Interface Engineering of Water-Dispersible Near-Infrared-Emitting CuInZnS/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots.

ABSTRACT: We report the synthesis of near-infrared (IR)-emitting core/shell/shell quantum dots of CuInZnS/ZnSe/ZnS and their phase transfer to water. The intermediate ZnSe shell was added to inhibit the migration of ions from the standard ZnS shell into the emitting core, which often leads to a blue shift in the emission profile. By engineering the interface between the core and terminal shell layer, the optical properties can be controlled, and emission was maintained in the near-IR region, making the materials attractive for biological applications. In addition, the hydrodynamic diameter of the particle was controlled using amphiphilic polymers.

Near-Infrared Light-Emitting Diodes Based on RoHS-Compliant InAs/ZnSe Colloidal Quantum Dots.

Project description:We demonstrate efficient, stable, and fully RoHS-compliant near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on InAs/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) synthesized by employing a commercially available amino-As precursor. They have a record external quantum efficiency of 5.5% at 947 nm and an operational lifetime of ∼32 h before reaching 50% of their initial luminance. Our findings offer a new solution for developing RoHS-compliant light-emitting technologies based on Pb-free colloidal QDs.

Electrochemiluminescence energy transfer-promoted ultrasensitive immunoassay using near-infrared-emitting CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots and gold nanorods.

Project description:The marriage of energy transfer with electrochemiluminescence has produced a new technology named electrochemiluminescence energy transfer (ECL-ET), which can realize effective and sensitive detection of biomolecules. To obtain optimal ECL-ET efficiency, perfect energy overlapped donor/acceptor pair is of great importance. Herein, we present a sensitive ECL-ET based immunosensor for the detection of tumor markers, using energy tunable CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS double shell quantum dots (QDs) and gold nanorods (GNRs) as the donor and acceptor, respectively. Firstly a facile microwave-assisted strategy for the synthesis of green- to near-infrared-emitting CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS QDs with time- and component-tunable photoluminescence was proposed. And, on the basis of the adjustable optical properties of both CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS QDs and GNRs, excellent overlap between donor emission and acceptor absorption can be obtained to ensure effective ECL-ET quenching, thus improving the sensing sensitivity. This method represents a novel approach for versatile detection of biomolecules at low concentrations.

Highly Luminescent Water-Dispersible NIR-Emitting Wurtzite CuInS<sub>2</sub>/ZnS Core/Shell Colloidal Quantum Dots.

Project description:Copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots (QDs) are attractive as labels for biomedical imaging, since they have large absorption coefficients across a broad spectral range, size- and composition-tunable photoluminescence from the visible to the near-infrared, and low toxicity. However, the application of NIR-emitting CIS QDs is still hindered by large size and shape dispersions and low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). In this work, we develop an efficient pathway to synthesize highly luminescent NIR-emitting wurtzite CIS/ZnS QDs, starting from template Cu2-x S nanocrystals (NCs), which are converted by topotactic partial Cu+ for In3+ exchange into CIS NCs. These NCs are subsequently used as cores for the overgrowth of ZnS shells (≤1 nm thick). The CIS/ZnS core/shell QDs exhibit PL tunability from the first to the second NIR window (750-1100 nm), with PLQYs ranging from 75% (at 820 nm) to 25% (at 1050 nm), and can be readily transferred to water upon exchange of the native ligands for mercaptoundecanoic acid. The resulting water-dispersible CIS/ZnS QDs possess good colloidal stability over at least 6 months and PLQYs ranging from 39% (at 820 nm) to 6% (at 1050 nm). These PLQYs are superior to those of commonly available water-soluble NIR-fluorophores (dyes and QDs), making the hydrophilic CIS/ZnS QDs developed in this work promising candidates for further application as NIR emitters in bioimaging. The hydrophobic CIS/ZnS QDs obtained immediately after the ZnS shelling are also attractive as fluorophores in luminescent solar concentrators.

A toolkit for bioimaging using near-infrared AgInS<sub>2</sub>/ZnS quantum dots.

Project description:Presented are a set of procedures to produce water-soluble AgInS2/ZnS near-infrared emitting quantum dots for use as biological imaging agents. The known difficulty of producing near-infrared core/shell materials is resolved by overcoating the AgInS2 cores at a low temperature using highly reactive precursors. Several methods are explored to impart water solubility of the hydrophobic as-prepared materials. Insofar as achieving aqueous dispersion of quantum dots has only limited biological utility, several methods to further functionalize them are examined. In vivo studies are conducted using these quantum dots to demonstrate the ability to model delivery of nanoparticles to the tumour microenvironment.

Hybrid graphene/cadmium-free ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots phototransistors for UV detection.

Project description:Graphene-based optoelectronic devices have attracted much attention due to their broadband photon responsivity and fast response time. However, the performance of such graphene-based photodetectors is greatly limited by weak light absorption and low responsivity induced by the gapless nature of graphene. Here, we achieved a high responsivity above 103 AW-1 for Ultraviolet (UV) light in a hybrid structure based phototransistor, which consists of CVD-grown monolayer graphene and ZnSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. The photodetectors exhibit a selective photo responsivity for the UV light with the wavelength of 405 nm, confirming the main light absorption from QDs. The photo-generated charges have been found to transfer from QDs to graphene channel, leading to a gate-tunable photo responsivity with the maximum value obtained at V G about 15V. A recirculate 100 times behavior with a good stability of 21 days is demonstrated for our devices and another flexible graphene/QDs based photoconductors have been found to be functional after 1000 bending cycles. Such UV photodetectors based on graphene decorated with cadmium-free ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots offer a new way to build environmental friendly optoelectronics.

Ultrafast Charge Carrier Dynamics in InP/ZnSe/ZnS Core/Shell/Shell Quantum Dots.

Project description:The excellent performance of InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots (CSS-QDs) in light-emitting diodes benefits from the introduction of a ZnSe midshell. Understanding the changes of ultrafast carrier dynamics caused by the ZnSe midshell is important for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, we have compared the ultrafast carrier dynamics in CSS-QDs and InP/ZnS core/shell QDs (CS-QDs) using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show that the ZnSe midshell intensifies the electron delocalization and prolongs the in-band relaxation time of electrons from 238 fs to 350 fs, and that of holes from hundreds of femtoseconds to 1.6 ps. We also found that the trapping time caused by deep defects increased from 25.6 ps to 76 ps, and there were significantly reduced defect emissions in CSS-QDs. Moreover, the ZnSe midshell leads to a significantly increased density of higher-energy hole states above the valence band-edge, which may reduce the probability of Auger recombination caused by the positive trion. This work enhances our understanding of the excellent performance of the CSS-QDs applied to light-emitting diodes, and is likely to be helpful for the further optimization and design of optoelectronic devices based on the CSS-QDs.

Charge Injection and Energy Transfer of Surface-Engineered InP/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots.

Project description:Surface passivation is a critical aspect of preventing surface oxidation and improving the emission properties of nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs). Recent studies have demonstrated the critical role of surface ligands in determining the performance of QD-based light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs). Herein, the underlying mechanism by which the capping ligands of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs influence the brightness and lifetime of the QD-LEDs is investigated. The electrochemical results demonstrate that highly luminescent InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs exhibit modulated charge injection depending on the length of the surface ligand chains: short alkyl chains on the ligands are favorable for charge transport to the QDs. In addition, the correlation between the spectroscopic and XRD analyses suggests that the length of the ligand chain tunes the ligand-ligand coupling strength, thereby controlling the inter-QD energy transfer dynamics. The present findings shed new light on the crucial role of surface ligands for InP/ZnSe/ZnS QD-LED applications.

pH-sensitive Photoluminescence of CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots in Human Ovarian Cancer Cells.

Project description:The photoluminescence of mercaptoacetic acid (MAA)-capped CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) in SKOV-3 human ovarian cancer cells is pH-dependent, suggesting applications in which QDs serve as intracellular pH sensors. In both fixed and living cells the fluorescence intensity of intracellular MAA-capped QDs (MAA QDs) increases monotonically with increasing pH. The electrophoretic mobility of MAA QDs also increases with pH, indicating an association between surface charging and fluorescence emission. MAA dissociates from the ZnS outer shell at low pH, resulting in aggregation and loss of solubility, and this may also contribute to the MAA QD fluorescence changes observed in the intracellular environment.

ZnSe/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots with Superior Optical Properties through Thermodynamic Shell Growth.

Project description:Epitaxial growth of a protective semiconductor shell on a colloidal quantum dot (QD) core is the key strategy for achieving high fluorescence quantum efficiency and essential stability for optoelectronic applications and biotagging with emissive QDs. Herein we investigate the effect of shell growth rate on the structure and optical properties in blue-emitting ZnSe/ZnS QDs with narrow emission line width. Tuning the precursor reactivity modifies the growth mode of ZnS shells on ZnSe cores transforming from kinetic (fast) to thermodynamic (slow) growth regimes. In the thermodynamic growth regime, enhanced fluorescence quantum yields and reduced on-off blinking are achieved. This high performance is ascribed to the effective avoidance of traps at the interface between the core and the shell, which are detrimental to the emission properties. Our study points to a general strategy to obtain high-quality core/shell QDs with enhanced optical properties through controlled reactivity yielding shell growth in the thermodynamic limit.

Double-Shelled InP/ZnMnS/ZnS Quantum Dots for Light-Emitting Devices.

Project description:Traditionally, ZnS or ZnSe is chosen as the shell material for InP quantum dots (QDs). However, for green or blue InP QDs, the ZnSe shell will form a type-II structure resulting in a redshift of the emission spectrum. Although the band gap of ZnS is wider, its lattice mismatch with InP is larger (∼7.7%), resulting in more defect states and lowered quantum yield (QY). To overcome the above problems, we introduced the intermediate ZnMnS layer in InP/ZnMnS/ZnS QDs. The wide band gap of the intermediate layer (3.7 eV) can confine the electrons and holes in the core completely, and the formation of the type-II structure is avoided. As a result, green InP-based QDs with QY up to 80% were obtained. By adjusting the halogen ratios of the ZnX2 precursor, the minimum and maximum emission peaks are 470 and 620 nm, respectively, covering the whole visible range. Finally, after optimizing the coating shell process, the maximum external quantum efficiency of QD light-emitting diodes fabricated from this InP-based green light QDs can reach 2.7%.
