Project description:BackgroundSeveral studies suggest a link between micronutrients and constipation. However, the relationship between constipation and phosphorus has rarely been examined. The main aim of this study was to investigate the association between changes in the prevalence of chronic constipation and dietary phosphorus intake among adult respondents of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES).MethodsData were extracted from the NHANES database for the years 2005-2010. A total of 13,948 people were included in the analysis. Dietary information was collected using the respondents' 24-h dietary records. We conducted multiple logistic regression analyses to examine the correlation between phosphorus intake and poor bowel movement. The primary and secondary outcomes was constipation defined by stool consistency and stool frequency, respectively.ResultsFollowing multi-variate adjustment in model III, a significant association between chronic constipation and each additional 0.1-g intake of dietary phosphorus (odds ratio [OR], 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.95, 1.00; P = 0.034 for stool consistency vs. OR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.90, 0.99; P = 0.027 for stool frequency) was observed. Following multi-variate adjustment in model III, OR values and 95% CI from the second to fourth quartiles compared to the first quartile (reference group) were 0.92 (0.66, 1.27), 0.73 (0.47, 1.13), and 0.39 (0.20, 0.76), respectively, using the stool frequency definition.ConclusionsThis study revealed a negative correlation between phosphorus intake and chronic constipation. This may be due to the fact that dietary phosphorus intake is associated with softer stools and increased stool frequency. Further studies in different settings should be considered to verify these findings.
Project description:The prevalence of adolescent myopia is remarkably increasing. Previous studies have indicated that an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for myopia. However, the link between diet-related inflammation and myopia is unclear. To explore their correlation, we used dietary inflammation index (DII) that is a parameter to quantify the inflammatory potential of diet, to reveal the relationship between DII and myopia in adolescents. We extracted sociodemographic data, information of diets and eye refractive status of adolescents from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for period 1999-2008. Dietary intake data was used to calculate DII scores, which were then categorized into quartiles. Multivariable regression models and subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate the association between DII and myopia. Subsequently, smoothed curve analyses were conducted to discern the trend of correlation between DII and myopia across diverse population. A total of 7191 juveniles aged at 12 to 18 years with complete information were included in our study, consisting 3367 participants with diagnosis of myopia. Among these participants, a trend towards an increasing prevalence of myopia was observed with a higher DII. After adjusting for all covariates, stratified logistic regression analyses showed that among the population aged in 16 to 18 years old or with 9-11th grade educational level, the prevalence of myopia was significantly increased with higher DII score (OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.11, P = 0.006; OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.11, P = 0.010). In the two subgroups, participants in the highest quartile of DII had a 31.00% higher risk of myopia and a higher 27.00% risk of myopia respectively, compared to those in the lowest quartile of DII. Our results revealed an increasing trend in the prevalence of myopia with increased DII score in adolescents. Particularly, DII was positively associated with the risk of myopia among the population aged in 16 to 18 years old and with 9-11th grade educational level.
Project description:Background/aimsThe effect of physical activity on the relationship between dietary fiber intake and constipation has not been comprehensively studied. This study aims to explore the impact of physical activity.MethodsData were obtained from 3 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010 and included a total of 13 941 participants aged ≥ 20 years. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the independent association between dietary fiber and constipation. Interaction analysis was also performed to analyze the relationship between dietary fiber and constipation in different physical activity groups.ResultsAmong non-active participants, dietary fiber intake did not associate with stool consistency (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.98-1.05; P = 0.407). For physically active participants, 1-gram unit increase in dietary fiber intake reduced the risk of stool consistency by 3% (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.94-0.99; P = 0.020). Moreover, the relationship between dietary fiber intake and stool consistency was significantly different for groups with different levels of physical activity (P interaction = 0.044). However, dietary fiber intake was not related to stool frequency among non-active participants (OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.94-1.05; P = 0.767) nor physically active participants (OR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.97-1.04; P = 0.751).ConclusionsIncreasing dietary fiber intake was associated with stool consistency-related constipation among physically active participants, but not among non-active participants. However, increasing dietary fiber intake is not significantly associated with stool frequency in different physical activity groups.
Project description:Background and aimsThis study aimed to investigate the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and dyslipidemia, as well as to evaluate the mortality risk associated with DII in participants with dyslipidemia.MethodsData from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database were divided into dyslipidemia and non-dyslipidemia groups. The association between DII and dyslipidemia was investigated using the weighted chi-square test, weighted t-test, and weighted logistic regression. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for all-cause and cardiovascular disease-related mortality within the dyslipidemia group.ResultsA total of 17,820 participants, including 4,839 without and 12,981 with dyslipidemia were analyzed in this study. The results showed that DII was higher in the dyslipidemia group compared to the non-dyslipidemia group (1.42 ± 0.03 vs. 1.23 ± 0.04, P < 0.01). However, for energy, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, and iron, DII was lower in participants with dyslipidemia. Logistic regression analysis revealed a strong positive association between DII and dyslipidemia. The odds ratios for dyslipidemia from Q1 to Q4 were 1.00 (reference), 1.12 (0.96-1.31), 1.23 (1.04-1.44), and 1.33 (1.11-1.59), respectively. In participants with dyslipidemia, a high DII was associated with high all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.ConclusionDII was closely associated with dyslipidemia. A pro-inflammatory diet may play a role in unfavorable consequences and is linked to both all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death in patients with dyslipidemia. Participants with dyslipidemia should pay attention to their anti-inflammatory dietary patterns.
Project description:To clarify the effects of dietary inflammatory and pro-oxidative potential, we investigated the impact of the Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) and the Dietary Oxidative Balance Score (DOBS) on all-cause and disease-specific mortality. For DII and DOBS, 17,550 and 24,527 participants were included. Twenty-six and seventeen dietary factors were selected for scoring. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used. DII and DOBS were significantly associated with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality in this nationally representative sample of American adults. Compared with the lowest DII, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CI) of all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality for the highest were 1.49 (1.23-1.80), 1.58 (1.08-2.33), and 1.56 (1.07-2.25). The highest quartile of DOBS was associated with the risk of all-cause death (HR 0.71, 95% CI 0.59-0.86). Pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidative diets were associated with increased risk for all-cause (HR 1.59, 95% CI 1.28-1.97), and CVD (HR 2.29, 95% CI 1.33-3.94) death compared to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant diets. Similar results were observed among the stratification analyses. Inflammation-reducing and oxidative-balancing diets are linked to lower all-cause and CVD mortality. Diets impact health by regulating inflammation and oxidative stress.
Project description:BackgroundEndometriosis is a multifaceted disorder with genetic, immune, inflammatory, and multifactorial origins. Vitamin B6 serves as a pivotal coenzyme in various metabolic pathways involving lipids, hemes, nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates. Dysregulation or deficiency of vitamin B6 can perturb human physiology. However, the relationship between dietary vitamin B6 and endometriosis remains elusive. This study aims to explore how dietary intake of vitamin B6 is associated with the risk of endometriosis.MethodsUsing cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we analyzed information from American women aged 20-54 years between 1999 and 2006. After adjusting for relevant covariates, multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed to evaluate correlations.ResultsA total of 4,453 women were included in the study. The multiple linear regression model revealed a positive association between dietary vitamin B6 intake and the risk of endometriosis, even after controlling for confounding variables. Compared to individuals with lower vitamin B6 consumption (Q1: <0.94 mg/day), the adjusted odds ratio (OR) values for dietary vitamin B6 intake and endometriosis in Q2 (0.95-1.39 mg/day), Q3 (1.40-1.99 mg/day), and Q4 (>1.90 mg/day) were 1.22 (95% CI: 0.88-1.69, p = 0.23), 1.22 (95% CI: 0.86-1.73, p = 0. 279), and 1.51 (95% CI, 1.01-2. 24, p = 0.04), respectively.ConclusionOur findings suggest a positive correlation between endometriosis and dietary vitamin B6 intake. Further investigations are imperative to establish a causal relationship between dietary vitamin B6 intake and endometriosis.
Project description:BackgroundMetabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) contributes to the cardiometabolic diseases through multiple mechanisms. Fatty liver index (FLI) has been formulated as a non-invasive, convenient, and cost-effective approach to estimate the degree of MASLD. The current study aims to evaluate the correlation between FLI and the prevalent cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), and to assess the usefulness of FLI to improve the detection of the prevalent CMM in the general population.Methods26,269 subjects were enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018. FLI was formulated based on triglycerides, body mass index, γ -glutamyltransferase, and waist circumference. CMM was defined as a history of 2 or more of diabetes mellitus, stroke, myocardial infarction.ResultsThe prevalence of CMM was 10.84%. With adjustment of demographic, anthropometric, laboratory, and medical history covariates, each standard deviation of FLI leaded to a 58.8% risk increase for the prevalent CMM. The fourth quartile of FLI had a 2.424 times risk for the prevalent CMM than the first quartile, and a trend towards higher risk was observed. Smooth curve fitting showed that the risk for prevalent CMM increased proportionally along with the elevation of FLI. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the correlation was robust in several conventional subpopulations. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed an incremental value of FLI for detecting prevalent CMM when adding it to conventional cardiometabolic risk factors (Area under the curve: 0.920 vs. 0.983, P < 0.001). Results from reclassification analysis confirmed the improvement from FLI.ConclusionOur study demonstrated a positive, linear, and robust correlation between FLI and the prevalent CMM, and our findings implicate the potential usefulness of FLI to improve the detection of prevalent CMM in the general population.
Project description:BackgroundThe impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on constipation, as mediated through gastrointestinal absorption and perturbations to the intestinal microecology, remains poorly understood.ObjectiveThis study seeks to explain the relationship between PFAS and constipation.MethodsA total of 2945 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010 were included in this study. Constipation was defined using the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) based on stool consistency. The relationship between PFAS and constipation was evaluated using weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, while adjusting for confounding variables.ResultsThe weighted median concentration of total PFAS (ΣPFAS) was significantly lower in individuals with constipation (19.01 μg/L) compared to those without constipation (23.30 μg/L) (p < 0.0001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the cumulative effect of PFAS was more pronounced in the elderly, men, individuals with obesity, high school education or equivalent, and high-income individuals (p < 0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, multivariable analysis demonstrated an inverse association between PFOA [OR (95% CI), 0.666(0.486,0.914)] and PFHxS [OR (95% CI), 0.699(0.482,1.015)], and constipation. None of the personal and lifestyle factors showed a significant correlation with this negative association, as confirmed by subgroup analysis and interaction testing (p for interaction > 0.05). The RCS analysis demonstrated a linear inverse relationship between PFAS levels and constipation.ConclusionThe findings of this study provide evidence of a significant inverse correlation between serum concentrations of PFAS, particularly PFOA and PFHxS, and constipation.
Project description:BackgroundStudies have shown that there is a relationship between smoke exposure and constipation. However, there are limited data on the associations between constipation and smoking or serum cotinine levels, a metabolite of nicotine commonly used as a marker of tobacco exposure.MethodsThis study thoroughly examined the cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2010. We applied multivariate logistic regression models to assess the association between tobacco smoking status, serum cotinine levels, and constipation.ResultsIn this cross-sectional study, 11,651 participants were included. The average age of the participants was 48.8 ± 17.9 years. After controlling for covariates, there was no significant relationship between serum cotinine levels, smoking status, and constipation risk. According to the categorical analysis, the incidence of constipation was 36% higher in participants with serum cotinine levels between 0.05 and 2.99 ng/mL (model 1: OR = 1.45 [1.13-1.85]; model 2: OR = 1.44 [1.12-1.83]; and model 3: OR = 1.36 [1.06-1.74]; p < 0.05) after adjusting for covariates by using the lowest levels of serum cotinine (<0.05 ng/mL) as a reference. In the non-smokers, serum cotinine levels were linearly and positively associated with the risk of constipation (p > 0.05), and the relationship between smoke exposure and constipation remained relatively stable in across all subgroups.ConclusionThe study suggests that serum cotinine levels have a promoting effect on stool frequency-related constipation in non-smokers. Therefore, avoiding passive smoking as much as possible may reduce the effect of smoke exposure on constipation and serve as a preventive measure for treatment.
Project description:PurposeChronic low-grade systemic inflammation affects muscle protein metabolism. The dietary inflammatory index (DII®) is a tool designed to assess the inflammatory potential of the diet. The available data on the association between DII and sarcopenia are limited. We aimed to investigate the association of the DII with components of sarcopenia in individuals over 50 years of age.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002 dataset. Body composition was measured, and isokinetic strength of the knee extensors (peak force) was evaluated. Low muscle mass and strength were defined using sex-specific thresholds. Energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™) scores were calculated using 24-h dietary recall data. Regression models were fit to evaluate the association between E-DII scores and low muscle mass and low muscle strength, alone and combined.ResultsMean age of study participants was 62.1 ± 9.5 years, and 138 participants (7.4%) belonged to the combination group of low muscle mass and low muscle strength. In multivariable-adjusted regression models, higher E-DII score was associated with lower appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) (β = - 0.03, P < 0.001, P trend <0.001), and lower peak force (β = -2.15, P = 0.04, P trend = 0.01) and higher likelihood for these components combined (OR = 1.12, 95% CI 1.01-1.25, P = 0.03).ConclusionHigher E-DII score is associated with lower muscle mass and muscle strength, and increased likelihood for the combination of low muscle mass and low muscle strength in older adults. This has important implications for healthy aging.
