On the (relation between) efficiency and secret key rate of QKD.

ABSTRACT: The processes of evaluation and comparison play a vital role in the development of a scientific field. In the field of quantum cryptography (especially quantum key distribution, QKD), the so-called secret key rate is used for characterizing the performance of a protocol (scheme). However the current definition of this quantity is incomplete. It does not consider the classical communication process taking place in a QKD protocol. There exists a quantity that involves all the procedures (resources) in a communication process: it is the efficiency (total efficiency). This paper reports a definition of this parameter. Also the relation between the total efficiency and key rate is found. By means of this relation, the total secret key rate of a QKD protocol is expressed. An application of the total key rate is demonstrated: the original twin-field QKD (TF-QKD) is evaluated in terms of this rate. The paper also shows a comparison between the total key rate and the standard key rate of a TF-QKD.

Project description:We provide a rigorous security proof of continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution which incorporates finite-size effects and composable terms. In order to use realistic and optimized parameters and be able to derive results close to experimental expectations, we run protocol simulations supported by a Python library, including all the protocol operations, from simulating the quantum communication till the extraction of the final key.

Multicomponent reactions provide key molecules for secret communication.

Project description:A convenient and inherently more secure communication channel for encoding messages via specifically designed molecular keys is introduced by combining advanced encryption standard cryptography with molecular steganography. The necessary molecular keys require large structural diversity, thus suggesting the application of multicomponent reactions. Herein, the Ugi four-component reaction of perfluorinated acids is utilized to establish an exemplary database consisting of 130 commercially available components. Considering all permutations, this combinatorial approach can unambiguously provide 500,000 molecular keys in only one synthetic procedure per key. The molecular keys are transferred nondigitally and concealed by either adsorption onto paper, coffee, tea or sugar as well as by dissolution in a perfume or in blood. Re-isolation and purification from these disguises is simplified by the perfluorinated sidechains of the molecular keys. High resolution tandem mass spectrometry can unequivocally determine the molecular structure and thus the identity of the key for a subsequent decryption of an encoded message.

Physical Layer Secret-Key Generation Scheme for Transportation Security Sensor Network.

Project description:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used in different disciplines, including transportation systems, agriculture field environment monitoring, healthcare systems, and industrial monitoring. The security challenge of the wireless communication link between sensor nodes is critical in WSNs. In this paper, we propose a new physical layer secret-key generation scheme for transportation security sensor network. The scheme is based on the cooperation of all the sensor nodes, thus avoiding the key distribution process, which increases the security of the system. Different passive and active attack models are analyzed in this paper. We also prove that when the cooperative node number is large enough, even when the eavesdropper is equipped with multiple antennas, the secret-key is still secure. Numerical results are performed to show the efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Relation between Heart Rate Variability and Disease Course in Multiple Sclerosis.

Project description:Little is known about the interplay between the autonomic nervous system and disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS). We examined the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV), a reliable measure of vagal nerve function, and disease characteristics in a prospective MS cohort. Standard deviation of each normal-to-normal inter-beat interval (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), global indices of HRV, were measured in 114 MS patients, which included four predefined subgroups, and 30 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). We assessed group differences at baseline, HRV reproducibility at month 3, and used logistic regression modeling to relate baseline HRV with relapse occurrence. No significant HRV differences were found between MS and HC and between MS subgroups. In MS patients, both HRV indices correlated with age (r = -0.278, p = 0.018 and r = -0.319, p < 0.001, respectively) and with month 3 assessments (r = 0.695 and r = 0.760, p < 0.001). Higher SDNN and RMSSD at baseline were associated with self-reported relapses at month 3 (OR = 1.053, 95% CI (1.013-1.095), p = 0.009 and OR = 1.065, 95% CI (1.016-1.117), p = 0.009), and SDNN at baseline with relapses at month 12 (OR = 1.034, 95% CI (1.009-1.059), p = 0.008; ROC, AUC = 0.733, p = 0.002). There were no baseline HRV differences between MS and HC or between subgroups. Post-hoc analysis showed an association with an increased relapse risk.

Data on the relation between renal biomarkers and measured glomerular filtration rate.

Project description:The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "The Diagnostic Value of Rescaled Renal Biomarkers Serum Creatinine and Serum Cystatin C and their Relation with Measured Glomerular Filtration Rate" (Pottel et al. (2017) [1]). Data are presented demonstrating the rationale for the normalization or rescaling of serum cystatin C, equivalent to the rescaling of serum creatinine. Rescaling biomarkers brings them to a notionally common scale with reference interval [0.67-1.33]. This article illustrates the correlation between rescaled biomarkers serum creatinine and serum cystatin C by plotting them in a 2-dimensional graph. The diagnostic value in terms of sensitivity and specificity with measured Glomerular Filtration Rate as the reference method is calculated per age-decade for both rescaled biomarkers. Finally, the interchangeability between detecting impaired kidney function from renal biomarkers and from the Full Age Spectrum FAS-estimating GFR-equation and measured GFR using a fixed and an age-dependent threshold is shown.

Unbreakable distributed storage with quantum key distribution network and password-authenticated secret sharing.

Project description:Distributed storage plays an essential role in realizing robust and secure data storage in a network over long periods of time. A distributed storage system consists of a data owner machine, multiple storage servers and channels to link them. In such a system, secret sharing scheme is widely adopted, in which secret data are split into multiple pieces and stored in each server. To reconstruct them, the data owner should gather plural pieces. Shamir's (k, n)-threshold scheme, in which the data are split into n pieces (shares) for storage and at least k pieces of them must be gathered for reconstruction, furnishes information theoretic security, that is, even if attackers could collect shares of less than the threshold k, they cannot get any information about the data, even with unlimited computing power. Behind this scenario, however, assumed is that data transmission and authentication must be perfectly secure, which is not trivial in practice. Here we propose a totally information theoretically secure distributed storage system based on a user-friendly single-password-authenticated secret sharing scheme and secure transmission using quantum key distribution, and demonstrate it in the Tokyo metropolitan area (≤90 km).

Metabolic efficiency reshapes the seminal relationship between pathogen growth rate and virulence.

Project description:A cornerstone of classical virulence evolution theories is the assumption that pathogen growth rate is positively correlated with virulence, the amount of damage pathogens inflict on their hosts. Such theories are key for incorporating evolutionary principles into sustainable disease management strategies. Yet, empirical evidence raises doubts over this central assumption underpinning classical theories, thus undermining their generality and predictive power. In this paper, we identify a key component missing from current theories which redefines the growth-virulence relationship in a way that is consistent with data. By modifying the activity of a single metabolic gene, we engineered strains of Magnaporthe oryzae with different nutrient acquisition and growth rates. We conducted in planta infection studies and uncovered an unexpected non-monotonic relationship between growth rate and virulence that is jointly shaped by how growth rate and metabolic efficiency interact. This novel mechanistic framework paves the way for a much-needed new suite of virulence evolution theories.

Cognition mediates the relation between structural network efficiency and gait in small vessel disease.

Project description:Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), including white matter hyperintensities (WMH), microbleeds, lacunes, was related to gait disturbances, while the underlying mechanism is unclear. Here, we investigated the relation between structural network efficiency, cognition and gait performance in 272 elderly subjects with SVD. All participants underwent 1.5 T MRI, gait and neuropsychological assessment. Conventional MRI markers for SVD, i.e. WMH volume, number of lacunes and microbleeds, were assessed. Diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography was used to reconstruct the brain network for each individual, followed by graph-theoretical analyses to compute the well-established network measure, global efficiency. We found that lower global efficiency was associated with worse gait performance, including slower gait speed and shorter stride length, independent of conventional MRI markers for SVD. This association was partly mediated via cognitive function. We identified subnetworks of white matter connections associated with gait and cognition, characterized by dominant involvement of frontal tracts. Our findings suggest that network disruption is associated with gait disturbances through cognitive dysfunction in elderly with SVD. Gait is a highly cognitive process and the crucial role of cognition should be considered when investigating gait disturbances in the elderly with SVD.

Longitudinal Relation Between Structural Network Efficiency, Cognition, and Gait in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease.

Project description:BackgroundTo investigate changes in gait performance over time and how these changes are associated with the decline in structural network efficiency and cognition in older patients with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD).MethodsIn a prospective, single-center cohort with 217 older participants with SVD, we performed 1.5T MRI scans, cognitive tests, and gait assessments evaluated by Timed UP and Go (TUG) test twice over 4 years. We reconstructed the white matter network for each subject based on diffusion tensor imaging tractography, followed by graph-theoretical analyses to compute the global efficiency. Conventional MRI markers for SVD, that is, white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume, number of lacunes, and microbleeds, were assessed.ResultsBaseline global efficiency was not related to changes in gait performance, while decline in global efficiency over time was significantly associated with gait decline (ie, increase in TUG time), independent of conventional MRI markers for SVD. Neither baseline cognitive performance nor cognitive decline was associated with gait decline.ConclusionsWe found that disruption of the white matter structural network was associated with gait decline over time, while the effect of cognitive decline was not. This suggests that structural network disruption has an important role in explaining the pathophysiology of gait decline in older patients with SVD, independent of cognitive decline.
