Project description:Water pollution caused by the highly toxic metal hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) creates significant human health and ecological risks. In this study, a novel adsorbent was used to treat Cr(VI)-containing wastewater; the adsorbent was prepared using red mud (RM) generated from the alumina production industry and the rare earth element lanthanum. This study explored adsorption performance, kinetics, and mechanisms. Results showed that the adsorption kinetics of the RM modified by lanthanum (La-RM), followed the pseudo-second-order model, with a rapid adsorption rate. Cr(VI) adsorption was positively associated with the absorbent dose, pH, temperature, and initial Cr(VI) concentration; coexisting anions had little impact. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was 17.35 mg/g. Cr(VI) adsorption on La-RM was a mono-layer adsorption pattern, following the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic parameters showed the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on La-RM occurred as a result of LaOCl formation on the RM surface, which in turn further reacted with Cr(VI) in the wastewater. This study highlighted a method for converting industrial waste into a valuable material for wastewater treatment. The novel absorbent could be used as a potential adsorbent for treating Cr(VI)-contaminating wastewater, due to its cost-effectiveness and high adsorption capability.

Project description:This study aims to investigate the adsorption behavior of a strong polyelectrolyte poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) onto alumina particles. Adsorption of PSS onto positively charged alumina surface increased with increasing ionic strength, indicating that non-electrostatic and electrostatic interaction controlled the adsorption. The removal of an emerging antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CFX) from water environment using PSS-modified alumina (PMA) was also studied. The removal of CFX using PMA was much higher than that using alumina particles without PSS modification in all pH ranges of 2-11. The removal of CFX reached 98% under the optimum conditions of pH 6, contact time of 120 min, adsorbent dosage of five milligrams per milliliter and ionic strength 104-M NaCl. The adsorption isotherms of CFX at different salt concentrations fit well with a two-step adsorption model, while the adsorption kinetic fit well with a pseudo-second-order model with a good correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9969). The CFX-removal from a hospital wastewater using PMA was more than 75%. Our study demonstrates that adsorption of PSS onto alumina to modify the particle surface is important to form a novel adsorbent PMA for CFX-removal from water environments.

Project description:Herein, we report the results of a study on combining adsorption and ultrafiltration in a single-stage process to remove nitrite ions from contaminated water. As adsorbent, a surface-modified nanoclay was employed (i.e., Nanomer® I.28E, containing 25-30 wt. % trimethyl stearyl ammonium). Ultrafiltration experiments were conducted using porous polymeric membranes (Ultracel® 10 kDa). The hybrid process of adsorption-ultrafiltration was modeled and optimized using three computational tools: (1) response surface methodology (RSM), (2) artificial neural network (ANN), and (3) support vector machine (SVM). The optimal conditions provided by machine learning (SVM) were found to be the best, revealing a rejection efficiency of 86.3% and an initial flux of permeate of 185 LMH for a moderate dose of the nanoclay (0.674% w/v). Likewise, a new and more retentive membrane (based on PVDF-HFP copolymer and halloysite (HS) inorganic nanotubes) was produced by the phase-inversion method, characterized by SEM, EDX, AFM, and FTIR techniques, and then tested under optimal conditions. This new composite membrane (PVDF-HFP/HS) with a thickness of 112 μm and a porosity of 75.32% unveiled an enhanced rejection efficiency (95.0%) and a lower initial flux of permeate (28 LMH). Moreover, molecular docking simulations disclosed the intermolecular interactions between nitrite ions and the functional moiety of the organonanoclay.

Project description:Thiosemicarbazide-modified cellulose (MTC) has been studied for removing heavy metals in the water source or for extracting some precious metals. The conditions of synthesis of MTC and Cu(II) removal were optimized by single-variable analysis through oxidation-reduction on titration and photometry. The results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and thermogravimetric analyses show that MTC exists in the thioketone form with a high surface area and heat durability. The Cu(II) removal was of pseudo-second order and the isotherm equation correlated best with the Langmuir equation. MTC has the maximum capacity of adsorption, which is q m = 106.3829 mg g-1. Furthermore, MTC can be regenerated without the loss of adsorption efficiency after ten cycles of adsorption and desorption.

Project description:Biochars were produced with magnesium chloride as an additive for the sorption of hexavalent chromium dissolved in water using five types of straw (from taro, corn, cassava, Chinese fir, and banana) and one type of shell (Camellia oleifera) as the raw materials. The removal of hexavalent chromium by the six biochars mainly occurred within 60 min and then gradually stabilized. The kinetics of the adsorption process were second order, the Langmuir model was followed, and the adsorption of Cr(VI) by the six biochars was characterized by Langmuir monolayer chemisorption on a heterogeneous surface. Banana straw biochar (BSB) had the best performance, which perhaps benefitted from its special structure and best adsorption effect on Cr(VI), and the theoretical adsorption capacity was calculated as 125.00 mg/g. For the mechanism analysis, Mg-loaded biochars were characterized before and after adsorption by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The adsorption mechanism differed from the adsorption process of conventional magnetic biochar, and biochar interactions with Cr(VI) were controlled mainly by electrostatic attraction, complexation, and functional group bonding. In summary, the six Mg-loaded biochars exhibit great potential advantages in removing Cr(VI) from wastewater and have promising potential for practical use, especially BSB, which shows super-high adsorption performance.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently recognized as unique platforms for environmental studies. This study evaluated the potential of nine MOFs from ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and UIO-66 families for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a toxic, bio-accumulative, and persistent fluoroquinolone antibiotic. ZIF-67-SO4, with a rhombic crystalline morphology and 1375 m2/g BET surface area, has the highest CIP adsorption efficiency among the studied MOFs. The mathematical sorption model predicted that the highest CIP removal (99.2%) occurs when adsorbent dose, pH, and agitation time are adjusted to 6.82, 832.4 mg/L, and 39.95 min, respectively. Further studies revealed that the CIP adsorbed onto ZIF-67-SO4 in monolayer (qmax: 2537.5 mg/g) and chemisorption controlled the rate of the process. Mass transfer kinetic coefficients improved significantly by sonication at 35 KHz in comparison with mechanical agitation. Thermodynamic parameters (minus signs of ?G° [7.8 to 14.2], positive signs of ?H° (58.9 KJ/mol), and ?S° (0.23 KJ/mol·K)) demonstrated the spontaneous, endothermic, and chemical sorption of CIP. The level of cobalt leached from ZIF-67-SO4 structure varied 1.2-4.5 mg/L, depending on pH, mixing time, and agitation type. In conclusion, the excellent adsorption properties of ZIF-67-SO4 for CIP, made it an outstanding candidate for environmental protection purposes.

Project description:P,P-bis (2-oxooxazolidin-3-yl)-N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)phosphinic amide (APTES-BOP)-modified SBA-15 (SBA-15-BOP) was prepared by a post-synthesis grafting method for the removal of anionic azo dyes from aqueous solutions. The properties of the prepared adsorbent were characterized by PXRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, nitrogen sorption, and elemental analysis. Adsorption equilibrium and adsorption kinetic studies demonstrated that the experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. According to Langmuir fitting, SBA-15-BOP showed high adsorption capacity for CR and RR2 dyes, with the maximum adsorption capacities of 518.1 mg g-1 and 253.8 mg g-1, respectively. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption processes of CR and RR2 dyes on SBA-15-BOP were spontaneous and exothermal. The prepared SBA-15-BOP can be a promising adsorbent for the removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Project description:In the present study, a nanocomposite adsorbent based on mesoporous silica nanotubes (MSNTs) loaded with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES@MSNTs) was synthesized. The nanocomposite was employed as an effective adsorbent for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics from aqueous media. It has an 848.80 mg/g maximal TC adsorption capability. The structure and properties of 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent were detected by TEM, XRD, SEM, FTIR, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The later analysis suggested that the 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent has abundant surface functional groups, effective pore size distribution, a larger pore volume, and a relatively higher surface area. Furthermore, the influence of key adsorption parameters, including ambient temperature, ionic strength, initial TC concentration, contact time, initial pH, coexisting ions, and adsorbent dosage, had also been investigated. The 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent's ability to adsorb the TC molecules was found to be more compatible with Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Moreover, research on temperature profiles pointed to the process' endothermic character. In combination with the characterization findings, it was logically concluded that the 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent's primary adsorption processes involved interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction, and the pore-fling effect. The synthesized 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent has an interestingly high recyclability of >84.6 percent up to the fifth cycle. The 3-APTES@MSNT nanoadsorbent, therefore, showed promise for TC removal and environmental cleanup.

Project description:The current research focuses on the adsorption/desorption characteristics of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and trimethoprim (TRI) taking place in 17 agricultural soils, which are studied by means of batch-type experiments. The results show that adsorption was higher for CIP, with Freundlich KF values ranging between 1150 and 5086 Ln µmol1-n kg-1, while they were between 29 and 110 Ln µmol1-n kg-1 in the case of TRI. Other parameters, such as the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (qm(ads)), as well as the Kd parameter in the linear model and also the adsorption percentages, follow the same trend as KF. Desorption was lower for CIP (with KF(des) values in the range 1089-6234 Ln µmol1-n kg-1) than for TRI (with KF(des) ranging between 26 and 138 Ln µmol1-n kg-1). The higher irreversibility of CIP adsorption was also confirmed by its lower nF(des)/nF(ads) ratios, compared to TRI. Regarding soil characteristics, it was evidenced that nitrogen and carbon contents, as well as mineral fractions, had the highest influence on the adsorption/desorption process. These results can be considered relevant as regards the fate of both antibiotics when they reach the environment as pollutants and therefore could be considered in assessment procedures focused on environmental and public health aspects.
