Project description:Eco-friendly and cost-effective catalysts with multiple active sites, large surface area, high stability and catalytic activity are highly desired for efficient water splitting as a sustainable green energy source. Within this line, a facile synthetic approach based on solventless thermolysis was employed for the simple and tunable synthesis of Ni1-xMgxFe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanosheets. The characterization of nanosheets (via p-XRD, EDX, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and SAED) revealed that the pristine ferrites (NiFe2O4 and MgFe2O4), and their solid solutions maintain the same cubic symmetry throughout the composition regulation. Elucidation of the electrochemical performance of the nanoferrite solid solutions showed that by tuning the local chemical environment of Ni in NiFe2O4 via Mg substitution, the intrinsic catalytic activity was enhanced. Evidently, the optimized Ni0.4Mg0.6Fe2O4 catalyst showed drastically enhanced HER activity with a much lower overpotential of 121 mV compared to the pristine NiFe2O4 catalyst. Moreover, Ni0.2Mg0.8Fe2O4 catalyst exhibited the best OER performance with a low overpotential of 284 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH. This enhanced electrocatalytic activity could be due to improved electronic conductivity caused by the partial substitution of Ni2+ by Mg2+ in the NiFe2O4 matrix as well as the synergistic effect in the Mg-substituted NiFe2O4. Our results suggest a feasible route for developing earth-abundant metal oxide-based electrocatalysts for future water electrolysis applications.

Project description:This paper reports the synthesis of composite track-etched membranes (TeMs) modified with electrolessly deposited copper microtubules using copper deposition baths based on environmentally friendly and non-toxic reducing agents (ascorbic acid (Asc), glyoxylic acid (Gly), and dimethylamine borane (DMAB)), and comparative testing of their lead(II) ion removal capacity via batch adsorption experiments. The structure and composition of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. The optimal conditions for copper electroless plating were determined. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicates that adsorption is controlled by the chemisorption process. A comparative study was conducted on the applicability of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models to define the equilibrium isotherms and the isotherm constants for the prepared composite TeMs. Based on the regression coefficients R2, it has been shown that the Freundlich model better describes the experimental data of the composite TeMs on the adsorption of lead(II) ions.

Project description:Superabsorbents starches (SASs) were synthesized and characterized starting from native corn starch, bitter cassava and sweet cassava by graft copolymerization with itaconic acid. Additionally, their swelling behavior was studied both in water and in buffer solutions with different pHs and saline solutions. Their applicability was tested as environmentally friendly fertilizers in the absorption and release of urea, potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate at different concentrations of fertilizers. The values of swelling at the equilibrium (H∞) in water and different media of the graft copolymers demonstrated their superabsorbent capacity, polyelectrolyte behavior, and smart response to environmental stimuli. The percentage of fertilizer absorbed and released from the SASs was a function of the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium. The loading and release of SASs were depended on the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium as well as the nature, structure, and morphology of the starch used.

Project description:Controlled-release and slow-release fertilizers can effectively supply nitrogen (N) while mitigating N loss. To determine the suitability of these fertilizers for plants in semi-arid environments, these fertilizers need to be evaluated under varying placement and temperature conditions. Several urea fertilizers were evaluated, including: uncoated, sulfur-coated (SCU), polymer-coated-sulfur-coated (PCSCU), and polymer-coated (PCU) with projected release timings between 45 and 180 d. Nitrogen release was measured under daily fluctuating or static temperatures applied either to the surface or buried in the soil. A second experiment consisted of two PCU sources and added a hanging bag placement comparison and low and high soil moisture treatments. For the first Experiment, the N in uncoated urea released shortly after application. The SCU and PCSCU treatments released > 80% of the N before the first sampling date. With fluctuating temperatures, the PCU 45, 75, 120, and 180 incorporated into the soil released N within +9, +9, -22, and -68 d of their expected timing. However, they released their N within 35 d when surface applied. Conversely, with static temperatures, PCU products released slowly, releasing under 80% for the entire study. The second experiment verified these results and showed no difference between low and high moisture and minimal release with fertilizer not in contact with soil. Each coated fertilizer in these studies exhibited slow/control release properties, but the PCU (surface applied) and SCU/PCSCU (surface applied or incorporated in soil) release was much more rapid than expected. Our research suggests that, although the SCU and PCSCU showed minimal slow-release properties (regardless of placement), the PCU fertilizers incorporated in the soil do have a controlled release approximate to what is expected, but have a much more rapid release when surface applied.

Project description:Chemical reagents used in traditional mineral processing can be toxic and hazardous for the environment. Therefore, the use of biotechnological methods is becoming increasingly important. Great hopes are being placed in the use of microorganisms for bio-beneficiation of raw materials. However, assessment of adhesion abilities of bacteria onto minerals surface as well as biosorption of metals are essential steps before designing final process of each ore beneficiation. The main aim of this work was an investigation of biosorption of Cd and Mg, as well as adhesion abilities of five microorganism species with minerals included in the natural mixture of phosphate ore form Djebel Onk, Algeria. The ore, due to its unique composition, created conditions for adhesion of all five tested microbial strains onto apatite surface during incubation at pH 3. Moreover, Rhodococcus erythropolis CD 130, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Escherichia coli adhered distinctly onto apatite surface during incubation at pH 7. Incubation lasting 20 min at pH 4-6 created the most favorable conditions for biosorption of metals by B. subtilis and adhesion of cells. In case of C. albicans, biosorption of metals as well as adhesion of cells onto the mineral surface were more effective after longer time and in a wider pH range.

Project description:Supramolecular oleogels, in which low-molecular weight oleogelators self-assemble into various nanostructures through non-covalent interactions, have witnessed increasing research activity in various fields of science, including food, cosmetics or remediation of marine oil spills. Herein, we report a simple scalable and environmentally friendly carbohydrate-based oleogelator, namely, the sodium salt of N,N'-dimethyl β-C glucosyl barbiturate (GlcBMe) that self-assembles through sonication to induce the gelation of polar organic solvent and later of non-polar vegetable oils by cationic exchange with quaternary ammonium surfactants. Water-soluble GlcBMe was capable of forming self-assembled fibrillar network bridging insoluble particles in the oil by sonication in the presence of a small amount of water. The rheological properties are reinforced by in situ particle bridging with quaternary ammonium surfactants as evidenced by multi-scale structural analyses. IR analysis indicated that -OH (from carbohydrates) and -C[double bond, length as m-dash]O (from barbituric ring) were involved in hydrogen bonding promoting the formation of a fibrous network. The oleogel presented a non-Newtonian system showing a shear-thinning behavior and thixotropic properties. Advantageously, these oleogels showed excellent control and slow release of the loaded-vitamin E in a pH-dependent manner.

Project description:Alpha-cellulose, a unique, natural, and essential polymer for the fiber industry, was isolated in an ecofriendly manner using eleven novel systems comprising recycling, defibrillation, and delignification of prosenchyma cells (vessels and fibers) of ten lignocellulosic resources. Seven hardwood species were selected, namely Conocorpus erectus, Leucaena leucocephala, Simmondsia chinensis, Azadirachta indica, Moringa perigrina, Calotropis procera, and Ceiba pentandra. Moreover, three recycled cellulosic wastes were chosen due to their high levels of accumulation annually in the fibrous wastes of Saudi Arabia, namely recycled writing papers (RWPs), recycled newspapers (RNPs), and recycled cardboard (RC). Each of the parent samples and the resultant alpha-cellulose was characterized physically, chemically, and anatomically. The properties examined differed significantly among the ten resources studied, and their mean values lies within the cited ranges. Among the seven tree species, L. leucocephala was the best cellulosic precursor due to its higher fiber yield (55.46%) and holocellulose content (70.82%) with the lowest content of Klasson lignin (18.86%). Moreover, RWP was the best α-cellulose precursor, exhibiting the highest holocellulose (87%) and the lowest lignin (2%) content. Despite the high content of ash and other additives accompanied with the three lignocellulosic wastes that were added upon fabrication to enhance their quality (10%, 11%, and 14.52% for RWP, RNP, and RC, respectively), they can be considered as an inexhaustible treasure source for cellulose production due to the ease and efficiency of discarding their ash minerals using the novel CaCO3-elimination process along with the other innovative techniques. Besides its main role for adjusting the pH of the delignification process, citric acid serves as an effective and environmentally friendly additive enhancing lignin breakdown while preserving cellulose integrity. Comparing the thermal behavior of the ten cellulosic resources, C. procera and C. pentandra exhibited the highest moisture content and void volume as well as having the lowest specific gravity, crystallinity index, and holocellulose content and were found to yield the highest mass loss during their thermal degradation based on thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis in an inert atmosphere. However, the other resources used were found to yield lower mass losses. The obtained results indicate that using the innovative procedures of recycling, defibrillation, and delignification did not alter or distort either the yield or structure of the isolated α-cellulose. This is a clear indicator of their high efficiency for isolating cellulose from lignocellulosic precursors.

Project description:The valorization of inorganic silica components from rice husk has been considered an important research topic over the last few decades. However, owing to various problems, such as the difficulty in controlling precise morphological properties, complex extraction and manufacturing processes, and the use of hazardous acids, the technology for producing high value-added silica for industrial applications is still insufficient. In this study, we developed a method for obtaining size-controlled spherical silica from rice husk using an eco-friendly and simplified process that overcomes the above-mentioned limitations. Silica particles were obtained by extraction from rice husk in alkaline media under mild conditions (80 °C) followed by pH adjustment with acetic acid. Therefore, the use of strong acids was excluded, no special equipment was required for the process, and the overall synthetic process was significantly simplified. The silica particles obtained through this method were uniformly spherical in shape, with a surface area of more than 200 m2 g-1. Our results indicate that the preparation of silicate solution under appropriate conditions and the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) additives during the precipitation step are important for obtaining spherical silica. Moreover, by adjusting the temperature in the precipitation step, the size of the spherical silica particles can be controlled in the range of ∼250 nm to ∼1.4 μm. Our study contributes to the development of rice husk-derived silica that can be applied to practical industrial applications.
