Project description:The development of biodegradable packing materials is a global priority due to the huge volumes of plastic refuse entering landfills and the environment. In this study, a series of biodegradable nanocomposite films based on poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and reinforced with an organophilic layered double hydroxide (OLDH) were scale-up fabricated. The OLDH nanosheets with a basal spacing of 4.07 nm were presynthesized on a large-scale by solvent-free high-energy ball milling. All of the PBAT/OLDH nanocomposite films (0.5-4 wt % OLDH) showed a uniform dispersion of OLDH nanosheets in the PBAT matrix. A PBAT/OLDH film containing 1 wt % OLDH (denoted herein as OLDH-1) demonstrated outstanding thermal, optical, mechanical, and water vapor barrier properties compared with a pure PBAT film (OLDH-0), including a 37% reduction in haze and a 41.9% increase in nominal tensile strain at break dramatically. Furthermore, the food packaging measurement revealed that the OLDH-1 film showed a better packaging effect than the pure PBAT film and commercial polyethylene packing materials. The feasibility of scale-up manufacture and the excellent processability, manufacturing scalability, mechanical performance, optical transparency, water vapor barrier properties, and food packaging performance of the PBAT/OLDH nanocomposite films encourage their future application as biodegradable packaging films.

Project description:This study deals with the fabrication of biodegradable porous materials from bacterial polyester, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P3HB3HHx), via thermally induced phase separation. P3HB3HHx monoliths with topological porous structure were prepared by dissolution of P3HB3HHx in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 85 °C and subsequent quenching. The microstructure of the resulting P3HB3HHx monoliths was changed by the P3HB3HHx concentration of the polymer solution. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscope analysis revealed that the P3HB3HHx monoliths crystallized during phase separation and the subsequent aging. The mechanical properties, such as compression modulus and stress, of the monoliths depended on the 3-hydroxyhexanoate content of P3HB3HHx. Furthermore, the P3HB3HHx monolith absorbed linseed oil in preference to water in a plant oil⁻water mixture. In combination with the biodegradable character of P3HB3HHx, the present study is expected to contribute to the development of bio-based materials.

Project description:The rapidly advancing technology of wearable and miniaturized electronics has increased the demand for low-cost high-performance flexible sensors. Herein, the preparation of translucent freestanding films consisting of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple spray coating method is presented. The obtained nanocomposite films were thin (~10 µm) and flexible. The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis revealed that the nanocomposite film was composed of regions of ZnO NP-modified CNFs and regions of aggregation of ZnO NPs with each other. The electrical conductance of the films was rapidly increased beyond 40 wt.% ZnO and reached up to >50 nA at 60 wt.% ZnO. This was attributed to the increased number of conductive paths formed by the ZnO NPs in the nanocomposite film when a certain threshold was crossed. The ZnO-CNF nanocomposite film exhibited a stable response over on/off cycles of UV light exposure. The responsivity and sensitivity of the nanocomposite film with 60 wt.% ZnO were 36.5 mA/W and 247, respectively. Even when the device was curved (radius of curvature: 3 mm), the response and sensitivity remained high. The developed nanocomposite films are expected to be applied as environmentally friendly flexible UV sensors.

Project description:In the present study, a new poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx)] terpolyester with approximately 68 mol% of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB), 17 mol% of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV), and 15 mol% of 3-hydroxyhexanoate (3HHx) was obtained via the mixed microbial culture (MMC) technology using fruit pulps as feedstock, a processing by-product of the juice industry. After extraction and purification performed in a single step, the P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) powder was melt-mixed, for the first time, in contents of 10, 25, and 50 wt% with commercial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). Thereafter, the resultant doughs were thermo-compressed to obtain highly miscible films with good optical properties, which can be of interest in rigid and semirigid organic recyclable food packaging applications. The results showed that the developed blends exhibited a progressively lower melting enthalpy with increasing the incorporation of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx), but retained the PHB crystalline morphology, albeit with an inferred lower crystalline density. Moreover, all the melt-mixed blends were thermally stable up to nearly 240 °C. As the content of terpolymer increased in the blends, the mechanical response of their films showed a brittle-to-ductile transition. On the other hand, the permeabilities to water vapor, oxygen, and, more notably, limonene were seen to increase. On the overall, this study demonstrates the value of using industrial biowaste derived P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolyesters as potentially cost-effective and sustainable plasticizing additives to balance the physical properties of organic recyclable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-based food packaging materials.

Project description:In this work, a new eco-friendly method for the treatment of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) as a candidate for food packaging applications is proposed. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) was modified by bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BC) using a melt compounding technique and by plasma treatment or zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle plasma coating for better properties and antibacterial activity. Plasma treatment preserved the thermal stability, crystallinity and melting behavior of PHB‒BC nanocomposites, regardless of the amount of BC nanofibers. However, a remarkable increase of stiffness and strength and an increase of the antibacterial activity were noted. After the plasma treatment, the storage modulus of PHB having 2 wt % BC increases by 19% at room temperature and by 43% at 100 °C. The tensile strength increases as well by 21%. In addition, plasma treatment also inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by 44% and 63%, respectively. The ZnO plasma coating led to important changes in the thermal and mechanical behavior of PHB‒BC nanocomposite as well as in the surface structure and morphology. Strong chemical bonding of the metal nanoparticles on PHB surface following ZnO plasma coating was highlighted by infrared spectroscopy. Moreover, the presence of a continuous layer of self-aggregated ZnO nanoparticles was demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy, ZnO plasma treatment completely inhibiting growth of Staphylococcus aureus. A plasma-treated PHB‒BC nanocomposite is proposed as a green solution for the food packaging industry.

Project description:Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB-co-HHx)] and poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB-co-HV-co-HHx)] demonstrate interesting mechanical and thermal properties as well as excellent biocompatibility, making them suitable for multiple applications and notably biomedical purposes. The production of such polymers was described in Rhodospirillum rubrum, a purple nonsulfur bacteria in a nutrient-lacking environment where the HHx synthesis is triggered by the presence of hexanoate in the medium. However, the production of P(HB-co-HHx) under nutrient-balanced growth conditions in R. rubrum has not been described so far, and the assimilation of hexanoate is poorly documented. In this study, we used proteomic analysis and a mutant fitness assay to demonstrate that hexanoate assimilation involve β-oxidation and the ethylmalonyl-coenzyme A (CoA) (EMC) and methylbutanoyl-CoA (MBC) pathways, both being anaplerotic pathways already described in R. rubrum. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production is likely to involve the de novo fatty acid synthesis pathway. Concerning the polymer composition, HB is the main component of the polymer, probably as acetyl-CoA and butyryl-CoA are intermediates of hexanoate assimilation pathways. When no essential nutrient is lacking in the medium, the synthesis of PHA seems to help maintain the redox balance of the cell. In this framework, we showed that the fixation of CO2 is required to sustain the growth. An increase in the proportion of HHx in the polymer was observed when redox stress was engendered in the cell under bicarbonate-limiting growth conditions. The addition of isoleucine or valerate in the medium also increased the HHx content of the polymer and allowed the production of a terpolymer of P(HB-co-HV-co-HHx). IMPORTANCE The use of purple bacteria, which can assimilate volatile fatty acids, for biotechnological applications has increased, since they reduce the production costs of added-value compounds such as PHA. P(HB-co-HHx) and P(HB-co-HV-co-HHx) have demonstrated interesting properties, notably for biomedical applications. In a nutrient-lacking environment, R. rubrum is known to synthesize such polymers when hexanoate is used as the carbon source. However, their production in R. rubrum in non-nutrient-lacking growth conditions has not been described so far, and the assimilation of hexanoate is poorly documented. As the carbon source and its assimilation directly impact the polymer composition, we studied under non-nutrient-lacking growth conditions the assimilation pathway of hexanoate and PHA production in R. rubrum. Proteomic analysis and mutant fitness assays allowed us to explain PHA production and composition. An increase in HHx content of the polymer and production of P(HB-co-HV-co-HHx) was possible using the knowledge gained on metabolism under hexanoate growth conditions.

Project description:Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) films were prepared using a cast film technique. Dioxane was chosen over other polymer solvents as it resulted in homogenous films with better morphology. Several plasticizers with different molecular weights and concentrations were added to the biopolymer solution prior to casting. Thermal, crystalline, and permeability properties were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and both water vapor and oxygen transmission rate analysis. In general, the addition of plasticizers decreased the glass transition temperature (Tg), cold crystallization temperatures (Tcc), melting temperatures, as well as crystallinity degrees and increased the crystallite sizes and water vapor and oxygen transmission rates. The use of isosorbide and low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) lowered the Tg around 30 °C at the highest used concentration, also being the most effective in increasing the crystallite size. When considering isosorbide and low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as very good plasticizers for PHBH, the question of which plasticizer to use strongly relies on the desired PHBH application.

Project description:Microplastics are fragmented pieces of plastic in marine environments, and have become a serious environmental issue. However, the dynamics of the biodegradation of plastic in marine environments have not yet been elucidated in detail. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable polymers that are synthesized by a wide range of microorganisms. One of the PHA derivatives, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) has flexible material properties and a low melting temperature. After an incubation in seawater samples, a significant amount of biofilms were observed on the surfaces of PHBH films, and some PHBH films were mostly or partially degraded. In the biofilms that formed on the surfaces of unbroken PHBH films, the most dominant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) showed high similarity with the genus Glaciecola in the family Alteromonadaceae. On the other hand, the dominant OTUs in the biofilms that formed on the surfaces of broken PHBH films were assigned to the families Rhodobacteraceae, Rhodospirillaceae, and Oceanospirillaceae, and the genus Glaciecola mostly disappeared. The bacterial community in the biofilms on PHBH films was assumed to have dynamically changed according to the progression of degradation. Approximately 50 colonies were isolated from the biofilm samples that formed on the PHBH films and their PHBH-degrading activities were assessed. Two out of three PHBH-degrading isolates showed high similarities to Glaciecola lipolytica and Aestuariibacter halophilus in the family Alteromonadaceae. These results suggest that bacterial strains belonging to the family Alteromonadaceae function as the principal PHBH-degrading bacteria in these biofilms.

Project description:The global turn from the linear to the circular economy imposes changes in common activities such as food packaging. The use of biodegradable materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, natural raw materials such as clays, and food byproducts such as chitosan to develop novel food packaging films attracts the interest of industrial and institutional research centers. In this study, novel hybrid nanostructures were synthesized via the growth of zinc oxide nanorods on the surface of two nanoclays. The obtained nanostructures were incorporated with chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite either as nanoreinforcement or as an active agent to develop packaging films. The developed films were characterized via XRD, FTIR, mechanical, water-vapor diffusion, water sorption, and oxygen permeability measurements. Antimicrobial activity measurements were carried out against four different pathogen microorganisms. XRD indicated the formation of an intercalated nanocomposite structure for both types of nanoclays. Furthermore, improved tensile, water/oxygen barrier, and antimicrobial properties were recorded for all films compared to the pure chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol film. Overall, the results indicated that the use of the bio-based developed films led to an extension of food shelf life and could be used as novel active food packaging materials. Among them, the most promising film was the 6% wt. ZnO@halloysite.
