Most oxidative damage on mitochondrial DNA is corrected by the base excision repair (BER) pathway. However, the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting reaction─deoxyribose phosphate (dRP) removal─in the multienzymatic reaction pathway has not been completely determined in mitochondria.
