Project description:Direct laser writing has gained remarkable popularity by offering architectural control of 3D objects at submicron scales. However, it faces limitations when the fabrication of microstructures comprising multiple materials is desired. The generation processes of multi-material microstructures are often very complex, requiring meticulous alignment, as well as a series of step-and-repeat writing and development of the materials. Here, a novel material system based on multilayers of chemically tailored polymers containing anthraquinone crosslinker units is demonstrated. Upon two-photon excitation, the crosslinkers only require nearby aliphatic C,H units as reaction partners to form a crosslinked network. The desired structure can be written into a solid multi-layered material system, wherein the properties of each material can be designed at the molecular level. In this way, C,H insertion crosslinking (CHic) of the polymers within each layer, along with simultaneous reaction at their interfaces, is performed, leading to the one-step fabrication of multi-material microstructures. A multi-material 3D scaffold with a sixfold symmetry is produced to precisely control the adhesion of cells both concerning surface chemistry and topology. The demonstrated material system shows great promise for the fabrication of 3D microstructures with high precision, intricate geometries and customized functionalities.

Project description:A new 1-step method for synthesizing glass-ceramic composites consisting of rare earth phosphates (REPO4) dispersed in borosilicate glass (BG) is reported herein as an alternative to the 2-step approach that is traditionally used. The effect of annealing time and annealing temperature on the formation of the 1-step glass-ceramic composites was investigated. Backscattered electron images and energy dispersive X-ray maps were collected to observe the morphology and chemical distribution in the glass-ceramic composites. X-ray diffraction was used to study the long-range order and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy was used to study the local environment of La, Y, P and Si. All analyses showed glass-ceramic composites made by the 1 and 2-step methods were similar to each other except for the Si L2,3-edge XANES spectra, which showed a slight change between the glass-ceramic composite materials made by the different synthesis methods. Xenotime-type phosphates (YPO4) were observed to be more soluble in the borosilicate glass than the monazite-type phosphates (LaPO4). This was attributed to the difference in the field strength of the rare-earth ions as a result of the difference in the ionic radii. Glass-ceramic composites made by the 1-step method were shown to form in 1 day at 1100 °C and in 3 days at 1000 °C without a significant change in glass or ceramic composition compared to the 1-step composite synthesized at 1100 °C for 3 days.

Project description:Low-cost, vanadium-based mixed metal oxides mostly have a layered crystal structure with excellent kinetics for lithium-ion batteries, providing high energy density. The existence of multiple oxidation states and the coordination chemistry of vanadium require cost-effective, robust techniques to synthesize the scaling up of their morphology and surface properties. Hydrothermal synthesis is one of the most suitable techniques to achieve pure phase and multiple morphologies under various conditions of temperature and pressure. We attained a simple one-step hydrothermal approach to synthesize the reduced graphene oxide coated Nickel Vanadate (rGO@Ni3V2O8) composite with interconnected hollow microspheres. The self-assembly route produced microspheres, which were interconnected under hydrothermal treatment. Cyclic performance determined the initial discharge/charge capacities of 1209.76/839.85 mAh g-1 at the current density of 200 mA g-1 with a columbic efficiency of 69.42%, which improved to 99.64% after 100 cycles. High electrochemical performance was observed due to high surface area, the porous nature of the interconnected hollow microspheres, and rGO induction. These properties increased the contact area between electrode and electrolyte, the active surface of the electrodes, and enhanced electrolyte penetration, which improved Li-ion diffusivity and electronic conductivity.

Project description:Most laboratory assays take advantage of multi-step protocols to achieve high performance, but conventional paper-based tests (e.g., lateral flow tests) are generally limited to assays that can be carried out in a single fluidic step. We have developed two-dimensional paper networks (2DPNs) that use materials from lateral flow tests but reconfigure them to enable programming of multi-step reagent delivery sequences. The 2DPN uses multiple converging fluid inlets to control the arrival time of each fluid to a detection zone or reaction zone, and it requires a method to disconnect each fluid source in a corresponding timed sequence. Here, we present a method that allows programmed disconnection of fluid sources required for multi-step delivery. A 2DPN with legs of different lengths is inserted into a shared buffer well, and the dropping fluid surface disconnects each leg at in a programmable sequence. This approach could enable multi-step laboratory assays to be converted into simple point-of-care devices that have high performance yet remain easy to use.

Project description:The exploration of novel porous core-shell materials is of great significance because of their prospectively improved performance and extensive applications in separation, energy conversion, and catalysis. Here, mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) as a core generate a shell with mesoporous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) NUT-COF-1(NTU) by a covalent linking process, the composite NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@NTU keeping retentive crystallinity with hierarchical porosity well. Importantly, the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@NTU composite shows significantly enhanced catalytic conversion and selectivity during styrene oxidation. It is mainly due to the hydrophilic MOF nanocrystals readily gathering the hydrophobic reactants styrene and boosting the radical mechanism path after combining the hydrophobic COFs shell. The synthetic strategy in this systematic study develops a new rational design for the synthesis of other core-shell MOF/COF-based hybrid materials, which can expand the promising applications.

Project description:In this study, a novel graphene/Ag3PO4 quantum dot (rGO/Ag3PO4 QD) composite was successfully synthesized via a facile one-step photo-ultrasonic-assisted reduction method for the first time. The composites were analyzed by various techniques. According to the obtained results, Ag3PO4 QDs with a size of 1-4 nm were uniformly dispersed on rGO nanosheets to form rGO/Ag3PO4 QD composites. The photocatalytic activity of rGO/Ag3PO4 QD composites was evaluated by the decomposition of methylene blue (MB). Meanwhile, effects of the surfactant dosage and the amount of rGO on the photocatalytic activity were also investigated. It was found that rGO/Ag3PO4 QDs (WrGO:Wcomposite = 2.3%) composite exhibited better photocatalytic activity and stability with degrading 97.5% of MB within 5 min. The improved photocatalytic activities and stabilities were majorly related to the synergistic effect between Ag3PO4 QDs and rGO with high specific surface area, which gave rise to efficient interfacial transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes on both materials. Moreover, possible formation and photocatalytic mechanisms of rGO/Ag3PO4 QDs were proposed. The obtained rGO/Ag3PO4 QDs photocatalysts would have great potentials in sewage treatment and water splitting.

Project description:Scaling graphene from a two-dimensional (2D) ideal structure to a three-dimensional (3D) millimeter-sized architecture without compromising its remarkable electrical, optical, and thermal properties is currently a great challenge to overcome the limitations of integrating single graphene flakes into 3D devices. Herewith, highly connected and continuous nanoporous graphene (NPG) samples, with electronic and vibrational properties very similar to those of suspended graphene layers, are presented. We pinpoint the hallmarks of 2D ideal graphene scaled in these 3D porous architectures by combining the state-of-the-art spectromicroscopy and imaging techniques. The connected and bicontinuous topology, without frayed borders and edges and with low density of crystalline defects, has been unveiled via helium ion, Raman, and transmission electron microscopies down to the atomic scale. Most importantly, nanoscanning photoemission unravels a 3D NPG structure with preserved 2D electronic density of states (Dirac cone like) throughout the porous sample. Furthermore, the high spatial resolution brings to light the interrelationship between the topology and the morphology in the wrinkled and highly bent regions, where distorted sp2 C bonds, associated with sp3-like hybridization state, induce small energy gaps. This highly connected graphene structure with a 3D skeleton overcomes the limitations of small-sized individual graphene sheets and opens a new route for a plethora of applications of the 2D graphene properties in 3D devices.

Project description:Consider a study in which one observes n independent and identically distributed random variables whose probability distribution is known to be an element of a particular statistical model, and one is concerned with estimation of a particular real valued pathwise differentiable target parameter of this data probability distribution. The targeted maximum likelihood estimator (TMLE) is an asymptotically efficient substitution estimator obtained by constructing a so called least favorable parametric submodel through an initial estimator with score, at zero fluctuation of the initial estimator, that spans the efficient influence curve, and iteratively maximizing the corresponding parametric likelihood till no more updates occur, at which point the updated initial estimator solves the so called efficient influence curve equation. In this article we construct a one-dimensional universal least favorable submodel for which the TMLE only takes one step, and thereby requires minimal extra data fitting to achieve its goal of solving the efficient influence curve equation. We generalize these to universal least favorable submodels through the relevant part of the data distribution as required for targeted minimum loss-based estimation. Finally, remarkably, given a multidimensional target parameter, we develop a universal canonical one-dimensional submodel such that the one-step TMLE, only maximizing the log-likelihood over a univariate parameter, solves the multivariate efficient influence curve equation. This allows us to construct a one-step TMLE based on a one-dimensional parametric submodel through the initial estimator, that solves any multivariate desired set of estimating equations.

Project description:The main goal of our research is to develop an effective method with a wide range of applications for the statistical reconstruction of heterogeneous microstructures with compact inclusions of any shape, such as highly irregular grains. The devised approach uses multi-scale extended entropic descriptors (ED) that quantify the degree of spatial non-uniformity of configurations of finite-sized objects. This technique is an innovative development of previously elaborated entropy methods for statistical reconstruction. Here, we discuss the two-dimensional case, but this method can be generalized into three dimensions. At the first stage, the developed procedure creates a set of black synthetic clusters that serve as surrogate inclusions. The clusters have the same individual areas and interfaces as their target counterparts, but random shapes. Then, from a given number of easy-to-generate synthetic cluster configurations, we choose the one with the lowest value of the cost function defined by us using extended ED. At the second stage, we make a significant change in the standard technique of simulated annealing (SA). Instead of swapping pixels of different phases, we randomly move each of the selected synthetic clusters. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, we reconstruct and analyze two-phase microstructures with irregular inclusions of silica in rubber matrix as well as stones in cement paste. The results show that the two-stage reconstruction (TSR) method provides convincing realizations for these complex microstructures. The advantages of TSR include the ease of obtaining synthetic microstructures, very low computational costs, and satisfactory mapping in the statistical context of inclusion shapes. Finally, its simplicity should greatly facilitate independent applications.
