Epidemiology of Knee Injuries in Baseball Players from the State of Sao Paulo.

ABSTRACT: Objective This study aimed to identify the main knee complaints and injuries associated with baseball and their prevalence in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods This epidemiological study analyzed data from an online questionnaire sent to baseball athletes from the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from 2019 to 2022. Results Ninety-eight athletes participated in the study. Their average age was 24.3 years, and 85.72% of the subjects were men. The most prevalent ethnicities were yellow (50%) and white (42.86%). Most athletes had incomplete or complete higher education (75.5%). Most (88.77%) have been training for over 1 year, and 40.82% played in more than 1 position. More than half also practiced another sport. Most (66.32%) athletes present knee complaints or symptoms, and 37.75% had suffered a knee injury playing baseball, with several mechanisms (contact with the ground, contact with another player, or no contact). More than half (59.45%) of the athletes required time away from baseball due to complaints, symptoms, or injuries. Conclusion Among the athletes interviewed, 66.32% had a knee complaint, and 37.75% had already had a knee injury, especially meniscal and ligament injuries. The injury rate was highest in the first year of practice.

Project description:BackgroundThere is growing concern among sports medicine professionals regarding the increasing prevalence of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery in baseball players. At this time, it is unclear whether collegiate head baseball coaches possess adequate knowledge of UCL injuries.Purpose/hypothesisThe purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge and perceptions of UCL injury among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) head baseball coaches. It was hypothesized that NCAA head baseball coaches would demonstrate misconceptions and knowledge disparities regarding UCL injury.Study designCross-sectional study.MethodsAn online 35-question survey was designed to assess NCAA head baseball coaches' knowledge of UCL injury. The survey included questions related to participant characteristics, UCL injury, biometric performance and pitching variables, throwing fatigue, surgical variables/performance outcomes, and collegiate athlete recruitment. A total of 788 NCAA head baseball coaches were asked to participate. Responses were analyzed and reported using descriptive statistics where appropriate. Statistical comparisons and contrasts were made using chi-square and Fisher exact tests.ResultsA total of 103 NCAA head baseball coaches participated in the survey, representing a 13.1% response rate. Only 31% of respondents could correctly identify all UCL injury symptoms, and 93% recommended <8 weeks off from overhead throwing during the off-season. Previous elbow injury observation was associated with UCL symptom identification (χ2 = 10.614; P = .005). Regular access to an athletic trainer (P = .015) and regular access to a strength and conditioning coach (P = .004) were both associated with NCAA division status, with Division I programs having the most access. Neither sports medicine physician (P = .656) nor athletic trainer (P = .611) access was associated with the geographic location of the baseball program; however, strength and conditioning coach access was associated with geographic location (χ2 = 6.696; P = .010).ConclusionThis study demonstrates that limited UCL injury knowledge and various misconceptions exist among NCAA baseball head coaches. The majority of responding coaches recommended an amount of time off from overhead throwing during the off-season that may be inadequate and were unable to identify all symptoms associated with UCL injury, representing the most concerning findings of the present study.

Project description:Roadkill estimates for different species and species groups are available for many countries and regions. However, there is a lack of information from tropical countries, including from Latin America. In this study, we analyzed medium and large-sized mammal roadkill data from 18 toll road companies (TRC) in São Paulo State (6,580 km of monitored toll roads), Brazil. We extrapolated these roadkill numbers to the entire system of major paved roads in the State (36,503 km). The TRC collected mammal-road- mortality data both before (2-lanes) and after (4-lanes) road reconstruction. We used the "before" data from the TRC to estimate annual mammal-road-mortality along 2-lane roads that remained public roads. Combined with the data for the new 4-lane highways, this allowed us to estimate annual mammal road mortality for all the paved roads in the State. During 10 years of roadkill monitoring along toll roads, a total of 37,744 roadkilled mammals were recorded, representing a total of 32 medium to large-sized mammal species (average number of roadkilled individuals/year = 3,774 ± 1,159; min = 1,932; max = 5,369; 0.6 individuals roadkilled/km/year). Most roadkilled species were common generalists, but there were also relatively high roadkill numbers of threatened and endangered species (4.3% of the data), which is a serious conservation concern. Most of the roadkill was reported occurred during the nocturnal period (66%, n = 14,189) and in the rainy months (October-March) (55%, n = 15,318). Reported mammal roadkill tended to increase between 2009 and 2014 (R2 = 0.614; p = 0.065), with an average increase of 313.5 individuals/year. Extrapolation of the results to the entire São Paulo State, resulted in an average estimate of 39,605 medium and large-sized mammals roadkilled per year. Our estimates of the number of roadkilled individuals can be used as one of the input parameters in population viability analyses to understand the extinction or extirpation risk, especially for threatened and endangered species.
