Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs Toward Organ Donation Registration Among Asian Americans: Development and Pilot-testing of Educational Intervention Video.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Organ donation registration rates in the United States are lowest among Asian Americans. This study aimed to investigate the reasons for low organ donation registration rates among Asian Americans and develop educational material to help improve organ donation rates and awareness.

Methods

We conducted a 2-phase study. In phase 1, a cross-sectional observational survey was distributed in-person on an iPad to members of the Asian community in Queens, New York, to investigate their knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward organ donation. Based on the results, an educational video was developed, and the efficacy of the video was assessed with an independent cohort of participants in phase 2 using a pre-/post-video comprehension assessment survey.

Results

Among 514 Chinese or Korean Americans who participated in the phase 1 survey, 97 participants (19%) reported being registered organ donors. Registered donors were more likely to have previously discussed their organ donation wishes with their family (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.56-8.85; P < 0.01), knowledge of the different registration methods (aOR, 2.57; 95% CI, 1.24-5.31; P < 0.01), or know a registered organ donor (aOR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.39-4.95; P < 0.01). For the educational video efficacy assessment given pre-/post-video, the majority (90%) of the respondents reported learning something new from the video. After watching the video, there was a significant improvement in the mean knowledge score regarding organ donation (63% versus 92%; P < 0.01) and an increase in intention to have discussion regarding organ donation with family.

Conclusions

We found varies factors associated with low organ donation registration rates among Asian Americans and demonstrated the potential of our educational video to impart organ donation knowledge to viewers and instigate the intention to have family discussions regarding organ donation. Further research is needed to assess the impact of videos in motivating actual organ donation registration.

Project description:BackgroundThe aim of the study was to analyze determinants affecting attitudes toward organ donation among medical students at medical universities in Poland.Materials and methodsThe study involved 1,348 medical students. It was performed using a validated questionnaire of attitude toward organ donation and transplantation (ODT) [PCID-DTO RIOS: A questionnaire designed by the International Collaborative Organ Donation project about organ transplantation and donation].ResultsIt was shown that those who would not donate their family member's organs for transplantation were far more likely to believe it was not their moral duty (p = 0.013) and to feel no solidarity with those in need (p = 0.000). Those who spoke to their families believed it was their moral duty (p = 0.000), and believed they would do it out of solidarity with those in need (p = 0.000). Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate differences in knowledge, and attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation of emergency physicians. Additionally, we analyzed factors affecting the attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation.MethodsWe conducted a survey of specialists and residents registered with the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine in December 2020. The respondents' sex, age, position, personal registration for organ donation, experience of soliciting organ donation, participation in related education, knowledge, and attitude about brain death organ donation, and attitude toward stopping life-sustaining treatments were investigated. According to the characteristics of the respondents (specialists or residents, experience and education on organ and tissue donation), their knowledge and attitude toward deceased organ donation were compared. Stepwise hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to investigate the factors affecting the attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation.ResultsOf the total 428 respondents, there were 292 emergency medicine specialists and 136 medical residents. Specialists and those who registered or wished to donate organs had higher knowledge and attitude scores regarding deceased organ and tissue donation. Those who had experience recommending organ and tissue donation more than 6 times had higher knowledge scores on deceased organ and tissue donation and higher overall scores in attitude. Those who received education from the Korean Organ Donation Agency had higher knowledge scores. Specialists, and those who wished to donate or had registered as organ donors and had a higher life-sustaining treatment attitude score and knowledge about deceased organ and tissue donation, had more positive attitudes toward deceased organ and tissue donation.ConclusionFor more potential deceased organ and tissue donors to be referred for donation, there should be continuous education for emergency physicians on brain-dead organ and tissue donation-related knowledge and procedures. In addition, institutional or systematic improvements that can lead to organ donation when deciding on the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment should be considered.

Project description:IntroductionSouth Asian (SA) and East Asian (EA) older adults represent the fastest-growing racial/ethnic groups of Americans at risk for dementia. While recruiting older SA adults into a brain health study, we encountered unexpected hesitancy toward structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis and stigmatizing attitudes related to internal locus of control (LoC) for future dementia risks. We hypothesized that support for MRI-related research was influenced by these attitudes as well as personal MRI experience, perceived MRI safety, and concerns for personal risk for future dementia/stroke.MethodsWe developed a brief cross-sectional survey to assess older adults' MRI experiences and perceptions, desire to learn of six incidental findings of increasing impact on health, and attitudes related to dementia (including LoC) and research participation. We recruited a convenience sample of 256 respondents (74% reporting as 50+) from the New Jersey/New York City area to complete the survey (offered in English, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish) and modeled the proportional odds (PO) for favorable attitudes toward research activities.ResultsSeventy-seven SA and 84 EA respondents were analyzed alongside 95 White, Black, or Hispanic adults. White (PO = 2.54, p = 0.013) and EA (PO = 2.14, p = 0.019) respondents were both more likely than SA respondents to endorse healthy volunteers' participation in research, and the difference between White and SA respondents was mediated by the latter's greater internal LoC for dementia risks. EA respondents had more worries for future dementia/stroke than SA respondents (p = 0.006) but still shared SA respondents' lower wish (measured by proportion of total) to learn of incidental MRI findings.DiscussionSA-and EA compared to SA-older adults had low desire to learn of incidental MRI findings but had different attitudes toward future dementia/stroke risks.
