Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards Kawasaki disease from caregivers of children with Kawasaki disease: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Purpose

To examine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of caregivers of children with Kawasaki disease toward Kawasaki disease.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted at four hospitals in China from March 2023 to June 2023. The KAP scores were evaluated using a self-designed questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.840; KMO = 0.7381). Correlations between dimension scores were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the relationships among factors.

Results

Of 643 surveyed, 49.50% were male caregivers. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 7.12 ± 2.34 (possible range, 0-11), 29.23 ± 5.67 (possible range, 12-60), and 21.57 ± 5.34 (possible range, 6-30). Knowledge correlated with attitude (r = 0.172, P < 0.001) and practice (r = 0.280, P < 0.001). Attitude was significantly related to practice (r = 0.598, P < 0.001). SEM showed knowledge had a positive effect on attitudes (β = 0.581, P < 0.001) and practices (β = 0.786, P < 0.001). In addition, attitudes also positively affected practices (β = 0.554, P < 0.001). Occupation type (β = 0.598, P = 0.025) and monthly per capita income (β=-0.750, P = 0.020) had different effects on attitudes, while monthly per capita income also had negative effects on practices (β=-0.410, P = 0.021).

Conclusion

Caregivers of children with Kawasaki disease have moderate knowledge and unfavorable attitudes but proactive practices toward this disease. The results could help design an educational intervention to improve KAP, which could translate into better patient management and outcomes.

Project description:IntroductionDental practice experienced two important evolutions: the development of the concept of evidence-based dentistry (EBD) and the changes in the relationship between dentists and patients. Thus, the practitioner is invited nowadays to give a treatment that reflects the best available evidence.The purpose of this study is to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices of dentists toward the concept of EBD.MethodsThis is a cross sectional study that was conducted among dentists in public and private sector in Morocco. A self-administered questionnaire with 27 questions was delivered to practitioners. The comparison was carried out using the Khi2 test or Fisher's exact test, t-test or the Mann-Whitney. Logistic regression was performed to assess factors associated with the application of EBD. Linear regression was also performed to identify factors that impact knowledge, attitude and practice score.ResultsA total of 209 responses was received. 58% of the participants were in the private sector, and 32.7% were academics. The main reported obstacles were the lack of time 44% and lack of training on critical appraisal 60.3%. Knowledge of PICO question formulation and previous EBD training was significantly related to the implementation of EBD in multivariate analysis in logistic regression (OR = 8.163- CI95%: 2.095-31.80 and OR = 12.79- CI95%: 2.868-57 respectively). The total score of surveyed dentists was affected by the knowledge of PICO question formulation and the knowledge of relevant information sources (PubMed/Medline, the Cochrane library) (β = 3.04- CI95%: 0.411-5.66, β = 6.29- CI95%: 2.92-9.66 and β = 8.35- CI95%: 5.89-10.81 respectively).ConclusionBased on the findings of this study, application of EBD was associated with knowledge of PICO question formulation and previous EBD training. The lack of time was the most common obstacles identified by the participants applying EBD. Therefore, EBD educational programs should be developed for dental practitioners to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Project description:BackgroundHerbal medicines, derived from medicinal plants, are among the most popular alternative remedies around the globe. In Saudi Arabia, herbal medicines are extensively used by public as part of the culture as well as religious norms. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding herbal medicines among the general population in Saudi Arabia.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional survey study was conducted on the general population of Jeddah city with the help of a validated and self-administered questionnaire. Sample size was calculated to be 450 with subjects between 20 and 60 years of either gender. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed using SPSS.ResultsResults of our data showed that 173 (42.2%) of the total participants used herbal medicines, however, significant association was found between female gender and the usage of herbal medicines (p < 0.001). Approximately, more than half (56.0%) of the respondents agreed that herbal medicines could be used to promote health and treat illnesses, and 45% respondents agreed that herbal medicines are safe. 153 (37.4%) of the participants opined that herbal medicines could be taken with conventional or allopathic medicine. The data also showed a significant (p < 0.05) association between knowledge about the source of herbal medicine and gender where females were found to have more knowledge compared to males. Moreover, a significantly higher number of chronic disease patients were using herbal medicines compared to individuals with no medical problems (p < 0.001). Strikingly, majority (n = 204; 49.9%) of the respondents used herbal medicines as a first choice when sick, while a good number (n = 172; 42.1%) of respondents did not consult doctors before taking herbal medicines.ConclusionThe use of herbal medicines is common among the general population of Jeddah. Although most of the participants believed that the herbal medicines are safe and do not require consultation, there is a dire need to increase awareness as well as to establish effective strategies to evaluate the safety, efficacy and quality of the herbal medicines for propitious consequences of this commonly used entity in the local society.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has become a significant challenge to humanity, especially marginalized groups such as indigenous people. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards COVID-19 prevention among the indigenous population in Lipis district, Pahang, Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the indigenous population and the data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a validated questionnaire. The mean score of knowledge, attitude, and practice were 2.35 (SD 1.104), 32.84 (SD 4.756), and 9.64 (SD 3.227), respectively. In the bivariable analysis, the younger the age (p < 0.001), and the higher the education level (p = 0.001) of the participants, the higher the knowledge score on COVID-19. Meanwhile, the female participants (p = 0.043) and the higher the household income, the higher the attitude score of the participants (p = 0.006). Factors that contributed to a higher score of practice towards COVID-19 prevention were younger age (p = 0.013), female (p < 0.001), no religion (p = 0.026), unemployed (p < 0.001), and higher household income (p = 0.012). There was a positive correlation between knowledge score and practice score (p = 0.001) and a positive correlation between attitude score and practice score (p < 0.001), respectively. Multivariable regression analysis showed that the younger age (p < 0.001) was significantly associated with a higher knowledge score. Furthermore, female (p = 0.018), unemployed (p = 0.001), higher knowledge score (p < 0.001), and higher attitude score (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a higher score of practice towards COVID-19 prevention among the participants, respectively. Indigenous people in Malaysia have a good knowledge, attitude, and practice towards COVID-19. However, strategic planning and programmes related to preventive practices against infectious disease outbreaks need to be conducted continuously to reduce the outbreaks in the future.
