Unmasking the coronavirus pandemic impact on students' academic performance (University of Cape Coast-Ghana).

ABSTRACT: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted various institutions significantly, including education. Although several studies have explored the transmission of the COVID-19 virus among humans health, few have investigated its impact on tertiary education in Ghana. This study, therefore, aimed to unmask the effects of COVID-19 on the academic performance of tertiary students in Ghana, specifically at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Stratified and convenience sampling techniques were employed to select respondents from the College of Health and Allied Sciences at UCC for this study. Based on Krejcie and Morgan's table for determining sample sizes for a large population in a study, a sample size of 531 was studied. Questionnaires were created and distributed to respondents from various departments to solicit their views. COVID-19 has significantly affected the academic performance of students at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. A strong positive correlation was found between the positive impact of COVID-19 and academic performance (β = 3.385, p < 0.001). The study identified the absence of group discussions, poor internet networks, and other factors hurting students' academic performance (β = -2.308, p < 0.001). Resources such as libraries, conducive environments in halls and hostels, and other factors also significantly influenced students' academic performance (β = 2.941, p < 0.005). The study's findings suggest that virtual learning platforms, adequate learning infrastructures, and internet packages should be available to students to facilitate teaching and learning as the University prepares for future pandemics.

Project description:BackgroundSleep disorders are composed of a group of diseases of increasing prevalence and with social-health implications to be considered a public health problem. Sleep habits and specific sleep behaviors have an influence on the academic success of students. However, the characteristics of sleep and sleep habits of university students as predictors of poor academic performance have been scarcely analyzed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate sleep habits and their influence on academic performance in a cohort of Nursing Degree students.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional and observational study. An anonymous and self-administered questionnaire was used, including different scales such as the 'Morningness and Eveningness scale', an author-generated sleep habit questionnaire, and certain variables aimed at studying the socio-familial and academic aspects of the Nursing students. The association of sleep habits and other variables with poor academic performance was investigated by logistic regression. The internal consistency and homogeneity of the 'sleep habits questionnaire' was assessed with the Cronbach's alpha test.ResultsOverall, 401 students (mean age of 22.1 ± 4.9 years, 74.8 % females) from the Nursing Degree were included. The homogeneity of the 'sleep habits questionnaire' was appropriate (Cronbach's alpha = 0.710). Nursing students were characterized by an evening chronotype (20.2 %) and a short sleep pattern. 30.4 % of the Nursing students had bad sleep habits. Regarding the academic performance, 47.9 % of the students showed a poor one. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, a short sleep pattern (adjusted OR = 1.53, 95 % CI 1.01-2.34), bad sleep habits (aOR = 1.76, 95 % CI 1.11-2.79), and age < 25 years (aOR = 2.27, 95 % CI 1.30-3.98) were independently associated with a higher probability of poor academic performance.ConclusionsAlmost 1/3 of the Nursing students were identified as having bad sleep habits, and these students were characterized by an evening chronotype and a short sleep pattern. A short sleep pattern, bad sleep habits, and age < 25 years, were independently associated with a higher risk of poor academic performance. This requires multifactorial approaches and the involvement of all the associated actors: teachers, academic institutions, health institutions, and the people in charge in university residences, among others.

Project description:BackgroundUniversities are increasingly recognised as institutions where health and wellbeing can be promoted to maximise academic outcomes, career transitions, and lifelong positive health behaviours. There is concern about the mental health of university students and other factors which affect academic outcomes particularly for subgroups such as international students. There are few cohort studies of the breadth of issues that can impact on mental health and academic outcomes for both local and international students. We conducted a baseline prevalence survey of students at a large Australian university covering health, academic, and social determinants of wellbeing. The purpose was to inform the university's new student health and wellbeing framework with a view to follow-up to determine predictors of mental ill-health and academic outcomes in the subsequent year. In this paper we present the baseline prevalence data and report on selected mental health and health care access issues for local and international students.MethodsThe entire university population as of April 2019 of over 56,375 students aged 18 or above were invited to complete the online survey. Questions explored eight domains: demographic characteristics, general health and wellbeing, mental health, risk taking behaviours, psychosocial stressors, learning and academic factors, social and cultural environment, and awareness of and access to health and wellbeing services. Records of academic results were also accessed and matched with survey data for a large subset of students providing consent.ResultsFourteen thousand eight hundred eighty (26.4%) students commenced our survey and were representative of the entire student population on demographic characteristics. Three quarters were aged between 18 to 25 years and one third were international students. Eighty-five percent consented to access of their academic records. Similar proportions of local and international students experienced symptoms of a depression or anxiety disorder, however international students were less aware of and less likely to access available health services both inside and external to the university. We also reported on the prevalence of: general lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, amount of daily sleep); risk-taking behaviours (including alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; unprotected sexual activity); psychosocial stressors (financial, intimate partner violence, discrimination, academic stressors, acculturative stress); subjects failed; resilience; social supports; social media use; and health services accessed online.ConclusionsThis rigorous and comprehensive examination of the health status of local and international students in an Australian university student population establishes the prevalence of mental health issues and other psychosocial determinants of health and wellbeing, along with academic performance. This study will inform a university-wide student wellbeing framework to guide health and wellbeing promotion and is a baseline for a 12-month follow-up of the cohort in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:BackgroundDysmenorrhea is the most common gynecological problem among students. The disease affects students' academic performance, although studies carried out in Ethiopia primarily focused on the prevalence aspects rather than the impacts of dysmenorrhea on academic performance and its associated factors. Therefore, this study focused on the prevalence of the impact of dysmenorrhea on academic performance and its associated factors among undergraduate female students of Haramaya University in eastern Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was conducted from February to March 2020. A multistage random sampling technique was applied and a total of 356 students were included in the study. To select students, simple random sampling was used and the sample size was proportionally allocated with respect to the total number of each selected department. A semi-structured and a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire were used. The descriptive result was presented as a proportion whereas the analytic part was presented with an adjusted odds ratio.ResultThe prevalence of the impact of dysmenorrhea on academic performance was 266 [(74.7%):95%CI (70.0, 79.5%)]. Premenstrual syndrome [AOR = 4.86:95%CI (2.13, 11.06)], early menarche [AOR = 4.89:95%CI (2.03, 11.77)], moderate/severe dysmenorrhea pain intensity [AOR = 8.53:95%CI (4.45, 16.39)], and students monthly pocket money <150ETB [AOR = 3.91:95%CI (1.48, 10.29)] were significantly associated with the occurrence of the impact of dysmenorrhea on academic performance. The most common impacts were difficulty in studying followed by loss of concentration in the class.Conclusion and recommendationThere was a high prevalence of impact of dysmenorrhea on academic performance among undergraduate female students of the Haramaya University. Awareness should be created among Haramaya university authorities and teachers about the academic performance impact of premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea pain intensity to provide psychological and academic guidance, and managing mechanisms for the affected students. Haramaya University should also establish medical care for the affected students.
