Resonant generation of propagating second-harmonic spin waves in nano-waveguides.

ABSTRACT: Generation of second-harmonic waves is one of the universal nonlinear phenomena that have found numerous technical applications in many modern technologies, in particular, in photonics. This phenomenon also has great potential in the field of magnonics, which considers the use of spin waves in magnetic nanostructures to implement wave-based signal processing and computing. However, due to the strong frequency dependence of the phase velocity of spin waves, resonant phase-matched generation of second-harmonic spin waves has not yet been achieved in practice. Here, we show experimentally that such a process can be realized using a combination of different modes of nano-sized spin-wave waveguides based on low-damping magnetic insulators. We demonstrate that our approach enables efficient spatially-extended energy transfer between interacting waves, which can be controlled by the intensity of the initial wave and the static magnetic field.

Spin transfer torque driven higher-order propagating spin waves in nano-contact magnetic tunnel junctions.

Project description:Short wavelength exchange-dominated propagating spin waves will enable magnonic devices to operate at higher frequencies and higher data transmission rates. While giant magnetoresistance (GMR)-based magnetic nanocontacts are efficient injectors of propagating spin waves, the generated wavelengths are 2.6 times the nano-contact diameter, and the electrical signal strength remains too weak for applications. Here we demonstrate nano-contact-based spin wave generation in magnetic tunnel junctions and observe large-frequency steps consistent with the hitherto ignored possibility of second- and third-order propagating spin waves with wavelengths of 120 and 74 nm, i.e., much smaller than the 150-nm nanocontact. Mutual synchronization is also observed on all three propagating modes. These higher-order propagating spin waves will enable magnonic devices to operate at much higher frequencies and greatly increase their transmission rates and spin wave propagating lengths, both proportional to the much higher group velocity.

Metasurface-assisted phase-matching-free second harmonic generation in lithium niobate waveguides.

Project description:The phase-matching condition is a key aspect in nonlinear wavelength conversion processes, which requires the momenta of the photons involved in the processes to be conserved. Conventionally, nonlinear phase matching is achieved using either birefringent or periodically poled nonlinear crystals, which requires careful dispersion engineering and is usually narrowband. In recent years, metasurfaces consisting of densely packed arrays of optical antennas have been demonstrated to provide an effective optical momentum to bend light in arbitrary ways. Here, we demonstrate that gradient metasurface structures consisting of phased array antennas are able to circumvent the phase-matching requirement in on-chip nonlinear wavelength conversion. We experimentally demonstrate phase-matching-free second harmonic generation over many coherent lengths in thin film lithium niobate waveguides patterned with the gradient metasurfaces. Efficient second harmonic generation in the metasurface-based devices is observed over a wide range of pump wavelengths (λ = 1580-1650 nm).

Spin-orbit torque-driven propagating spin waves.

Project description:Spin-orbit torque (SOT) can drive sustained spin wave (SW) auto-oscillations in a class of emerging microwave devices known as spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs), which have highly nonlinear properties governing robust mutual synchronization at frequencies directly amenable to high-speed neuromorphic computing. However, all demonstrations have relied on localized SW modes interacting through dipolar coupling and/or direct exchange. As nanomagnonics requires propagating SWs for data transfer and additional computational functionality can be achieved using SW interference, SOT-driven propagating SWs would be highly advantageous. Here, we demonstrate how perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can raise the frequency of SOT-driven auto-oscillations in magnetic nanoconstrictions well above the SW gap, resulting in the efficient generation of field and current tunable propagating SWs. Our demonstration greatly extends the functionality and design freedom of SHNOs, enabling long-range SOT-driven SW propagation for nanomagnonics, SW logic, and neuromorphic computing, directly compatible with CMOS technology.

Slow waves in locally resonant metamaterials line defect waveguides.

Project description:Many efforts have been devoted to wave slowing, as it is essential, for instance, in analog signal computing and is one prerequisite for increased wave/matter interactions. Despite the interest of many communities, researches have mostly been conducted in optics, where wavelength-scaled structured composite media are promising candidates for compact slow light components. Yet their structural scale prevents them from being transposed to lower frequencies. Here, we propose to overcome this limitation using the deep sub-wavelength scale of locally resonant metamaterials. We experimentally show, in the microwave regime, that introducing coupled resonant defects in such metamaterials creates sub-wavelength waveguides in which wave propagation exhibit reduced group velocities. We qualitatively explain the mechanism underlying this slow wave propagation and demonstrate how it can be used to tune the velocity, achieving group indices as high as 227. We conclude by highlighting the three beneficial consequences of our line defect slow wave waveguides: (1) the sub-wavelength scale making it a compact platform for low frequencies (2) the large group indices that together with the extreme field confinement enables efficient wave/matter interactions and (3) the fact that, contrarily to other approaches, slow wave propagation does not occur at the expense of drastic bandwidth reductions.

Spin-polarized Second Harmonic Generation from the Antiferromagnetic CaCoSO Single Crystal.

Project description:The spin-polarized second harmonic generation (SHG) of the recently synthesized CaCoSO single crystal is performed based on the calculated electronic band structure. The calculation reveals that the spin-up (↑) channel of CaCoSO possesses a direct energy gap (Γv-Γc) of about 2.187 eV, 1.187 eV (Kv-Kc) for the spin-down (↓) channel and an indirect gap (Γv-Kc) of about 0.4 eV for the spin-polarized CaCoSO single crystal. The linear optical properties obtained reveal that the recently synthesized crystal exhibits considerable anisotropy with negative uniaxial anisotropy and birefringence favor to enhance the SHG. We have calculated the three non-zero tensor components of the SHG and found the is the dominat component, one with a large SHG of about (d33 = 6.936 pm/V at λ = 1064 nm), the half value of KTiOPO4 (KTP). As the values of (↑) < (↓) < spin-polarized are related to the values of the energy gap of (↑) 2.187 eV> (↓) 1.187 eV> spin-polarized gap 0.4 eV; therefore, a smaller energy gap gives better SHG performance. Furthermore, the microscopic first hyperpolarizability, βijk, is calculated.

Excitation of coherent propagating spin waves by pure spin currents.

Project description:Utilization of pure spin currents not accompanied by the flow of electrical charge provides unprecedented opportunities for the emerging technologies based on the electron's spin degree of freedom, such as spintronics and magnonics. It was recently shown that pure spin currents can be used to excite coherent magnetization dynamics in magnetic nanostructures. However, because of the intrinsic nonlinear self-localization effects, magnetic auto-oscillations in the demonstrated devices were spatially confined, preventing their applications as sources of propagating spin waves in magnonic circuits using these waves as signal carriers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate efficient excitation and directional propagation of coherent spin waves generated by pure spin current. We show that this can be achieved by using the nonlocal spin injection mechanism, which enables flexible design of magnetic nanosystems and allows one to efficiently control their dynamic characteristics.

High-throughput screening of drug-lipid membrane interactions via counter-propagating second harmonic generation imaging.

Project description:Here we report the use of counter-propagating second harmonic generation (SHG) to image the interactions between the local anesthetic tetracaine and a multicomponent planar supported lipid bilayer array in a label-free manner. The lipid bilayer arrays, prepared using a 3D continuous flow microspotter, allow the effects of lipid phase and cholesterol content on tetracaine binding to be examined simultaneously. SHG images show that tetracaine has a higher binding affinity to liquid-crystalline phase lipids than to solid-gel phase lipids. The presence of 28 mol % cholesterol decreased the binding affinity of tetracaine to bilayers composed of the mixed chain lipid, 1-steroyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phophocholine (SOPC), and the saturated lipids 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phophocholine (DMPC) and 1,2-dipamitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phophocholine (DPPC) while having no effect on diunsaturated 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phophocholine (DOPC). The maximum surface excess of tetracaine increases with the degree of unsaturation of the phospholipids and decreases with cholesterol in the lipid bilayers. The paper demonstrates that SHG imaging is a sensitive technique that can directly image and quantitatively measure the association of a drug to a multicomponent lipid bilayer array, providing a high-throughput means to assess drug-membrane interactions.

Highly efficient broadband second harmonic generation mediated by mode hybridization and nonlinearity patterning in compact fiber-integrated lithium niobate nano-waveguides.

Project description:The inherent trade-off between efficiency and bandwidth of three-wave mixing processes in ?2 nonlinear waveguides is the major impediment for scaling down many well-established frequency conversion schemes onto the level of integrated photonic circuit. Here, we show that hybridization between modes of a silica microfiber and a LiNbO3 nanowaveguide, amalgamated with laminar ?2 patterning, offers an elegant approach for engineering broadband phase matching and high efficiency of three-wave mixing processes in an ultra-compact and natively fiber-integrated setup. We demonstrate exceptionally high normalized second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of up to ?nor???460% W-1 cm-2, combined with a large phase matching bandwidth of ?????100?nm (bandwidth-length product of ?? · L???5??m2) near the telecom bands, and extraordinary adjustment flexibility.

Deciphering second harmonic generation signals.

Project description:Second harmonic generation (SHG) has emerged as one of the most powerful techniques used to selectively monitor surface dynamics and reactions for all types of interfaces as well as for imaging non-centrosymmetric structures, although the molecular origin of the SHG signal is still poorly understood. Here, we present a breakthrough approach to predict and interpret the SHG signal at the atomic level, which is freed from the hyperpolarisability concept and self-consistently considers the non-locality and the coupling with the environment. The direct ab initio method developed here shows that a bulk quadrupole contribution significantly overwhelms the interface dipole term in the purely interfacial induced second-order polarisation for water/air interfaces. The obtained simulated SHG responses are in unprecedented agreement with the experimental signal. This work not only paves the road for the prediction of SHG response from more complex interfaces of all types, but also suggests new insights in the interpretation of the SHG signal at a molecular level. In particular, it highlights the modest influence of the molecular orientation and the high significance of the bulk quadrupole contribution, which does not depend on the interface, in the total experimental response.

Second Harmonic Generation of Unpolarized Light.

Project description:A Mueller tensor mathematical framework was applied for predicting and interpreting the second harmonic generation (SHG) produced with an unpolarized fundamental beam. In deep tissue imaging through SHG and multiphoton fluorescence, partial or complete depolarization of the incident light complicates polarization analysis. The proposed framework has the distinct advantage of seamlessly merging the purely polarized theory based on the Jones or Cartesian susceptibility tensors with a more general Mueller tensor framework capable of handling partial depolarized fundamental and/or SHG produced. The predictions of the model are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements of z-cut quartz and mouse tail tendon obtained with polarized and depolarized incident light. The polarization-dependent SHG produced with unpolarized fundamental allowed determination of collagen fiber orientation in agreement with orthogonal methods based on image analysis. This method has the distinct advantage of being immune to birefringence or depolarization of the fundamental beam for structural analysis of tissues.
