriers (β = -0.051, p = 0.414) did not influence consumers' intention to consume plant-based yogurt alternatives. Further, objective knowledge showed no significant influence on attitudes (β = 0.077, p = 0.242) and intention (β = -0.029, p = 0.603) towards plant-based yogurt alternatives. The intention (β = 0.677, p < 0.001) to consume plant-based yogurt alternatives showed a strong positive correlation with the behaviour to consume plant-based yogurt alternatives. The results from logistic regression indicated that socio-demographic characteristics, gender, education, income and region of residence were significantly associated with consumption of plant-based yogurt alternatives. Thus, focusing on consumers' attitudes and self-efficacy and improving the organoleptic characteristics might promote the consumption of plant-based yogurt alternatives in Denmark and similar countries.

Project description:Individual energy-saving behaviours are crucial for reducing energy consumption, and research on the determinants of these behaviours has been increasing over the last decade. The aim of this study is to explore the determinants of two specific behaviours: 'switching off non-essential lights' and 'completely switching off electronic devices'. An extended model of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) has been used as the theoretical research framework. The extension was implemented by considering two components (affective and cognitive) of the attitude towards these behaviours and then adding habit as a new variable. A two-waves study was conducted in which a convenience sample of Italian workers completed a questionnaire measuring the TPB constructs in relation to the two energy-saving behaviours (Time 1). The participants then completed another questionnaire a month later to assess self-reports of these behaviours (Time 2). The inclusion of habit improved the predictive power of the TPB, and the extended model was found to explain 65.5% and 76.1% of the variance in intentions and 16.2% and 22.9% of the variance in behaviours. Cognitive attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and habit were significantly related to intentions, and perceived behavioural control was the strongest predictor. Habit moderated some relationships between the TPB constructs and intentions. Behaviours were associated directly only with intentions. The results of this study support the efficacy of the TPB model in predicting target behaviours; they also suggest some strategies that can be followed to promote these energy-saving behaviours.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Providing sickness certification is a decision that primary care physicians make on a daily basis. The majority of sickness certification studies in the literature involve a general assessment of physician or patient behaviour without the use of a robust psychological framework to guide research accuracy. To address this deficiency, this study utilized the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to specifically gauge the intention and other salient predictors related to sickness certification prescribing behaviour amongst primary care physicians. METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted among N = 271 primary care physicians from 86 primary care practices throughout two states in Malaysia. Questionnaires used were specifically developed based on the TPB, consisting of both direct and indirect measures related to the provision of sickness leave. Questionnaire validity was established through factor analysis and the determination of internal consistency between theoretically related constructs. The temporal stability of the indirect measures was determined via the test-retest correlation analysis. Structural equation modelling was conducted to determine the strength of predictors related to intentions. RESULTS:The mean scores for intention to provide patients with sickness was low. The Cronbach α value for the direct measures was good: overall physician intent to provide sick leave (0.77), physician attitude towards prescribing sick leave for patients (0.77) and physician attitude in trusting the intention of patients seeking sick leave (0.83). The temporal stability of the indirect measures of the questionnaire was satisfactory with significant correlation between constructs separated by an interval of two weeks (p < 0.05). Attitudes and subjective norms were identified as important predictors in physician intention to provide sick leave to patients. CONCLUSION:An integrated behavioural model utilizing the TPB could help fully explain the complex act of providing sickness leave to patients. Findings from this study could assist relevant agencies to facilitate the creation of policies that may help regulate the provision of sickness leave and alleviate the work burden of sickness leave tasks faced by physicians in Malaysia.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Direct observation of clinical task performance plays a pivotal role in competency-based medical education. Although formal guidelines require supervisors to engage in direct observations, research demonstrates that trainees are infrequently observed. Supervisors may not only experience practical and socio-cultural barriers to direct observations in healthcare settings, they may also question usefulness or have low perceived self-efficacy in performing direct observations. A better understanding of how these multiple factors interact to influence supervisors' intention to perform direct observations may help us to more effectively implement the aforementioned guidelines and increase the frequency of direct observations. METHODS:We conducted an exploratory quantitative study, using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as our theoretical framework. In applying the TPB, we transfer a psychological theory to medical education to get insight in the influence of cognitive and emotional processes on intentions to use direct observations in workplace based learning and assessment. We developed an instrument to investigate supervisors intention to perform direct observations. The relationships between the TPB measures of our questionnaire were explored by computing bivariate correlations using Pearson's R tests. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed in order to assess the impact of the respective TPB measures as predictors on the intention to perform direct observations. RESULTS:In our study 82 GP supervisors completed our TPB questionnaire. We found that supervisors had a positive attitude towards direct observations. Our TPB model explained 45% of the variance in supervisors' intentions to perform them. Normative beliefs and past behaviour were significant determinants of this intention. CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that supervisors use their past experiences to form intentions to perform direct observations in a careful, thoughtful manner and, in doing so, also take the preferences of the learner and other stakeholders potentially engaged in direct observations into consideration. These findings have potential implications for research into work-based assessments and the development of training interventions to foster a shared mental model on the use of direct observations.

Project description:Introduction To promote patients’ referral across healthcare institutions and integrated care delivery, we identified predictors of physicians’ behaviour and intention to refer patients in a county medical consortium in China on the basis of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Methods This census-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Yangxi Hospital Group (YHG). All physicians in county hospitals and township health centres were invited to participate. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the relationships between referral intention and behaviour and other TPB variables in the group of whole participants and in sub-groups. Results In total, 330 physicians participated in this study. One-third of participants were general practitioners, and half of them were from county hospitals. Referral behaviour of females (χ2 = 20.372, p < 0.001), who had lower education levels (χ2 = 17.859, p = 0.001), lower professional title (χ2 = 14.963, p = 0.005), and lower monthly salary (χ2 = 33.753, p < 0.001) were less frequent than the others. Among them, 116 (35.2%), 108 (32.7%), and 106 (32.1%) respondents reported that they had never referred patients, had referred patients 1–9 times, and had referred patients over 10 times during the past 3 months, respectively. The mean score of referral intention was 4.23/5 (SD = 0.71). In the model with all participants, a stronger referral intention (β = 0.218, 95% CI = 0.080–0.356) was associated with more frequent referral behaviour. The subjective norm (β = 0.703, 95% CI = 0.590–0.817) was the strongest predictor of physicians’ referral intention, followed by perceived behavioural control (β = 0.234, 95% CI = 0.090–0.378). Mediated by referral intention, subjective norms (β = 0.153, p < 0.01) and perceived behavioural control (β = 0.190, p < 0.01) had significant indirect effects on physicians’ referral behaviour. The model with participants in county hospitals showed similar results to the model with all participants. Meanwhile, in the model with participants in township health centres, there were no significant associations between referral behaviour and other TPB constructs. Conclusion Physicians’ referral behaviour was influenced by intention, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control in Chinese county hospitals.

Project description:ObjectivesCervical cancer is 99.8% preventable when detected early; however, uptake of screening in the United Kingdom is at a 20-year low. Recently, a number of social media influencers have video logged about their experiences of cervical screening through narrative communication with their audience. Here we aimed to explore if accessing cervical screening information from a social media influencer can impact the theory of planned behaviour variables and predict intention to attend cervical screening appointments.DesignUtilising a cross-sectional design a volunteer sample of 102 UK women (mean age = 28; SD = 3.10; range = 25-35) took part in an online questionnaire study.ResultsHierarchical regression modelling revealed attitude as a significant predictor of intention to attend a cervical screening appointment and that social media influencers affect attitudes of their audience, indirectly influencing intention to attend.ConclusionHealth messages communicated by social media influencers are effective in promoting positive attitudes but not directly influence intention to attend towards cervical screening. Further research should explore influencer impact on attitudes towards this health behaviour with the ultimate aim of increasing attendance and consequently saving lives.

Project description:BackgroundThe present study aimed to develop and test an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB), which includes attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, oral health knowledge, and past oral health behavior on the intention to improve oral health behaviors among primary school students in Shanghai, China.MethodsA school-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 414 students in the third-grade from 10 classes of Mingqiang Primary School located in Shanghai, China. Participants were recruited in October 2019. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires, consisting of demographic characteristics, TPB variables, oral health knowledge and past oral health behaviors. Exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze TPB items. Pearson's correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the associated factors of intention to improve oral health behaviors.ResultsThe study showed that among students in the third grade, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and past oral health behaviors were associated with the intention to improve oral health behaviors. In the hierarchical regression analysis, age and sex were entered in Model 1 which significantly explained 3.00% of the variance (F = 6.26, p < 0.01). The addition of Model 2 variables of attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and oral health knowledge revealed that TPB variables explained 26.70% (F = 29.59, p < 0.01). For Model 3, the addition of past oral health behaviors accounted for a further 1% of variance, and the full model has accounted for 28.30% of the variance with the intention to improve oral health behaviors (F = 22.8, p < 0.01). Regression analyses supported that among the significant variables, perceived behavioral control had the largest beta weight, followed by subjective norms and past oral health behaviors.ConclusionThe extended TPB model constructed in this study could be used to explain children's intentions to improve oral health behaviors. Children's oral health-related perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and past oral health behaviors may serve as priority intervention targets in oral health promotion practices aimed at children.

Project description:Aims and objectivesTo assess nursing and allied health students' demographics, knowledge and intentions to care for patients with an infectious disease, COVID-19.BackgroundCOVID-19 has caused a public health crisis and worldwide panic. Little is known about students' knowledge levels and intentions to care for infected patients during pandemics.DesignA quantitative, cross-sectional study.MethodA cross-sectional study with a convenience sample (N = 480) of nursing and allied health students was analysed using the Mann-Whitney and Spearman's correlation tests.ResultsAt least 60% of the participants attained high scores for 16 of the 22 items on the knowledge scale. Knowledge was positively associated with attitude (rs = .19, p < .01) and perceived behavioural control (rs = .38, p < .01) and negatively associated with subjective norms (rs = -.11, p < .05). Senior students had higher scores (p = .024) in knowledge. Intention was negatively correlated with knowledge (rs = -.24, p < .01) and perceived behavioural control (rs = -.16, p < .01). Male students (p = .031) and younger students had higher scores in intention (p = .040). Males had higher scores in subjective norms (p < .001), and older and senior students had higher scores in perceived behavioural control (p < .001).ConclusionsDespite the current knowledge on COVID-19 available through multimedia-communication channels, students had negative perceived behavioural controls and intentions to care for COVID-19 patients. Formal education and training are required to enhance students' intentions to care for patients with infectious diseases. Additionally, demographics and belief variables influence students' intentions to care, and further in-depth analysis is required. Relevance to Clinical Practice This study suggests the importance of updating and contextualizing nursing and allied health curricula to meet global infectious disease guidelines and, ultimately, to support the healthcare system with efficient practitioners in future pandemics.
