The aim is to validate Turkish version Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS).Methods
One hundred forty patients (>65 years) were included. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition -V was used in all patients. Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale was applied for 2 days. Results were compared with Mini-Mental State Examination; reliability, validity, and statistical values were determined.Results
Time validity was verified. Mini-mental state examination was correlated 45.3% in control and 73% in dementia group. Factor weights varied between 0.44 and 0.81; factor construct was verified as 6-item scoring. When 25 was cutoff point, sensitivity was 92.86% and specificity was 92.86%. Content validity index was found to be 100% by 7 specialists. Cronbach α (0.692) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation = 0.987) were determined.Conclusion
Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (Turkish) is validated and verified as reliable. Test could be applied for 5 minutes approximately; results are not affected by educational status, immigrant status, and language used; however, age and gender have significant effect on results.

Project description:Medical professionalism is a basic competency in medical education. This study aimed to adapt the Professionalism Assessment Scale, which is used to evaluate the professionalism attitudes of medical students, into Turkish and to assess its validity and reliability. First, the scale’s translation-back-translation was performed and piloted on 30 students. Then, the final scale was applied to medical students to ensure the scale’s validity. The Penn State University College of Medicine Professionalism Questionnaire was used for external validation to assess criterion validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed for structure validity. Test-retest, item correlations, split-half analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were evaluated to determine the scale’s reliability. SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 24.0 package programs were used for statistical analysis. The statistical significance level was accepted as P<0.05. The mean age of the participants was 21±2 years, and 50.5% (n = 166) were female. Three hundred thirty-five students were invited, and 329 participated in the study. The response rate was 98%. The mean total Professionalism Assessment Scale score was 96.36±12.04. The three-factor structure of the scale, “empathy and humanism,” “professional relationship and development,” and “responsibility,” was confirmed. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.94, and both the Spearman-Brown and Guttman split-half coefficients were 0.89. The three-factor structure of the scale, consisting of 22 items, explained 59.1% of the total variance. The intraclass correlation coefficient between test-retest measurements was 0.81. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a model suitable for the original version of the scale (χ2/sd = 2.814, RMSEA = 0.074). The Turkish version of the Professionalism Assessment Scale is a valid and reliable tool to determine the professionalism attitudes of medical students in Turkey.

Project description:ImportanceAdults with sickle cell disease (SCD) disproportionally experience early cognitive decline; however, guidance on the optimal screening strategy for cognitive dysfunction is lacking, and several available tools are biased by language, educational level, socioeconomic status, and race/ethnicity. The Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) was specifically designed for cognitive screening in multicultural populations.ObjectiveTo ascertain the prevalence of suspected dementia in adults with SCD using the RUDAS, and to identify whether age, sex, educational level, several biological variables, and SCD complications were associated with RUDAS scores.Design, setting, and participantsThis multicenter, bilingual, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 SCD comprehensive care centers in Canada (Centre Hospitalier de l'Université Montréal in Montréal and University Health Network in Toronto). Participants were adults aged 18 years or older and were enrolled in the study between July 1, 2018, and July 30, 2019. All outpatients were eligible and offered study participation, unless they had an acute medical condition that required inpatient care or they were unable to follow study instructions.InterventionsThe RUDAS was administered by trained personnel in either French or English, according to the patient's language preference. A questionnaire on social determinants of health was also administered, and participants underwent screening for anxiety and depression.Main outcomes and measuresProportion of participants with RUDAS scores that were suggestive of dementia and the RUDAS score. Any score lower than 23 points was suggestive of dementia, a score between 23 and 27 points indicated a possible association with mild neurocognitive disorder, and a score higher than 27 points was normal.ResultsA total of 252 adult patients with SCD were included (136 women [54.0%]; mean [range] age, 34.8 [18-75] years). Overall, 29 patients (11.5%) had RUDAS scores that were suggestive of dementia, and this proportion increased with age (15 [8.7%] in the 18-39 years age group, 10 [14.5%] in the 40-59 years age group, and 4 [36.4%] in the ≥60 years age group). The RUDAS scores were not associated with sex, language, SCD genotype, and SCD complications. The highest level of education was significantly associated with the RUDAS score; however, the association was small (η2 = 0.02; 95% CI, 0.00-0.07; P = .02). In a multivariable analysis, lower glomerular filtration rate (r = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.29-0.50; P < .001) and increasing age (r = -0.37; 95% CI, -0.47 to -0.26; P < .001), but not SCD genotype or disease severity, were associated with lower RUDAS scores.Conclusions and relevanceThis study found that using the RUDAS revealed a high prevalence of suspected dementia in adult patients with SCD that was associated with worsening kidney function and age. Cognition should be screened in all adult patients with SCD, regardless of age, disease severity, and SCD genotype; further validation of the RUDAS is ongoing.

Project description:IntroductionMild cognitive impairment (MCI) is defined as the symptomatic pre-dementia phase on the continuum of cognitive decline. Early recognition and application of potential interventions could prevent or delay the progression to dementia. The Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) shows good performance in the screening of dementia but has limited data regarding its diagnostic properties in the screening of MCI. The objectives of this study were to assess the psychometric properties of the Thai version of the RUDAS (RUDAS-Thai) in the screening of MCI, identify associated factors for the RUDAS performance, and determine the optimal cutoff point in detecting MCI.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted from January 2020 to March 2021. Older patients at the outpatient clinic of an internal medicine department at a tertiary care hospital in Thailand were examined. Baseline data were collected, and the RUDAS-Thai was administered to each patient. Afterward, a geriatrician assessed each patient for MCI.ResultsA total of 150 patients were included, of whom 42 cases (28%) had MCI. The overall performance of the test using an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.82 (95% confidence interval 0.75-0.89). At the optimal cutoff point of 25/30, the AUC was 0.76 with sensitivity and specificity of 76.2 and 75%, respectively. The educational level affected the test performance according to regression analysis. For patients with years of education ≤6 and >6, the optimal cutoff points were 25/30 and 26/30, respectively.ConclusionThe RUDAS-Thai performed well in differentiating patients with MCI from normal cognition; however, it was affected by educational level. A score of 25/30 or lower for persons with ≤6 years of education or 26/30 or lower for persons with higher than 6 years of education is the optimal cutoff point for indication of developing MCI.

Project description:BackgroundMild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a transitional state between normal cognition and dementia during ageing process. Early screening of elderly for MCI can help for early prevention and treatment of dementia. Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) is a brief cognitive assessment tool with excellent psychometric properties and is particularly useful in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations. The purpose of this study was to translate RUDAS into Nepali and to evaluate internal consistency of Nepali version of RUDAS.MethodsRUDAS was translated to Nepali following recommended guidelines for translation and cross-cultural adaptation of patient reported measures. The pre-final Nepali version of RUDAS was tested on 30 elderly and appropriate changes were made by expert committee. The final Nepali version of RUDAS was developed and was administered on 100 elderly populations (mean age 67.70) to assess internal consistency.ResultsThe rating of the participants upon their understanding of each 6 items of Nepali version of RUDAS on a 10-point Likert scale received a good score of more than 8 except 'cube drawing' which only received a mean score of 5.5. Additionally, only 8(27%) elderly have responded to the item 'cube drawing'. The preference test was done and cube drawing was replaced by stick design test. Nepali version of RUDAS showed acceptable internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha 0.7.ConclusionThe results of our study presents translated and cross-culturally adapted Nepali version of RUDAS that has been proved to be an appropriate assessment tool for screening cognitive impairment among elderly.

Project description:ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to validate the Turkish version of the Children's Power of Food Scale (C-PFS-T) after translation of the original version.DesignThe data were collected via face-to-face interviews using the C-PFS-T and a socio-demographic information form. BMI was calculated by dividing body weight by the square of the height. After the adaptation of the scale to Turkish language, validity and reliability analysis were conducted for the C-PFS-T.SettingGülhane Training and Research Hospital Department of Child Health and Diseases Nutrition and Diet Unit in Ankara.ParticipantsThis research was conducted with volunteer children and adolescents between the ages of 9 and 16 years (n 268).ResultsIt was concluded that the 15-item C-PFS-T was collected under three factors as in the original version of the child version. Cronbach's α coefficient was found to be 0·878 for the scale. The confirmatory factor analysis results showed the acceptability and applicability of adapting the version of the C-PFS-T in terms of χ2/df (= 3·816), adjusted goodness-of-fit index (AGFI = 0·931), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA = 0·082) and goodness-of-fit index (GFI = 0·852) fit indices. C-PFS-T total score's median value of obese group wasn't substantially different from normal weight group.Conclusions:It was concluded that the Turkish version of the C-PFS, which provides an assessment of the hedonic hunger status of children and adolescents with fifteen items and threesubdimensions, has sufficient reliability and validity to be applied to these subjects.

Project description:PurposeThe aim of this methodological study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale adapted to the Turkish community.MethodsThe study sample was completed with 319 patients who had been diagnosed at least 1 year before and hospitalized in the Malatya Turgut Ozal Health Center and Malatya State Hospital in Turkey. A questionnaire that consists of items on sociodemographic characteristics, drug use and information about the disease of patients and the Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale were used for data collection in the study. In reliability analysis of the scale, the Cronbach's α coefficient was calculated and item analysis method was utilized. Factor analysis was used for the construct validity, and Principal Component Analysis and Varimax Rotation method were used for analyzing the factor structures.ResultsAccording to data obtained in the study, item-total correlation of the items of the scale was found to be at an adequate level (0.297-0.803). The scale's Cronbach's α reliability coefficient was found to be 0.86, and there was one factor that explains 52.38% of the total variance with an eigenvalue was greater than 1.0. As a result of the analysis, the factor loadings of the items of the scale were found to be between 0.59 and 0.81.ConclusionDiabetes Self-Efficacy Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for determining the self-efficacy of patients and providing a proper care. It can be suggested to investigate and evaluate the consistency of the scale by applying it to broader sample groups representing different socioeconomic levels.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to develop a self-assessment scale for care management of people with dementia and examine its reliability and validity.MethodsBased on Bloom's Taxonomy, previous research, and experts' opinions on dementia and care management, a scale consisting of 18 items was developed to assess care managers' attitudes, knowledge, and skills in their management of people with dementia. To examine the scale's reliability and validity, data were collected from 638 care managers. Construct validity using exploratory factor analysis, known-group validity, and internal consistency reliability of the scale were evaluated.ResultsExploratory factor analysis supported the construct validity with a four-factor model and explained 59.1% of the total variance. Following were the four factors: Factor I 'Person centred care'; Factor II 'Understanding of disease characteristics, treatment and care'; Factor III 'Understanding of people with dementia and care management according to their characteristics'; and Factor IV 'Utilization of local resources surrounding people with dementia'. Regarding the known-group validity, results showed that the group with a qualified chief care manager scored significantly higher than the group without one on Factors I (P = 0.013) and III (P = 0.026). Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 18 items was 0.928.ConclusionsThe findings prove that the scale has acceptable reliability and validity, and can help care managers reflect on their practice. Future research is desirable to measure the validation of change in the scale.

Project description:Background/aimFrailty is an important, multidimensional geriatric syndrome defined as increased vulnerability to stressors. Fried frailty phenotype (FFP) is one of the most widely used models to define physical frailty. The aim of this study is to investigate the cross-cultural validity and reliability of Fried frailty phenotype (FFP) in older Turkish population.Materials and methodsA total of 450 patients, aged 59 years and over, were included. FFP translated into Turkish was used. Hand grip strength cut-off values that best predict low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) for Turkish men and women were calculated. A modified version of FFP was created by rescoring FFP according to these cut-off values applicable to Turkish population. Correlation analysis between the frailty assessment by comprehensive geriatric evaluation of clinician experienced in geriatric medicine, and FFP and modified version of FFP were performed for validation. Thirty-five patients underwent frailty assessment with FFP twice for reliability assessment. Inter-rater and intra-rater agreements were investigated.ResultsClinician's decision of frailty status demonstrated significant agreement with the results of FFP, as well as modified FFP. Interrater and intra-rater compliance were good. Best hand grip strength cut-off values for predicting low SMI in older Turkish population were determined as ≤13.6 kg (AUC: 0.841, p < 0.001) for women and ≤27.7 kg for men (AUC: 0.779; p < 0.001). Modified FFP had a good agreement with the FFP.ConclusionFFP is a valid and reliable tool for Turkish population.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Mini-Osteoarthritis Knee and Hip Quality of Life (Mini-OAKHQoL) scale developed to assess the quality of life (QoL) in patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis.Patients and methodsBetween May 2018 and May 2020, a total of 83 patients (11 males, 72 females; mean age: 58.1±10.0 years; range, 39 to 81 years) with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis were included. Demographic, clinical, and survey data (Mini-OAKHQoL, Nottingham Health Profile, Short Form-36, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, Lequesne Index, and Visual Analog Scale of pain intensity) were recorded. Missing data, floor effect, and ceiling effect were calculated. For reliability analysis, internal consistency and test-retest reliability were discovered. Face, content, convergent, and divergent validities were applied.ResultsAmong the patients, 52 (62.65%) had knee osteoarthritis, 26 (31.32%) had hip osteoarthritis, and five (6.02%) had both. Mini-OAKHQoL had a good face and content validity. The average item completion rate was 96.9%, with the time needed to perform was about 4 min. None of the subscales of Mini-OAKHQoL presented floor or ceiling effect, with a good range of responses. The Cronbach alpha coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis of the subscales ranged from 0.927 to 0.676 and 0.987 to 0.843, respectively. Regarding convergent validity, the physical activities, mental health, and pain subscales of Mini-OAKHQoL had moderate to high correlations with the topic-related subset of the other QoL surveys. There were no or weak correlations between Mini-OAKHQoL and non-QoL parameters, indicating its divergent validity.ConclusionThe Turkish version of Mini-OAKHQoL is a valid, reliable, simple, practical, accurate, completable, comprehensive, and disease-specific self-report instrument to assess QoL in patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis.

Project description:Insomnia catastrophizing has attracted attention in recent years. Individuals may have started to recognize the importance of evaluating the consequences of insomnia, which has worsened during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the Insomnia Catastrophizing Scale (ICS) in the Turkish young adult population. The study group consisted of a total of 387 participants: 57 in the pilot study and 330 in the main study. The majority of the participants in the study were females. According to the results of the confirmatory factor analysis, the single-factor structures of the ICS nighttime and daytime forms were confirmed to be the same as in the original structure, and the fit indices were above the acceptable limits. The ICS forms had very high reliability. The findings of the present study showed that the Turkish daytime and nighttime forms of the ICS are valid and reliable instruments. The results provide a means of measuring insomnia catastrophizing for use in therapeutic and counseling settings for Turkish young adult population. We also propose that mental health practitioners should design interventions to reduce insomnia catastrophizing in Turkish culture.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s41105-021-00336-7.
