Project description:We aimed to assess the relationship between subjective sleep quality and occupationally-relevant outcomes in military personnel. Participants were from an elite unit of US Army soldiers who worked extended (~30 h) shifts (with minimal recovery time between shifts) during 3-week work sessions. Questionnaires assessing subjective sleep quality during the month prior (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]) were administered at the beginning of the session. Occupational outcomes (emotional exhaustion, functional impairment, role overload, daytime sleepiness) were assessed on the final day of the session. Regression analyses were conducted to link sleep quality and occupational outcomes. The study sample participants had relatively poor sleep prior to the exercise (PSQI Global score average = 6.3 ± 3.1). Higher PSQI Global Scores prior to the work session longitudinally predicted daytime sleepiness (f 2: 0.56) after the work session. PSQI component 7, which queries daytime dysfunction attributed to poor sleep quality, longitudinally predicted emotional exhaustion, functional impairment, and role overload (f 2 range: 0.19-0.70). In conclusion, poor sleep quality-in aggregation with occupationally-mandated sleep loss-is predictive of poorer subsequent occupational outcomes. Future work should aim to increase sleep opportunities prior to occupationally-mandated sleep loss in order to build resilience when sleep loss is unavoidable.
Project description:ObjectiveTo examine the independent and joint relationships of poor subjective sleep quality and antepartum depression with suicidal ideation among pregnant women.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 641 pregnant women attending prenatal care clinics in Lima, Peru. Antepartum depression and suicidal ideation were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scale. Antepartum subjective sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic regression procedures were performed to estimate odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) adjusted for confounders.ResultsOverall, the prevalence of suicidal ideation in this cohort was 16.8% and poor subjective sleep quality was more common among women endorsing suicidal ideation as compared to their counterparts who did not (47.2% vs. 24.8%, P<.001). After adjustment for confounders including maternal depression, poor subjective sleep quality (defined using the recommended criteria of PSQI global score of >5 vs. ≤5) was associated with a 1.7-fold increased odds of suicidal ideation (aOR=1.67; 95% CI 1.02-2.71). When assessed as a continuous variable, each 1-unit increase in the global PSQI score resulted in an 18% increase in odds for suicidal ideation, even after adjusting for depression (aOR=1.18; 95% CI 1.08-1.28). Women with both poor subjective sleep quality and depression had a 3.5-fold increased odds of suicidal ideation (aOR=3.48; 95% CI 1.96-6.18) as compared with those who had neither risk factor.ConclusionPoor subjective sleep quality was associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation. Replication of these findings may promote investments in studies designed to examine the efficacy of sleep-focused interventions to treat pregnant women with sleep disorders and suicidal ideation.
Project description:Introduction:Social media (SM) usage has increased markedly among young adults. It is linked to poor sleep quality (PSQ), a risk factor for mental and physical health concerns. This study identified the determinants of PSQ in SM users among freshman college students. Material and Methods:A cross-sectional design was used and 842 students completed a self-administered questionnaire. Analyses were performed using the ? 2 test to examine differences in the characteristics of poor and good sleepers and logistic regression to estimate the risk of PSQ with reference to SM usage patterns. Results:Around 75.40% (n = 635) of the participants had PSQ. There was a significant difference in the PSQ rate between males (66.3%) and females (79.3%, p < 0.001), those who were physically active (67.2%) and those who were not (82.4%, p < 0.001), those who were mentally depressed (86.5%) and those who were not (61.5%, p < 0.001), and those with anxiety (87.8%) and those without (64.3%, p < 0.001). The risk of PSQ was lower among students who used SM for education (OR = 0.65, CI = 0.42 to 0.99, p = 0.048), had higher laptop usage (OR = 0.67, CI = 0.47 to 0.96, p = 0.03), and had higher SM usage during daytime (OR = 0.46, CI = 0.32 to 0.67, p < 0.001). The risk of PSQ was higher among those who reported SM usage at bedtime (OR = 1.69, CI = 1.01 to 2.81, p = 0.046). Discussion:Among SM users, PSQ was related to sociodemographic features, lifestyle characteristics, and health-risk factors. Further research is required to confirm these findings.
Project description:OBJECTIVES:We examined interactions between adolescents' sleep duration and quality as predictors of their internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors. As a secondary aim, we assessed adolescent sex, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) as additional moderators of risk (ie, 3-way interactions among sleep duration; quality; and sex, race, or SES). DESIGN:The study used a cross-sectional design. SETTING:Participants were from small towns and semirural communities in Alabama. PARTICIPANTS:The sample consisted of 235 adolescents (Mage = 15.78 years, SD = 9.60 months) and was diverse with respect to sex (54% female), race/ethnicity (32% Black/African American, 67% White), and SES. MEASUREMENTS:Sleep duration (actual sleep minutes) was examined with actigraphs for 1 week. Adolescents reported on their subjective sleep quality, internalizing symptoms, and externalizing behavior with psychometrically sound measures. RESULTS:Findings revealed interactions between sleep duration and sleep quality as predictors of adolescents' adjustment. Adolescents with both short sleep duration in conjunction with poor sleep quality had the highest levels of internalizing symptoms and aggressive and rule-breaking behavior. SES interacted with sleep duration and sleep quality to predict rule-breaking behavior, and the highest level of problems was observed for adolescents from lower-SES homes who had short sleep duration accompanied by poor sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS:Findings identify the conjoint role of sleep duration and quality as predictors of adolescents' socioemotional adjustment and emphasize the importance of examining multiple sleep parameters simultaneously toward a better understanding of adaptation in adolescence.
Project description:In both clinical and observational studies, sleep quality is usually assessed by subjective self-report. The literature is mixed about how accurately these self-reports track objectively (e.g. via polysomnography) assessed sleep quality, with frequent reports of little to no association. However, previous research on this question focused on between-subject designs, which may be confounded by trait-level variables. In the current study, we used the novel Budapest Sleep, Experiences and Traits Study (BSETS) dataset to investigate if within-subject differences in subjectively reported sleep quality are related to sleep macrostructure and quantitative EEG variables assessed using a mobile EEG headband. We found clear evidence that self-reported sleep quality in the morning is influenced by within-subject variations in sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, total sleep time, and sleep efficiency. These effects were replicated if detailed sleep composition metrics (percentage and latency of specific vigilance states) or two alternative measures of subjective sleep quality were used instead. We found no effect of the number of awakenings or relative EEG delta and sigma power. Between-subject effects (relationships between individual mean values of sleep metrics and subjective sleep quality) were also found, highlighting that analyses focusing only on these may be erroneous. Our findings show that while previous investigations of this issue may have been confounded by between-subject effects, objective sleep quality is indeed reflected in subjective sleep ratings.
Project description:Since the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, adolescents' emerging mental health and behavior issues have been an international public health concern. This longitudinal study aimed to examine the situation of poor sleep quality, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents and to explore the associations between them before and during COVID-19. A total of 1,952 middle and high school students as eligible participants at baseline (pre-COVID-19, Wave 1; response rate: 98.79%), 1,831 eligible students were followed up at Wave 2 (October 2019 to December 2019, pre-COVID-19; retention rate: 93.80%), and 1,790 completed the follow-up at Wave 3 (during the COVID-19; retention rate: 97.80%). The mean age of the baseline students was 13.56 (SD: 1.46) years. The differences in anxiety and depressive symptoms between Wave 1, Wave 2, and Wave 3 were not statistically significant. The proportion of students with poor sleep quality increased over time, from Wave 1 (21.0%) to Wave 3 (26.0%, OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.17-1.60, P = 0.001) and from Wave 2 (21.9%) to Wave 3 (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.11-1.51, P < 0.001). The cross-lagged generalized linear mixed models revealed that the concurrent and cross-lagged associations of poor sleep quality with anxiety symptoms across the three waves were significant (P < 0.05) and vice versa. Only a marginally significant positive cross-lagged association between poor sleep quality at Wave 2 and depressive symptoms at Wave 3 was found (standardized β estimate = 0.044, SE = 0.022, P = 0.045). Sleep quality was adversely affected during COVID-19, and the bidirectional associations of poor sleep quality with anxiety symptoms could not be neglected.
Project description:The objective of this study was to verify whether the assessment of poor sleep based on two sleep scales could predict suicidal ideation in Japanese dayworkers. A longitudinal survey was conducted among 446 Japanese dayworkers working at a company in Japan. Questionnaires were administered in 2013 (baseline) and 2014 (follow-up). To evaluate suicidal ideation, we used Question 19 of the Self-rating Depression Scale, categorizing participants who chose response options "some/a good part/most of the time" as suicidal ideation (+), and those who chose option "never or only a little of the time" as suicidal ideation (-). Two sleep scales, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the 3-Dimensional Sleep Scale (3DSS), were selected as potential predictors of suicidal ideation. Only participants who were suicidal ideation (-) at baseline were included in the analysis, and suicidal ideation (+) individuals at follow-up were considered to have developed suicidal ideation during the interval between baseline and follow-up surveys. Data from 293 participants (236 men, 57 women) were analyzed. Twenty-two participants (7.5%) became suicidal ideation (+) at follow-up. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that only sleep quality of the 3DSS subscale significantly predicted suicidal ideation, even after adjusting for depressive symptoms. That is, assessment of poor sleep did not predict suicidal ideation when based on the PSQI, but did when based on the 3DSS. Assessment of sleep quality based on the 3DSS may prove more useful in predicting worker suicidal ideation in industrial settings with limited facilities than PSQI.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s41105-022-00404-6.
Project description:Study objectivesPoor sleep is one of the multiple health issues associated with heavy alcohol consumption. While acute effects of alcohol intake on sleep have been widely investigated, the longitudinal associations remain relatively underexplored. The objective of our research was to shed light on cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between alcohol use and poor sleep quality over time, and to elucidate the role of familial confounding factors in such associations.MethodsUsing self-report questionnaire data from the Older Finnish Twin Cohort (N = 13 851), we examined how alcohol consumption and binge drinking are associated with sleep quality during a period of 36 years.ResultsCross-sectional logistic regression analyses revealed significant associations between poor sleep and alcohol misuse, including heavy and binge drinking, at all four time points (OR range = 1.61-3.37, p < .05), suggesting that higher alcohol intake is associated with poor sleep quality over the years. Longitudinal cross-lagged analyses indicated that moderate, heavy and binge drinking predict poor sleep quality (OR range = 1.25-1.76, p < .05), but not the reverse. Within-pair analyses suggested that the associations between heavy drinking and poor sleep quality were not fully explained by genetic and environmental influences shared by the co-twins.ConclusionsIn conclusion, our findings support previous literature in that alcohol use is associated with poor sleep quality, such that alcohol use predicts poor sleep quality later in life, but not vice versa, and that the association is not fully explained by familial factors.
Project description:Objective/backgroundSelf-reported sleep difficulties, such as insomnia symptoms, have been reported among adolescents. Yet, studies of their prevalence and correlates are scarce among Latin Americans. This study sought (1) to describe associations between sociodemographic and lifestyle factors with self-reported sleep difficulties and (2) to examine associations between self-reported sleep difficulties and actigraphy-based sleep.ParticipantsParticipants included 477 Mexican adolescents from the ELEMENT cohort.MethodsOver 7 days, self-reported sleep measures (hard time falling asleep, overall sleep difficulties, and specific types of sleep difficulties) were obtained from daily sleep diaries. Actigraphy-based sleep measures (duration, i.e. sleep onset to morning wake, midpoint, and fragmentation) were concurrently assessed using a wrist actigraph.ResultsMean (SD) age was 15.9 (2.2) years, and 53.5% were females. Mean (SD) sleep duration was 8.5 (1.2) h/night. Half reported a hard time falling asleep at least 3 days, and 25% had sleep difficulties at least 3 days over 7 days. The 3 types of sleep difficulties commonly reported among the entire cohort were insomnia/restlessness (29%), environmental (27%), and mental/emotional difficulties (19%). Female sex, smoking behavior, and socioeconomic indicators were among the most consistent factors associated with sleep difficulties. Subjective sleep difficulties were associated with shorter sleep duration (β = -20.8 [-35.3, -6.2] min), while subjective hard time falling asleep was associated with longer sleep duration (β = 11.3 [4.6, 27.2] min).ConclusionA high proportion of Mexican adolescents in the sample reported sleep difficulties. Findings demonstrate the importance of obtaining subjective and objective sleep measures for a more comprehensive assessment of adolescent sleep.
Project description:Unhappiness at school is one of the main reasons for truancy among adolescents. In order to assess this problem more thoroughly in the context of Japanese adolescents, the present study examined the associations between feelings of unhappiness at school and lifestyle habits, school life realities, and mental health status.This study was designed as a cross-sectional survey. A self-administered questionnaire was provided to students enrolled in randomly selected junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. We calculated the percentages of both junior and senior high school students who felt unhappy at school based on factors related to school life, lifestyle habits, and mental health status. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed in order to examine the associations between those factors and students' feelings of unhappiness at school.A total of 98,867 valid responses were analysed, 7.9% (Boys: 8.4%, Girls: 7.4%) of which came from students who responded that they felt unhappy at school. For both junior and senior high school students, the percentages of those who felt unhappy at school were significantly higher among those who had not yet decided on their future life course, who did not participate in extracurricular activities, did not eat breakfast every day, went to bed late, had used tobacco or alcohol in the previous 30 days, and had poor mental health compared with others. The results of multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that the adjusted odds ratios for feeling unhappy at school with regard to the above-mentioned factors were significantly high for both junior and senior high school students.The present results suggest that school employees and administrators must provide health guidance to students, considering that irregular lifestyle habits, lower school engagement, smoking, drinking alcohol, and poor mental health status are all associated with maladaptation to school among adolescents.
