All-Hydrocarbon-Ligated Superatomic Gold/Aluminum Clusters.

ABSTRACT: Key strategies in cluster synthesis include the use of modulating agents (e.g., coordinating additives). We studied the influence of various phosphines exhibiting different steric and electronic properties on the reduction of the Au(I) precursor to Au(0) clusters. We report a synthesis of the bimetallic clusters [Au₆(AlCp*)₆] = [Au₆Al₆](Cp*)₆ (1) and [HAu₇(AlCp*)₆] = [HAu₇Al₆](Cp*)₆ (2) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene) using Au(I) precursors and AlCp*. The cluster [Au₂(AlCp*)₅] = [Au₂Al₅](Cp*)₅ (3) was isolated and identified as an intermediate species in the reactions to 1 and 2. The processes of cluster growth and degradation were investigated by in situ ¹H NMR and LIFDI-MS techniques. The structures of 1 and 2 were established by DFT geometry optimization. These octahedral clusters can both be described as closed-shell 18-electron superatoms.

Hierarchical nanosheets built from superatomic clusters: properties, exfoliation and single-crystal-to-single-crystal intercalation.

Project description:Tuning the properties of atomic crystals in the two-dimensional (2D) limit is synthetically challenging, but critical to unlock their potential in fundamental research and nanotechnology alike. 2D crystals assembled using superatomic blocks could provide a route to encrypt desirable functionality, yet strategies to link the inorganic blocks together in predetermined dimensionality or symmetry are scarce. Here, we describe the synthesis of anisotropic van der Waals crystalline frameworks using the designer superatomic nanocluster Co3(py)3Co6Se8L6 (py = pyridine, L = Ph2PN(Tol)), and ditopic linkers. Post-synthetically, the 3D crystals can be mechanically exfoliated into ultrathin flakes (8 to 60 nm), or intercalated with the redox-active guest tetracyanoethylene in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. Extensive characterization, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals how intrinsic features of the nanocluster, such as its structure, chirality, redox-activity and magnetic profile, predetermine key properties of the emerging 2D structures. Within the nanosheets, the strict and unusual stereoselectivity of the nanocluster's Co edges for the low symmetry (α,α,β) isomer gives rise to in-plane structural anisotropy, while the helically chiral nanoclusters self-organize into alternating Δ- and Λ-homochiral rows. The nanocluster's high-spin Co edges, and its rich redox profile make the nanosheets both magnetically and electrochemically active, as revealed by solid state magnetic and cyclic voltammetry studies. The length and flexibility of the ditopic linker was varied, and found to have a secondary effect on the structure and stacking of the nanosheets within the 3D crystals. With these results we introduce a deterministic and versatile synthetic entry to programmable functionality and symmetry in 2D superatomic crystals.

Synthesis and structural characterization of inverse-coordination clusters from a two-electron superatomic copper nanocluster.

Project description:We have synthesized and structurally characterized a series of centred cuboctahedral copper clusters, namely [Cu13{S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 1a-d (where a: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Me; b: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Et; c: R = iPr, R' = CO2Et; d: R = n Pr, R' = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3); [Cu12(μ12-S){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4], 2a-c; [Cu12(μ12-Cl){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 3a-e (where e: R = n Bu, R' = Ph); [Cu12(μ12-Br){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh}4](PF6), 4e; and [Cu12(μ12-Cl)(μ3-Cl){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCO2Me}3]+ 5a. Cluster 1a is the first structurally characterized copper cluster having a Cu13 centered cuboctahedral arrangement, a miniature of the bulk copper fcc structure. Furthermore, the partial Cu(0) character in the 2-electron superatoms 1 was confirmed by XANES. Inverse coordination clusters 2-5 are the first examples of copper clusters containing main group elements (Cl, Br, S) with a hyper-coordination number, twelve. A combined theoretical and experimental study was performed, which shows that the central copper (formally Cu1-) in nanoclusters 1 can be replaced by chalcogen/halogen atoms, resulting in the formation of clusters 2-5 which show enhanced luminescence properties and increase in the ionic component of the host-guest interaction as Br ≈ Cl > S > Cu, which is consistent with the Cu-X Wiberg indices. The new compounds have been characterized by ESI-MS, 1H, 13C NMR, IR, UV-visible, emission spectroscopy, and the structures 2a-b, 3d-e, 4e and 5a were established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

CO2 Capture by 2-(Methylamino)pyridine Ligated Aluminum Alkyl Complexes.

Project description:A set of novel, easily synthesized aluminum complexes, Al[κ2-N,N-2-(methylamino)pyridine]2R (R = Et, iBu) are reported. When subjected to 1 atm of CO2 pressure, each hemilabile pyridine arm dissociates and facilitates cooperative activation of the CO2 substrate reminiscent of a Frustrated Lewis Pair. This reaction has limited precedent for Al/N based Lewis Pair systems, and this is the first system readily shown to sequester multiple equivalents of CO2 per aluminum center. The ethyl variant then reacts further, inserting a third equivalent of CO2 into the aluminum alkyl to generate an aluminum carboxylate. Examples of this type of reactivity are rare under thermal conditions. A joint experimental/computational study supports the proposed reaction mechanism.

Reversible cycling between cysteine persulfide-ligated [2Fe-2S] and cysteine-ligated [4Fe-4S] clusters in the FNR regulatory protein.

Project description:Fumarate and nitrate reduction (FNR) regulatory proteins are O(2)-sensing bacterial transcription factors that control the switch between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Under anaerobic conditions [4Fe-4S](2+)-FNR exists as a DNA-binding homodimer. In response to elevated oxygen levels, the [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster undergoes a rapid conversion to a [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster, resulting in a dimer-to-monomer transition and loss of site-specific DNA binding. In this work, resonance Raman and UV-visible absorption/CD spectroscopies and MS were used to characterize the interconversion between [4Fe-4S](2+) and [2Fe-2S](2+) clusters in Escherichia coli FNR. Selective (34)S labeling of the bridging sulfides in the [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster-bound form of FNR facilitated identification of resonantly enhanced Cys(32)S-(34)S stretching modes in the resonance Raman spectrum of the O(2)-exposed [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster-bound form of FNR. This result indicates O(2)-induced oxidation and retention of bridging sulfides in the form of [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster-bound cysteine persulfides. MS also demonstrates that multiple cysteine persulfides are formed on O(2) exposure of [4Fe-4S](2+)-FNR. The [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster in FNR can also be regenerated from the cysteine persulfide-coordinated [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster by anaerobic incubation with DTT and Fe(2+) ion in the absence of exogenous sulfide. Resonance Raman data indicate that this type of cluster conversion involving sulfide oxidation is not unique to FNR, because it also occurs in O(2)-exposed forms of O(2)-sensitive [4Fe-4S] clusters in radical S-adenosylmethionine enzymes. The results provide fresh insight into the molecular mechanism of O(2) sensing by FNR and iron-sulfur cluster conversion reactions in general, and suggest unique mechanisms for the assembly or repair of biological [4Fe-4S] clusters.

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase.

Project description:Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ2-C atoms and four pendant S donors.The [L2Fe2] (L = {[Ph2P(S)]2C}2-) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe2II and mixed-valence FeIIFeIII. The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide tBuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C-C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

Protonation and Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at S-Ligated [4Fe-4S] Clusters.

Project description:Biological [Fe-S] clusters are increasingly recognized to undergo proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), but the site of protonation, mechanism, and role for PCET remains largely unknown. Here we explore this reactivity with synthetic model clusters. Protonation of the arylthiolate-ligated [4Fe-4S] cluster [Fe4 S4 (SAr)4 ](2-) (1, SAr=S-2,4-6-(iPr)3 C6 H2 ) leads to thiol dissociation, reversibly forming [Fe4 S4 (SAr)3 L](1-) (2) and ArSH (L=solvent, and/or conjugate base). Solutions of 2+ArSH react with the nitroxyl radical TEMPO to give [Fe4 S4 (SAr)4 ](1-) (1ox ) and TEMPOH. This reaction involves PCET coupled to thiolate association and may proceed via the unobserved protonated cluster [Fe4 S4 (SAr)3 (HSAr)](1-) (1-H). Similar reactions with this and related clusters proceed comparably. An understanding of the PCET thermochemistry of this cluster system has been developed, encompassing three different redox levels and two protonation states.

Assembly of gold nanoparticles into aluminum nanobowl array.

Project description:We mimic unique honeycomb structure as well as its functions of storing honey and pollen to assemble Au nanoparticle pattern on honeycomb-like Al nanobowl array by utilizing solid state dewetting process. Patterned Au nanoarrays of 'one particle per bowl' with tunable plasmonic bands ranging from the visible to the near-infrared region are fabricated by finely selecting the initial thickness of Au film, the geometry of Al nanobowl array and the thermal treatment parameters. This work presents a powerful approach to assemble Au nanoparticles into high density nanoarrays with superior spatial resolution, offering highly concentrated electromagnetic fields for plasmonic sensor applications.

Dispersion-Controlled Gold-Aluminum-Silicon Dioxide-Aluminum Nanopawn Structures for Visible to NIR Light Modulation.

Project description:As an efficient patterning method for nanostructures, nanocolloidal lithography (NCL) presents a controllable and scalable means for achieving a uniform and good sidewall profile, and a high aspect ratio. While high selectivity between the etching mask and targeted materials is also essential for NCL-based precision nanophotonic structures, its realization in multi-material nanophotonic structures still remains a challenge due to the dielectric- or metallic-material-dependent etching selectivity. Here, dispersion-controlled Au-NCL is proposed, which enables high selectivity for Al and SiO2 over a Au nanoparticle (Au-NP) mask. Utilizing the proposed process, wafer-scale, uniformly dispersed multi-material nanopawn structures (Au-NPs/Al-SiO2 cylinders) on an Al ultrathin film are realized, obtaining excellent vertical sidewall (≈90°) and aspect ratio (>1). The high sidewall verticality and aspect ratio of the nanopawn structures support optical modes highly sensitive to the excitation direction of incident waves through the mixing of the interface-gap-assisted localized surface plasmons (GLSPs) formed in between the Au-NP and Al-disk interface, and plasmonic Fabry-Pérot (FP) modes formed in between the Al-disk and Al substrate; complementary spectral responses between reflected and scattered light are also demonstrated. As an application example, information encryption based on the triple-channel (i.e., reflection, scattering, and transmission) angle-dependent complementary-color responses is presented.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligand 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin enhances liver damage in bile duct-ligated mice.

Project description:The environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetracholorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is known to cause a wide variety of toxic effects, including hepatotoxicity, by way of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). Although inducible expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 and CYP1A2 is associated with liver injury caused by high-dose TCDD, the specific role of the AHR-CYP1 cascade in hepatotoxicity remains unclear. We investigated the effects of AHR activation under conditions of cholestasis. We administered oral TCDD to mice at a dose that can effectively induce Cyp1 gene expression without overt liver toxicity and then ligated their bile ducts. TCDD pretreatment enhanced bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced increases in liver and plasma bile acids, bilirubin, and aminotransferases. Histology of TCDD-pretreated BDL mice revealed massive hepatic necrosis without any increase in number of apoptotic cells. Whereas induction of AHR-target genes by TCDD was observed similarly in sham-operated as well as in BDL mice, TCDD pretreatment of BDL mice altered the expression of hepatic genes involved in bile acid synthesis and transport. Increased plasma proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1?, in BDL mice were further elevated by TCDD pretreatment. Liver injury by TCDD plus BDL, such as increased plasma bile acids, bilirubin and aminotransferases, liver necrosis, and increased tumor necrosis factor production, was exaggerated in Cyp1a1/1a2(-/-) double knockout mice. These findings indicate that TCDD aggravates cholestatic liver damage and that the presence of CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 plays a protective role in liver damage caused by TCDD and BDL.

Photo-induced transformation process at gold clusters-semiconductor interface: Implications for the complexity of gold clusters-based photocatalysis.

Project description:The recent thrust in utilizing atomically precise organic ligands protected gold clusters (Au clusters) as photosensitizer coupled with semiconductors for nano-catalysts has led to the claims of improved efficiency in photocatalysis. Nonetheless, the influence of photo-stability of organic ligands protected-Au clusters at the Au/semiconductor interface on the photocatalytic properties remains rather elusive. Taking Au clusters-TiO2 composites as a prototype, we for the first time demonstrate the photo-induced transformation of small molecular-like Au clusters to larger metallic Au nanoparticles under different illumination conditions, which leads to the diverse photocatalytic reaction mechanism. This transformation process undergoes a diffusion/aggregation mechanism accompanied with the onslaught of Au clusters by active oxygen species and holes resulting from photo-excited TiO2 and Au clusters. However, such Au clusters aggregation can be efficiently inhibited by tuning reaction conditions. This work would trigger rational structural design and fine condition control of organic ligands protected-metal clusters-semiconductor composites for diverse photocatalytic applications with long-term photo-stability.
