Project description:An effect of promoters such as calcium, aluminium, and potassium oxides and also addition of chromium and manganese on the structure of cobalt catalysts was examined. Studies of the catalytic ammonia decomposition over the cobalt catalysts are presented. The studies of the ammonia decomposition were carried out for various ammonia-hydrogen mixtures in which ammonia concentration varied in the range from 10% to 100%. Co(0) catalyst, promoted by oxides of aluminium, calcium, and potassium, showed the highest activity in the ammonia decomposition reaction. Contrary to expectations, it was found that chromium and manganese addition into the catalysts decreased their activity.

Project description:A series of Ni-Mg-Al hydrotalcite-derived mixed metal oxides with different Ni/Mg ratios were prepared by the coprecipitation method followed by calcination at 600 °C. The hydrotalcite-like materials, as well as their calcined forms, were characterized with respect to structure (XRD, UV-Vis DRS), chemical composition (ICP-OES), textural parameters (low-temperature N2 sorption), dispersion of nickel species (H2-chemisorption) and nickel species reducibility (H2-TPR). Moreover, the process of hydrotalcite-like materials' thermal transformation to mixed metal oxide systems in air and argon flow was studied by the TG-DTA method. The activity of the studied catalysts in the reaction of ammonia decomposition increased with an increase in nickel content in the samples. It was shown that nickel species incorporated into the Mg-Al oxide matrix segregated under conditions of reduction in a flow of H2/Ar mixture with the formation of metallic nickel crystallites of the average size of about 10 nm. The size of nickel crystallites was practically no change in the subsequent reduction cycles and resulted in increased catalytic activity in comparison to larger crystallites of metallic nickel (20.2-23.6 nm) deposited on Al2O3 and MgO.

Project description:Ammonia decomposition has attracted increasing attention as a promising process for the on-site generation of hydrogen. In this study, Ni catalysts supported on perovskite-type oxides (ABO3) were prepared and the activity for ammonia decomposition was examined. The Ni/ANbO3 (A = Na and K) and Ni/AEMnO3 (AE = Ca, Sr, and Ba) catalysts were less effective for this reaction. Meanwhile, the Ni/REAlO3 (RE = La, Sm, and Gd) catalysts exhibited relatively high activity. For Ni/AETiO3 and Ni/AEZrO3, the performance strongly depended on the A-site element of the perovskite-type oxides, and the Sr and Ba elements were more effective than the Ca one in the respective series. The catalytic activity for Ni/AEZrO3 was higher than Ni/AETiO3 in the case of the same alkaline earth element, and Ni/BaZrO3 was the most active among the samples investigated in this work. For these series, the order in the performance corresponded well with that in the basic property. The nitrogen desorption profiles revealed that the evolution of nitrogen atoms, which is one of the kinetically slow steps, effectively proceeded for Ni/SrZrO3 and Ni/BaZrO3 compared with the conventional Ni catalysts. This promotion effect would be ascribed to the strong basic properties of the SrZrO3 and BaZrO3 supports, resulting in the high activity of Ni/SrZrO3 and Ni/BaZrO3 for ammonia decomposition.

Project description:Ammonia is regarded as an energy vector for hydrogen storage, transport and utilization, which links to usage of renewable energies. However, efficient catalysts for ammonia decomposition and their underlying mechanism yet remain obscure. Here we report that atomically-dispersed Ru atoms on MgO support on its polar (111) facets {denoted as MgO(111)} show the highest rate of ammonia decomposition, as far as we are aware, than all catalysts reported in literature due to the strong metal-support interaction and efficient surface coupling reaction. We have carefully investigated the loading effect of Ru from atomic form to cluster/nanoparticle on MgO(111). Progressive increase of surface Ru concentration, correlated with increase in specific activity per metal site, clearly indicates synergistic metal sites in close proximity, akin to those bimetallic N2 complexes in solution are required for the stepwise dehydrogenation of ammonia to N2/H2, as also supported by DFT modelling. Whereas, beyond surface doping, the specific activity drops substantially upon the formation of Ru cluster/nanoparticle, which challenges the classical view of allegorically higher activity of coordinated Ru atoms in cluster form (B5 sites) than isolated sites.

Project description:Ammonia decomposition is often used as an archetypical reaction for predicting new catalytic materials and understanding the very reason of why some reactions are sensitive on material's structure. Core-shell or surface-segregated bimetallic nanoparticles expose outstanding activity for many heterogeneously catalysed reactions but the reasons remain elusive owing to the difficulties in experimentally characterizing active sites. Here by performing multiscale simulations in ammonia decomposition on various nickel loadings on platinum (111), we show that the very high activity of core-shell structures requires patches of the guest metal to create and sustain dual active sites: nickel terraces catalyse N-H bond breaking and nickel edge sites drive atomic nitrogen association. The structure sensitivity on these active catalysts depends profoundly on reaction conditions due to kinetically competing relevant elementary reaction steps. We expose a remarkable difference in active sites between transient and steady-state studies and provide insights into optimal material design.

Project description:Ammonia represents a promising liquid fuel for hydrogen storage, but its large-scale application is limited by the need for precious metal ruthenium (Ru) as catalyst. Here we report on highly efficient ammonia decomposition using novel high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalysts made of earth abundant elements. Quinary CoMoFeNiCu nanoparticles are synthesized in a single solid-solution phase with robust control over the Co/Mo atomic ratio, including those ratios considered to be immiscible according to the Co-Mo bimetallic phase diagram. These HEA nanoparticles demonstrate substantially enhanced catalytic activity and stability for ammonia decomposition, with improvement factors achieving >20 versus Ru catalysts. Catalytic activity of HEA nanoparticles is robustly tunable by varying the Co/Mo ratio, allowing for the optimization of surface property to maximize the reactivity under different reaction conditions. Our work highlights the great potential of HEAs for catalyzing chemical transformation and energy conversion reactions.

Project description:Non-noble metal-based heteroatom compounds demonstrate excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the origin of this activity, driven by structure evolution effects, remains unclear due to the lack of effective in situ/operando techniques. Herein, we employ the operando quick-scan x-ray absorption fine structure (Q-XAFS) technique coupled with in situ controlled electrochemical potential to establish a structure-activity correlation of the OER catalyst. Using Ni-Fe bimetallic phosphides as a model catalyst, operando Q-XAFS experiments reveal that the structural transformation initiates at the preferential oxidation of Fe sites over Ni sites. The in situ-generated O-Fe-P structure serves as the origin of the enhanced electrocatalytic OER activity of the catalyst, a finding supported by theoretical calculations. This work provides crucial insights into understanding the reaction mechanism of the state-of-the-art Ni-Fe-based OER electrocatalysts, thus advancing the rational design of more efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Project description:Hydrogen production from the decomposition of ammonia is considered an effective approach for addressing challenges associated with hydrogen storage and transportation. However, their relatively high energy consumption and low efficiency hinder practical multi-scenario applications. In this study, Y2O3-stabilized catalysts with Co-loaded onto porous nitrogen-doped carbon (Y2O3-Co/NC) are synthesized by pyrolysis of Y(NO3)3-modified ZIF-67 under an inert atmosphere, followed by annealing in a reducing environment. The introduction of Y2O3 enhanced the recombination and desorption of N atoms and facilitated the gradual dehydrogenation of NHx on the catalyst surface, resulting in improved catalytic activity for the thermal decomposition of ammonia. Benefitting from the electron-donating properties of Y2O3 and N-doped carbon, the optimized catalyst achieved a remarkable NH3 conversion efficiency of 92.3% at a high gas hourly space velocity of 20 000 cm3· gcat-1${\mathrm{g}}_{{\mathrm{cat}}}^{ - {\mathrm{1}}}$ ·h-1 with an encouraging H2 production rate of 20.6 mmol· gcat-1${\mathrm{g}}_{{\mathrm{cat}}}^{ - {\mathrm{1}}}$ ·min-1 at 550 °C. Moreover, the synthesized catalyst undergoes a fast-dynamic reconstruction process, resulting in exceptionally stable catalytic activity during the thermal decomposition of ammonia, rendering it a promising candidate for carbon-free energy thermocatalytic conversion technology.

Project description:Heusler alloys (X2 YZ) can be a candidate for new catalysts as well as other intermetallic compounds. We previously found good catalytic properties of Co2 FeGe for selective hydrogenation of alkynes and developed nanoparticles of Co2 FeGe supported on SiO2 . However, the average diameter of the nanoparticles was 23 nm, which is not small enough compared to those of state-of-the-art nanoparticle catalysts. In this study, we developed SiO2 -supported Co2 FeGe nanoparticles of <10 nm in diameter. A catalytic test for selective hydrogenation of propyne indicated a partial formation of sites with low selectivity including excess Co atoms. For ammonia decomposition, enhancement of turnover frequency was achieved by reducing the particle size.

Project description:High throughput experimentation has the capability to generate massive, multidimensional datasets, allowing for the discovery of novel catalytic materials. Here, we show the synthesis and catalytic screening of over 100 unique Ru-Metal-K based bimetallic catalysts for low temperature ammonia decomposition, with a Ru loading between 1-3 wt% Ru and a fixed K loading of 12 wt% K, supported on γ-Al2O3. Bimetallic catalysts containing Sc, Sr, Hf, Y, Mg, Zr, Ta, or Ca in addition to Ru were found to have excellent ammonia decomposition activity when compared to state-of-the-art catalysts in literature. Furthermore, the Ru content could be reduced to 1 wt% Ru, a factor of four decrease, with the addition of Sr, Y, Zr, or Hf, where these secondary metals have not been previously explored for ammonia decomposition. The bimetallic interactions between Ru and the secondary metal, specifically RuSrK and RuFeK, were investigated in detail to elucidate the reaction kinetics and surface properties of both high and low performing catalysts. The RuSrK catalyst had a turnover frequency of 1.78 s-1, while RuFeK had a turnover frequency of only 0.28 s-1 under identical operating conditions. Based on their apparent activation energies and number of surface sites, the RuSrK had a factor of two lower activation energy than the RuFeK, while also possessing an equivalent number of surface sites, which suggests that the Sr promotes ammonia decomposition in the presence of Ru by modifying the active sites of Ru.
