A weak subducting slab at intermediate depths below northeast Japan.

ABSTRACT: Knowledge of the state of stress in subducting slabs is essential for understanding their mechanical behavior and the physical processes that generate earthquakes. Here, we develop a framework which uses a high-resolution focal mechanism catalog to determine the change in the position of the neutral plane before and after the M9 Tohoku-oki earthquake to determine that the deviatoric stress within the slab at intermediate depths must be very low (∼1 MPa). We show that by combining the static stress calculated from coseismic slip distributions with the stress orientations before and after the mainshock, we can determine the full deviatoric stress tensor within the subducting slab at intermediate depths. These results preclude earthquake source mechanisms that require large background driving stresses, favoring a mechanically weak subducting slab, thus providing quantitative constraints on the physical processes that generate intermediate-depth earthquakes.

Mantle wedge infiltrated with saline fluids from dehydration and decarbonation of subducting slab.

Project description:Slab-derived fluids play an important role in heat and material transfer in subduction zones. Dehydration and decarbonation reactions of minerals in the subducting slab have been investigated using phase equilibria and modeling of fluid flow. Nevertheless, direct observations of the fluid chemistry and pressure-temperature conditions of fluids are few. This report describes CO2-bearing saline fluid inclusions in spinel-harzburgite xenoliths collected from the 1991 Pinatubo pumice deposits. The fluid inclusions are filled with saline solutions with 5.1 ± 1.0% (wt) NaCl-equivalent magnesite crystals, CO2-bearing vapor bubbles, and a talc and/or chrysotile layer on the walls. The xenoliths contain tremolite amphibole, which is stable in temperatures lower than 830 °C at the uppermost mantle. The Pinatubo volcano is located at the volcanic front of the Luzon arc associated with subduction of warm oceanic plate. The present observation suggests hydration of forearc mantle and the uppermost mantle by slab-derived CO2-bearing saline fluids. Dehydration and decarbonation take place, and seawater-like saline fluids migrate from the subducting slab to the mantle wedge. The presence of saline fluids is important because they can dissolve more metals than pure H2O and affect the chemical evolution of the mantle wedge.

Tracing the subducting Pacific slab to the mantle transition zone with hydrogen isotopes.

Project description:Hydrogen isotopes have been widely used as powerful tracers to understand the origin of terrestrial water and the water circulation between the surface and the deep interior of the Earth. However, further quantitative understanding is hindered due to a lack of observations about the changes in D/H ratios of a slab during subduction. Here, we report hydrogen isotope data of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from active volcanoes with variable depths (90‒550 km) to the subducting Pacific slab. The results show that the D/H ratio of the slab fluid at the volcanic front is lower than that of the slab fluid just behind the volcanic front. This demonstrates that fluids with different D/H ratios were released from the crust and the underlying peridotite portions of the slab around the volcanic front. The results also show that the D/H ratios of slab fluids do not change significantly with slab depths from 300 to 550 km, which demonstrates that slab dehydration did not occur significantly beyond the arc. Our estimated δD‰ value for the slab materials that accumulated in the mantle transition zone is > - 90‰, a value which is significantly higher than previous estimates.

Tomography of the subducting Pacific slab and the 2015 Bonin deepest earthquake (Mw 7.9).

Project description:On 30 May 2015 an isolated deep earthquake (~670 km, Mw 7.9) occurred to the west of the Bonin Islands. To clarify its causal mechanism and its relationship to the subducting Pacific slab, we determined a detailed P-wave tomography of the deep earthquake source zone using a large number of arrival-time data. Our results show that this large deep event occurred within the subducting Pacific slab which is penetrating into the lower mantle. In the Izu-Bonin region, the Pacific slab is split at ~28° north latitude, i.e., slightly north of the 2015 deep event hypocenter. In the north the slab becomes stagnant in the mantle transition zone, whereas in the south the slab is directly penetrating into the lower mantle. This deep earthquake was caused by joint effects of several factors, including the Pacific slab's fast deep subduction, slab tearing, slab thermal variation, stress changes and phase transformations in the slab, and complex interactions between the slab and the ambient mantle.

Understanding subduction infancy to mature subduction in Southwest Japan via the self-consistent formation of a weak slab interface.

Project description:The weak slab interface controls long-term subduction dynamics. A weak hydrous layer at the slab interface promotes mechanical decoupling between the forearc mantle and the subducting slab and converts a hot forearc mantle to a cold mantle. Often referred to as a cold nose, the cold forearc mantle, plays a key role in the transition from subduction infancy to mature subduction. This study was the first to numerically demonstrate the self-consistent formation of a weak hydrous layer with permeability anisotropy based on the Southwest Japan subduction zone case, where transition-related geological features were present. Our models showed that mechanical decoupling by spontaneous downdip growth of the weak hydrous layer created a cold nose by converting a hot forearc mantle to a cold mantle. The emergence of a cold nose explained the migration of the forearc-to-arc volcanic front, expressed as the formation of mid-Miocene forearc high-magnesium andesite and Quaternary arc adakite. Furthermore, the weak hydrous layer providing a pathway for free-water transport toward the mantle wedge tip elucidates slab/mantle-derived geochemical components in deep groundwater as well as large S-wave delay times and non-volcanic seismic tremors in the forearc.

Gradual and selective trace-element enrichment in slab-released fluids at sub-arc depths.

Project description:The geochemical signature of magmas generated at convergent margins greatly depends on the nature of fluids and melts released during subduction. While major- and trace-elements transport capacity of ultrahigh pressure (UHP) hydrous-silicate melts has been investigated, little is known about solute enrichment and fractionation in UHP (>3.5-4 GPa) solute-rich aqueous fluids released along colder geothermal gradients. Here, we performed in situ LA-ICP-MS trace-element analyses on selected UHP prograde-to-peak fluid inclusions trapped in a kyanite-bearing quartzite from Sulu (China). The alkali-aluminosilicate-rich aqueous fluid released from the meta-sediments by dehydration reactions is enriched in LILE, U, Th, Sr, and REE. Inclusions trapped at increasing temperature (and pressure) preserve a gradual and selective trace-element enrichment resulting from the progressive dissolution of phengite and carbonate and the partial dissolution of allanite/monazite. We show that, at the investigated P-T conditions, aqueous fluids generated by dissolution of volatile-bearing minerals fractionate trace-element distinctly from hydrous-silicate melts, regardless of the source lithology. The orogenic/post-orogenic magmas generated in a mantle enriched by metasomatic processes involving either solute-rich aqueous fluids or hydrous-silicate melts released by the slab at UHP conditions can preserve evidence of the nature of these agents.

Laboratory investigation of crest height statistics in intermediate water depths.

Project description:This paper concerns the statistical distribution of the crest heights associated with surface waves in intermediate water depths. The results of a new laboratory study are presented in which data generated in different experimental facilities are used to establish departures from commonly applied statistical distributions. Specifically, the effects of varying sea-state steepness, effective water depth and directional spread are investigated. Following an extensive validation of the experimental data, including direct comparisons to available field data, it is shown that the nonlinear amplification of crest heights above second-order theory observed in steep deep water sea states is equally appropriate to intermediate water depths. These nonlinear amplifications increase with the sea-state steepness and reduce with the directional spread. While the latter effect is undoubtedly important, the present data confirm that significant amplifications above second order (5-10%) are observed for realistic directional spreads. This is consistent with available field data. With further increases in the sea-state steepness, the dissipative effects of wave breaking act to reduce these nonlinear amplifications. While the competing mechanisms of nonlinear amplification and wave breaking are relevant to a full range of water depths, the relative importance of wave breaking increases as the effective water depth reduces.

Carbonates and intermediate-depth seismicity: Stable and unstable shear in altered subducting plates and overlying mantle.

Project description:A model for intermediate-depth earthquakes of subduction zones is evaluated based on shear localization, shear heating, and runaway creep within thin carbonate layers in an altered downgoing oceanic plate and the overlying mantle wedge. Thermal shear instabilities in carbonate lenses add to potential mechanisms for intermediate-depth seismicity, which are based on serpentine dehydration and embrittlement of altered slabs or viscous shear instabilities in narrow fine-grained olivine shear zones. Peridotites in subducting plates and the overlying mantle wedge may be altered by reactions with CO2-bearing fluids sourced from seawater or the deep mantle, to form carbonate minerals, in addition to hydrous silicates. Effective viscosities of magnesian carbonates are higher than those for antigorite serpentine and they are markedly lower than those for H2O-saturated olivine. However, magnesian carbonates may extend to greater mantle depths than hydrous silicates at temperatures and pressures of subduction zones. Strain rates within altered downgoing mantle peridotites may be localized within carbonated layers following slab dehydration. A simple model of shear heating and temperature-sensitive creep of carbonate horizons, based on experimentally determined creep laws, predicts conditions of stable and unstable shear with strain rates up to 10/s, comparable to seismic velocities of frictional fault surfaces. Applied to intermediate-depth earthquakes of the Tonga subduction zone and the double Wadati-Benioff zone of NE Japan, this mechanism provides an alternative to the generation of earthquakes by dehydration embrittlement, beyond the stability of antigorite serpentine in subduction zones.

Contrasting volcano spacing along SW Japan arc caused by difference in age of subducting lithosphere.

Project description:The SW Japan arc built by subduction of the Philippine Sea (PHS) plate exhibits uneven distribution of volcanoes: thirteen Quaternary composite volcanoes form in the western half of this arc, Kyushu Island, while only two in the eastern half, Chugoku district. Reconstruction of the PHS plate back to 14 Ma, together with examinations based on thermal structure models constrained by high-density heat flow data and a petrological model for dehydration reactions suggest that fluids are discharged actively at depths of 90-100 km in the hydrous layer at the top of the old (> 50 Ma), hence, cold lithosphere sinking beneath Kyushu Island. In contrast, the young (15-25 Ma) oceanic crust downgoing beneath Chugoku district releases fluids largely at shallower depths, i.e. beneath the non-volcanic forearc, to cause characteristic tectonic tremors and low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) and be the source of specific brine springs. Much larger amounts of fluids supplied to the magma source region in the western SW Japan arc could build more densely-distributed volcanoes.

Atlantic Water warming increases melt below Northeast Greenland's last floating ice tongue.

Project description:The 79 North Glacier (79NG) features Greenland's largest floating ice tongue. Even though its extent has not changed significantly in recent years, observations have indicated a major thinning of the ice tongue from below. Both ocean warming and an increase in subglacial discharge from the ice sheet induced by atmospheric warming could increase the basal melt; however, available observations alone cannot tell which of these is the main driver. Here, we employ a global simulation which explicitly resolves the ocean circulation in the cavity with 700 m resolution to disentangle the impact of the ocean and atmosphere. We find that the interannual variability of basal melt below 79NG over the past 50 years is mainly associated with changes in the temperature of the Atlantic Intermediate Water inflow, which can be traced back across the Northeast Greenland continental shelf to the eastern Fram Strait with a lag of 3 years.

Snow depths' impact on soil microbial activities and carbon dioxide fluxes from a temperate wetland in Northeast China.

Project description:Snow depth may have a complex influence on carbon cycling in winter. Here we set up a field experiment to investigate how different snow depths (0 cm, 60 cm, 90 cm) influenced carbon dioxide (CO2) in a wetland. The mean ± standard error of CO2 emissions under snow addition treatments (60 cm and 90 cm snow depths) were 0.92 ± 0.16 g·cm-2·s-1 and 0.53 ± 0.16 g·cm-2·s-1, respectively, compared with snow removal treatment (0 cm snow depth), 0.11 ± 0.05 g·cm-2·s-1. In general, snow addition increased CO2 fluxes significantly. As snow depths increased, microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and bacterial diversities increased drastically. More important, the community of bacteria differed under different treatments. Firmicutes, which can resist dehydration and extremely low temperatures, was widely distributed in the snow removal treatment, where it sustained soil biochemical processes. Overall, our study indicates that snow cover counteracts the negative effects on soil microbial activities caused by low temperatures and could play a critical role in winter carbon cycling in wetlands.
