The dissipative Talbot soliton fiber laser.

ABSTRACT: Talbot effect, characterized by the replication of a periodic optical field in a specific plane, is governed by diffraction and dispersion in the spatial and temporal domains, respectively. In mode-locked lasers, Talbot effect is rarely linked with soliton dynamics since the longitudinal mode spacing and cavity dispersion are far away from the self-imaging condition. We report switchable breathing and stable dissipative Talbot solitons in a multicolor mode-locked fiber laser by manipulating the frequency difference of neighboring spectra. The temporal Talbot effect dominates the laser emission state-in the breathing state when the integer self-imaging distance deviates from the cavity length and in the steady state when it equals the cavity length. A refined Talbot theory including dispersion and nonlinearity is proposed to accurately depict this evolution behavior. These findings pave an effective way to control the operation in dissipative optical systems and open branches in the study of nonlinear physics.

Passively harmonic dissipative soliton generation in normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser using SMS fiber as artificial saturable absorber.

Project description:Passively harmonic mode-locking has been experimentally demonstrated in an erbium-doped fiber laser with large normal dispersion using single-multi-single mode structure as artificial saturable absorber. By increasing the pump power under the same polarization setting, the mode-locking operation can switch from fundamental mode-locked to 5th order harmonic mode-locked. Highest repetition rate of 4.26 MHz (5th order harmonic) is observed, with pulse width and pulse energy ascertained at 290 fs and 3.0 nJ, respectively. Excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of above 50 dB is observed for all harmonic orders. The findings validated that SMS structure can be used to generate stable and switchable high order of harmonic mode-locked. The low-cost SMS fiber for harmonic mode-locked generation technique could lay the groundwork for future sustainable industrial growth.

Energy-managed soliton fiber laser.

Project description:Ultrafast fiber lasers constitute a flexible platform to investigate new solitary wave concepts. To surpass the low energy limitation of the conventional solitons generated in standard telecom fibers, successive breakthroughs have promoted the usage of an important frequency chirping within fiber oscillators. This lead to original solitary wave regimes such as stretched-pulse, all-normal-dispersion, and self-similar dynamics. We here revisit ultrafast fiber lasers built from standard optical fibers featuring solely anomalous dispersion. We propose a new cavity design enhancing key dissipative effects with contained frequency chirping and demonstrate the generation of high energy pulses in the few-picoseconds regime. The involved intracavity dynamics blends conventional and dissipative soliton features in an unseen way with low- and high-energy propagation regions, allowing an increased flexibility and novel scalability prospects.

Stabilized 30 µJ dissipative soliton resonance laser source at 1064 nm.

Project description:We demonstrate the first successful stabilization of a dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) mode-locked (ML) laser source using straightforward techniques. Our setup employed a figure-8 (F8) resonator configuration and a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) to achieve stable mode-locking, generating 1064 nm rectangular pulses with a 3 ns duration at a repetition frequency of ~ 1 MHz. The pulses were boosted in an all-fiber amplifier chain and reached 30 µJ and 10 kW peak power per pulse at 30 W average output power. We addressed a critical gap in the literature by actively stabilizing key DSR pulse parameters: average output power (improved by a factor of 51), pulse repetition frequency (improved by 7583 using cross-phase modulation for synchronization), and pulse duration (improved by a factor of ~ 4). Additionally, we included a numerical analysis to explore the pulse formation mechanisms in DSR ML lasers working in a F8 configuration. Our findings show that non-complex all-in-fiber DSR ML lasers can reliably produce high-energy pulses with stable, repeatable parameters, making them suitable for future applications e.g. in nonlinear frequency conversion, laser micromachining, or LIDAR.

Dissipative soliton generation and real-time dynamics in microresonator-filtered fiber lasers.

Project description:Optical frequency combs in microresonators (microcombs) have a wide range of applications in science and technology, due to its compact size and access to considerably larger comb spacing. Despite recent successes, the problems of self-starting, high mode efficiency as well as high output power have not been fully addressed for conventional soliton microcombs. Recent demonstration of laser cavity soliton microcombs by nesting a microresonator into a fiber cavity, shows great potential to solve the problems. Here we study the dissipative soliton generation and interaction dynamics in a microresonator-filtered fiber laser in both theory and experiment. We bring theoretical insight into the mode-locking principle, discuss the parameters effect on soliton properties, and provide experimental guidelines for broadband soliton generation. We predict chirped bright dissipative soliton with flat-top spectral envelope in microresonators with normal dispersion, which is fundamentally forbidden for the externally driven case. Furthermore, we experimentally achieve soliton microcombs with large bandwidth of ~10 nm and high mode efficiency of 90.7%. Finally, by taking advantage of an ultrahigh-speed time magnifier, we study the real-time soliton formation and interaction dynamics and experimentally observe soliton Newton's cradle. Our study will benefit the design of the novel, high-efficiency and self-starting microcombs for real-world applications.

Intracavity incoherent supercontinuum dynamics and rogue waves in a broadband dissipative soliton laser.

Project description:Understanding dynamical complexity is one of the most important challenges in science. Significant progress has recently been made in optics through the study of dissipative soliton laser systems, where dynamics are governed by a complex balance between nonlinearity, dispersion, and energy exchange. A particularly complex regime of such systems is associated with noise-like pulse multiscale instabilities, where sub-picosecond pulses with random characteristics evolve chaotically underneath a much longer envelope. However, although observed for decades in experiments, the physics of this regime remains poorly understood, especially for highly-nonlinear cavities generating broadband spectra. Here, we address this question directly with a combined numerical and experimental study that reveals the physical origin of instability as nonlinear soliton dynamics and supercontinuum turbulence. Real-time characterisation reveals intracavity extreme events satisfying statistical rogue wave criteria, and both real-time and time-averaged measurements are in quantitative agreement with modelling.

Developing high energy dissipative soliton fiber lasers at 2 micron.

Project description:While the recent discovered new mode-locking mechanism--dissipative soliton--has successfully improved the pulse energy of 1 μm and 1.5 μm fiber lasers to tens of nanojoules, it is still hard to scale the pulse energy at 2 μm due to the anomalous dispersion of the gain fiber. After analyzing the intracavity pulse dynamics, we propose that the gain fiber should be condensed to short lengths in order to generate high energy pulse at 2 μm. Numerical simulation predicts the existence of stable 2 μm dissipative soliton solutions with pulse energy over 10 nJ, comparable to that achieved in the 1 μm and 1.5 μm regimes. Experimental operation confirms the validity of the proposal. These results will advance our understanding of mode-locked fiber lasers at different wavelengths and lay an important step in achieving high energy ultrafast laser pulses from anomalous dispersion gain media.

Characterization and compression of dissipative-soliton-resonance pulses in fiber lasers.

Project description:We report numerical and experimental studies of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) in a fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. The DSR pulse presents temporally a flat-top profile and a clamped peak power. Its spectrum has a rectangle profile with characteristic steep edges. It shows a unique behavior as pulse energy increases: The rectangle part of the spectrum is unchanged while the newly emerging spectrum sits on the center part and forms a peak. Experimental observations match well with the numerical results. Moreover, the detailed evolution of the DSR pulse compression is both numerically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. An experimentally obtained DSR pulse of 63 ps duration is compressed down to 760 fs, with low-intensity pedestals using a grating pair. Before being compressed to its narrowest width, the pulse firstly evolves into a cat-ear profile, and the corresponding autocorrelation trace shows a crown shape, which distinguishes itself from properties of other solitons formed in fiber lasers.

Synchronized multi-wavelength soliton fiber laser via intracavity group delay modulation.

Project description:Locking of longitudinal modes in laser cavities is the common path to generate ultrashort pulses. In traditional multi-wavelength mode-locked lasers, the group velocities rely on lasing wavelengths due to the chromatic dispersion, yielding multiple trains of independently evolved pulses. Here, we show that mode-locked solitons at different wavelengths can be synchronized inside the cavity by engineering the intracavity group delay with a programmable pulse shaper. Frequency-resolved measurements fully retrieve the fine temporal structure of pulses, validating the direct generation of synchronized ultrafast lasers from two to five wavelengths with sub-pulse repetition-rate up to ~1.26 THz. Simulation results well reproduce and interpret the key experimental phenomena, and indicate that the saturable absorption effect automatically synchronize multi-wavelength solitons in despite of the small residual group delay difference. These results demonstrate an effective approach to create synchronized complex-structure solitons, and offer an effective platform to study the evolution dynamics of nonlinear wavepackets.

Soliton bursts and deterministic dissipative Kerr soliton generation in auxiliary-assisted microcavities.

Project description:Dissipative Kerr solitons in resonant frequency combs offer a promising route for ultrafast mode-locking, precision spectroscopy and time-frequency standards. The dynamics for the dissipative soliton generation, however, are intrinsically intertwined with thermal nonlinearities, limiting the soliton generation parameter map and statistical success probabilities of the solitary state. Here, via use of an auxiliary laser heating approach to suppress thermal dragging dynamics in dissipative soliton comb formation, we demonstrate stable Kerr soliton singlet formation and soliton bursts. First, we access a new soliton existence range with an inverse-sloped Kerr soliton evolution-diminishing soliton energy with increasing pump detuning. Second, we achieve deterministic transitions from Turing-like comb patterns directly into the dissipative Kerr soliton singlet pulse bypassing the chaotic states. This is achieved by avoiding subcomb overlaps at lower pump power, with near-identical singlet soliton comb generation over twenty instances. Third, with the red-detuned pump entrance route enabled, we uncover unique spontaneous soliton bursts in the direct formation of low-noise optical frequency combs from continuum background noise. The burst dynamics are due to the rapid entry and mutual attraction of the pump laser into the cavity mode, aided by the auxiliary laser and matching well with our numerical simulations. Enabled by the auxiliary-assisted frequency comb dynamics, we demonstrate an application of automatic soliton comb recovery and long-term stabilization against strong external perturbations. Our findings hold potential to expand the parameter space for ultrafast nonlinear dynamics and precision optical frequency comb stabilization.
