Project description:Structural reconstruction is a process commonly observed for Cu-based catalysts in electrochemical CO2 reduction. The Cu-based precatalysts with structural complexity often undergo sophisticated structural reconstruction processes, which may offer opportunities for enhancing the electrosynthesis of multicarbon products (C2+ products) but remain largely uncertain due to various new structural features possibly arising during the processes. In this work, the Cu2 O superparticles with an assembly structure are demonstrated to undergo complicated structure evolution under electrochemical reduction condition, enabling highly selective CO2 -to-C2+ products conversion in electrocatalysis. As revealed by electron microscopic characterization together with in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the building blocks inside the superparticle fuse to generate numerous grain boundaries while those in the outer shell detach to form nanogap structures that can efficiently confine OH- to induce high local pH. Such a combination of unique structural features with local reaction environment offers two important factors for facilitating C-C coupling. Consequently, the Cu2 O superparticle-derived catalyst achieves high faradaic efficiencies of 53.2% for C2 H4 and 74.2% for C2+ products, surpassing the performance of geometrically simpler Cu2 O cube-derived catalyst and most reported Cu electrocatalysts under comparable conditions. This work provides insights for rationally designing highly selective CO2 reduction electrocatalysts by controlling structural reconstruction.

Project description:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) is an attractive technology to reintegrate the anthropogenic CO2 back into the carbon cycle driven by a suitable catalyst. This study employs highly efficient multi-carbon (C2+) producing Cu2O nanocubes (NCs) decorated with CO-selective Au nanoparticles (NPs) to investigate the correlation between a high CO surface concentration microenvironment and the catalytic performance. Structure, morphology and near-surface composition are studied via operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, operando high-energy X-ray diffraction as well as quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These operando studies show the continuous evolution of the local structure and chemical environment of our catalysts during reaction conditions. Along with its alloy formation, a CO-rich microenvironment as well as weakened average CO binding on the catalyst surface during CO2RR is detected. Linking these findings to the catalytic function, a complex compositional interplay between Au and Cu is revealed in which higher Au loadings primarily facilitate CO formation. Nonetheless, the strongest improvement in C2+ formation appears for the lowest Au loadings, suggesting a beneficial role of the Au-Cu atomic interaction for the catalytic function in CO2RR. This study highlights the importance of site engineering and operando investigations to unveil the electrocatalyst's adaptations to the reaction conditions, which is a prerequisite to understand its catalytic behavior.

Project description:Copper-based tandem schemes have emerged as promising strategies to promote the formation of multi-carbon products in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction. In such approaches, the CO-generating component of the tandem catalyst increases the local concentration of CO and thereby enhances the intrinsic carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling on copper. However, the optimal characteristics of the CO-generating catalyst for maximizing the C2 production are currently unknown. In this work, we developed tunable tandem catalysts comprising iron porphyrin (Fe-Por), as the CO-generating component, and Cu nanocubes (Cucub) to understand how the turnover frequency for CO (TOFCO) of the molecular catalysts impacts the C-C coupling on the Cu surface. First, we tuned the TOFCO of the Fe-Por by varying the number of orbitals involved in the π-system. Then, we coupled these molecular catalysts with the Cucub and assessed the current densities and faradaic efficiencies. We discovered that all of the designed Fe-Por boost ethylene production. The most efficient Cucub/Fe-Por tandem catalyst was the one including the Fe-Por with the highest TOFCO and exhibited a nearly 22-fold increase in the ethylene selectivity and 100 mV positive shift of the onset potential with respect to the pristine Cucub. These results reveal that coupling the TOFCO tunability of molecular catalysts with copper nanocatalysts opens up new possibilities towards the development of Cu-based catalysts with enhanced selectivity for multi-carbon product generation at low overpotential.

Project description:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive materials to generate multifunctional catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons. Here we report the synthesis of Cu and Zn modified Al-fumarate (Al-fum) MOFs, in which Zn promotes the selective reduction of CO2 to CO and Cu promotes CO reduction to oxygenates and hydrocarbons in an electrocatalytic cascade. Cu and Zn nanoparticles (NPs) were introduced to the Al-fum MOF by a double solvent method to promote in-pore metal deposition, and the resulting reduced Cu-Zn@Al-fum drop-cast on a hydrophobic gas diffusion electrode for electrochemical study. Cu-Zn@Al-fum is active for CO2 electroreduction, with the Cu and Zn loading influencing the product yields. The highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 62% is achieved at -1.0 V vs. RHE for the conversion of CO2 into CO, HCOOH, CH4, C2H4 and C2H5OH, with a FE of 28% to CH4, C2H4 and C2H5OH at pH 6.8. Al-fum MOF is a chemically robust matrix to disperse Cu and Zn NPs, improving electrocatalyst lifetime during CO2 reduction by minimizing transition metal aggregation during electrode operation.

Project description:This work reports the synthesis of CuxSny alloy aerogels for electrochemical CO2 reduction catalysts. An in situ reduction and the subsequent freeze-drying process can successfully give CnxSny aerogels with tuneable Sn contents, and such aerogels are composed of three-dimensional architectures made from inter-connected fine nanoparticles with pores as the channels. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the introduction of Sn in Cu aerogels inhibits H2 evolution reaction (HER) activity, while the accelerated CO desorption on the catalyst surface is found at the same time. The porous structure of aerogel also favors exposing more active sites. Counting these together, with the optimized composition of Cu95Sn5 aerogel, the high selectivity of CO can be achieved with a faradaic efficiency of over 90% in a wide potential range (-0.7 V to -1.0 V vs. RHE).

Project description:The design of nanoparticles (NPs) with tailored morphologies and finely tuned electronic and physical properties has become a key strategy for controlling selectivity and improving conversion efficiency in a variety of important electrocatalytic transformations. Transition metal phosphide NPs, in particular, have emerged as a versatile class of catalytic materials due to their multifunctional active sites and composition- and phase-dependent properties. Access to targeted transition metal phosphide NPs with controlled features is necessary to tune the catalytic activity. To this end, we have established a solution-synthesis route utilizing a molecular precursor containing M-P bonds to generate solid metal phosphide NPs with controlled stoichiometry and morphology. We expand here the application of molecular precursors in metal phosphide NP synthesis to include the preparation of phase-pure Cu3P NPs from the thermal decomposition of [Cu(H)(PPh3)]6. The mechanism of [Cu(H)(PPh3)]6 decomposition and subsequent formation of Cu3P was investigated through modification of the reaction parameters. Identification and optimization of the critical reaction parameters (i.e., time, temperature, and oleylamine concentration) enabled the synthesis of phase-pure 9-11 nm Cu3P NPs. To probe the multifunctionality of this materials system, Cu3P NPs were investigated as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction. At low overpotential (-0.30 V versus RHE) in 0.1 M KHCO3 electrolyte, Cu3P-modified carbon paper electrodes produced formate (HCOO-) at a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 8%.

Project description:Ethylene is an ideal CO2 product in an electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) with high economic value. This paper synthesised Al-doped octahedral Cu2O (Al-Cu2O) nanocrystal by a simple wet chemical method. The selectivity of CO2RR products was improved by doping Al onto the surface of octahedral Cu2O. The Al-Cu2O was used as an efficient electrocatalyst for CO2RR with selective ethylene production. The Al-Cu2O exhibited a high % Faradic efficiency (FEC2H4) of 44.9% at -1.23 V (vs. RHE) in CO2 saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 electrolyte. Charge transfer from the Al atom to the Cu atom occurs after Al doping in Cu2O, optimizing the electronic structure and facilitating CO2RR to ethylene production. The DFT calculation showed that the Al-Cu2O catalyst could effectively reduce the adsorption energy of the *CHCOH intermediate and promote the mass transfer of charges, thus improving the FEC2H4. After Al doping into Cu2O, the center of d orbitals shift positively, which makes the d-band closer to the Fermi level. Furthermore, the density of electronic states increases due to the interaction between Cu atoms and intermediates, thus accelerating the electrochemical CO2 reduction process. This work proved that the metal doping strategy can effectively improve the catalytic properties of Cu2O, thus providing a useful way for CO2 cycling and green production of C2H4.

Project description:Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion to value-added, highly reduced chemicals such as methanol (CH3OH) is a promising possibility for producing renewable fuel and simultaneous CO2 recycling. However, this process remains a challenge, with only a few selective electrocatalysts known. Here, we present a study of a palladium monolayer on a platinum (111) single crystal (PdML/Pt(111)) as an electrocatalyst for CO2 conversion to CH3OH. A custom-made setup was employed in order to detect and quantify gaseous and liquid CO2 reduction products in sufficient concentrations despite the limitations of working with a single-crystalline electrode. Under ambient reaction conditions, a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 1.5% at -0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) was obtained while using CO2 as the reactant. Other reaction intermediates, carbon monoxide (CO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) were subsequently used as reactants, leading to FEs of 1.8 and 2.5%, respectively, whereas formic acid is not reduced. The corresponding mechanism concluded from our work is compared to the literature. The electrocatalyst introduced here, with a highly well-defined structure for CO2 conversion to CH3OH, opens up possibilities for further catalytic explorations.

Project description:For steady electroconversion to value-added chemical products with high efficiency, electrocatalyst reconstruction during electrochemical reactions is a critical issue in catalyst design strategies. Here, we report a reconstruction-immunized catalyst system in which Cu nanoparticles are protected by a quasi-graphitic C shell. This C shell epitaxially grew on Cu with quasi-graphitic bonding via a gas-solid reaction governed by the CO (g) - CO2 (g) - C (s) equilibrium. The quasi-graphitic C shell-coated Cu was stable during the CO2 reduction reaction and provided a platform for rational material design. C2+ product selectivity could be additionally improved by doping p-block elements. These elements modulated the electronic structure of the Cu surface and its binding properties, which can affect the intermediate binding and CO dimerization barrier. B-modified Cu attained a 68.1% Faradaic efficiency for C2H4 at -0.55 V (vs RHE) and a C2H4 cathodic power conversion efficiency of 44.0%. In the case of N-modified Cu, an improved C2+ selectivity of 82.3% at a partial current density of 329.2 mA/cm2 was acquired. Quasi-graphitic C shells, which enable surface stabilization and inner element doping, can realize stable CO2-to-C2H4 conversion over 180 h and allow practical application of electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion.

Project description:In this work, we have disclosed the facile syntheses of morphologically diverse Cu2O nanoparticles using our laboratory designed modified hydrothermal reactor employing low-cost copper (II) acetate precursor compounds. The reaction conditions dovetail the effect of ethylene glycol (EG) and glucose to exclusively evolve the morphology tuned Cu2O nanomaterial at different pHs. The morphology tuning produces octahedron (Oh), dwarf hexapod (DHP), and elongated hexapod (EHP) Cu2O structures only with the optimized reagent concentrations. Interestingly, all of them were bestowed with a (111) facet, a superlative facet for facile nitroarene reduction. Thus, the morphology reliant catalytic reaction becomes evident. However, when used individually, EG and glucose evolve ill-defined CuO/Cu2O and Cu2O structures, respectively. We have observed that a change in pH of the medium at the onset of the reaction is obligatory for the evolution of tailor-made morphologically diverse Cu2O nanoparticles. However, preformed Cu2O particles do not suffer further structure/morphology changes under deliberate pH (6.0-9.0) change. With the as-obtained Oh, DHP, and EHP Cu2O structures, we further delve into the realm of catalysis to understand the splendor of the nanocatalyst, morphology and surface area dependence, facet selective reactivity, and other factors affecting the catalytic efficiency. The remarkable rate of catalysis of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), evident from the catalyst activity parameter (k a = 123.6 g-1 s-1), to produce 4-aminophenol in the presence of a reducing agent like sodium borohydride (NaBH4) of the as-prepared catalysts is evidence of the collaborative effects of the effective surface area, surface positive charge, and active (111) facet of the Cu2O nanocatalyst. We have also studied the effect of other common anions, namely, Cl-, NO2 -, NO3 -, CO3 2-, and SO4 2- on the reduction process. To obtain a general consensus about facets, we compared (100) and (111) faceted Cu2O nanocatalysts not only for 4-NP reduction but also for the reduction of toxic chromium Cr(VI) in the presence of formic acid to further emphasize the importance of facet selectivity in catalysis and the versatility of the morphology tuned as-prepared Cu2O.
