Dynamics of Dilute Nanoalloy Catalysts.

ABSTRACT: Capturing the dynamic character of metal nanoparticles under the reaction conditions is one of the major challenges within heterogeneous catalysis. The role of nanoparticle dynamics is particularly important for metal alloys as the surface composition responds sensitively to the gas environment. Here, a first-principles-based kinetic Monte Carlo method is developed to compare the dynamics of dilute PdAu alloy nanoparticles in inert and CO-rich atmospheres, corresponding to reaction conditions for catalyst deactivation and activation. CO influences the dynamics of the activation by facilitating the formation of vacancies and mobile Au-CO complexes, which are needed to obtain CO-stabilized Pd monomers on the surface. The structure of the catalyst and the location of the Pd monomers determine the rate of deactivation. The rate of catalyst deactivation is slow at low temperatures, which suggests that metastable structures determine the catalyst activity at typical operating conditions. The developed method is general and can be applied to a range of metal catalysts and reactions.

CO2 Hydrogenation over Unsupported Fe-Co Nanoalloy Catalysts.

Project description:The thermo-catalytic synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO2 and H2 is of great interest for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this work, we aim to contribute to the fundamental understanding of the effect of alloying on the reaction yield and selectivity to a specific product. For this purpose, Fe-Co alloy nanoparticles (nanoalloys) with 30, 50 and 76 wt% Co content are synthesized via the Inert Gas Condensation method. The nanoalloys show a uniform composition and a size distribution between 10 and 25 nm, determined by means of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The catalytic activity for CO2 hydrogenation is investigated in a plug flow reactor coupled with a mass spectrometer, carrying out the reaction as a function of temperature (393-823 K) at ambient pressure. The Fe-Co nanoalloys prove to be more active and more selective to CO than elemental Fe and Co nanoparticles prepared by the same method. Furthermore, the Fe-Co nanoalloys catalyze the formation of C2-C5 hydrocarbon products, while Co and Fe nanoparticles yield only CH4 and CO, respectively. We explain this synergistic effect by the simultaneous variation in CO2 binding energy and decomposition barrier as the Fe/Co ratio in the nanoalloy changes. With increasing Fe content, increased activation temperatures for the formation of CH4 (from 440 K to 560 K) and C2-C5 hydrocarbons (from 460 K to 560 K) are observed.

Optimising surface d charge of AuPd nanoalloy catalysts for enhanced catalytic activity.

Project description:Understanding the catalytic mechanism of bimetallic nanocatalysts remains challenging. Here, we adopt an adsorbate mediated thermal reduction approach to yield monodispersed AuPd catalysts with continuous change of the Pd-Au coordination numbers embedded in a mesoporous carbonaceous matrix. The structure of nanoalloys is well-defined, allowing for a direct determination of the structure-property relationship. The results show that the Pd single atom and dimer are the active sites for the base-free oxidation of primary alcohols. Remarkably, the d-orbital charge on the surface of Pd serves as a descriptor to the adsorbate states and hence the catalytic performance. The maximum d-charge gain occurred in a composition with 33-50 at% Pd corresponds to up to 9 times enhancement in the reaction rate compared to the neat Pd. The findings not only open an avenue towards the rational design of catalysts but also enable the identification of key steps involved in the catalytic reactions.

Molten salt synthesis of carbon-supported Pt-rare earth metal nanoalloy catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:The synthesis of nano-sized alloys of Pt and rare earth (RE) metal catalysts has been a huge challenge due to a significantly large standard reduction potential difference of Pt and RE metals and the high synthesis temperature. Pt x Y/C catalysts with an average particle size of around 21 nm, were synthesized by mixing K2PtCl4 with Y2O3 (a molar ratio of Pt : Y = 1 : 1) with a carbon support in a molten LiCl-CaH2 system by a one-step molten salt synthesis method at 600 °C. The synthesis processes of the Pt x Y/C alloys are proposed as follows: Pt nanoparticles were first obtained by the reaction of K2PtCl4 and CaH2 at 210 °C, then Y ions were preferentially reduced on the Pt nanoparticle surface by the reduction of CaH2, followed by Pt x Y alloy formation in the molten LiCl-CaH2 system at 600 °C. Molten LiCl provides a strong reducing environment and lowers the formation temperature of alloys. Pt2Gd/C and Pt2La/C were also obtained with Gd2O3 and La2O3 as the starting raw materials, respectively by using the same process. When investigated as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the half-wave potentials of Pt x RE/Cs are all more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (e.g., 0.905 V for Pt x Y/C while 0.880 V for JM Pt/C), and the nano-sized Pt x Y/C alloy shows higher electrocatalytic activity toward the ORR and preferable catalytic durability with respect to JM Pt/C catalysts. This facile synthesis method provides an effective strategy for the preparation of Pt-RE based multicomponent nanoalloys, especially in large-scale production.

Atomic ensemble and electronic effects in Ag-rich AgPd nanoalloy catalysts for oxygen reduction in alkaline media.

Project description:The ability to design and characterize uniform, bimetallic alloy nanoparticles, where the less active metal enhances the activity of the more active metal, would be of broad interest in catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate that simultaneous reduction of Ag and Pd precursors provides uniform, Ag-rich AgPd alloy nanoparticles (~5 nm) with high activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. The particles are crystalline and uniformly alloyed, as shown by X-ray diffraction and probe corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The ORR mass activity per total metal was 60% higher for the AgPd(2) alloy relative to pure Pd. The mass activities were 2.7 and 3.2 times higher for Ag(9)Pd (340 mA/mg(metal)) and Ag(4)Pd (598 mA/mg(metal)), respectively, than those expected for a linear combination of mass activities of Ag (60 mA/mg(Ag)) and Pd (799 mA/mg(Pd)) particles, based on rotating disk voltammetry. Moreover, these synergy factors reached 5-fold on a Pd mass basis. For silver-rich alloys (Ag(?4)Pd), the particle surface is shown to contain single Pd atoms surrounded by Ag from cyclic voltammetry and CO stripping measurements. This morphology is favorable for the high activity through a combination of modified electronic structure, as shown by XPS, and ensemble effects, which facilitate the steps of oxygen bond breaking and desorption for the ORR. This concept of tuning the heteroatomic interactions on the surface of small nanoparticles with low concentrations of precious metals for high synergy in catalytic activity may be expected to be applicable to a wide variety of nanoalloys.

Dynamics of atmospheres with a non-dilute condensible component.

Project description:The diversity of characteristics for the host of recently discovered exoplanets opens up a great deal of fertile new territory for geophysical fluid dynamics, particularly when the fluid flow is coupled to novel thermodynamics, radiative transfer or chemistry. In this paper, we survey one of these new areas-the climate dynamics of atmospheres with a non-dilute condensible component, defined as the situation in which a condensible component of the atmosphere makes up a substantial fraction of the atmospheric mass within some layer. Non-dilute dynamics can occur for a wide range of condensibles, generically applying near both the inner and the outer edges of the conventional habitable zone and in connection with runaway greenhouse phenomena. It also applies in a wide variety of other planetary circumstances. We first present a number of analytical results developing some key features of non-dilute atmospheres, and then show how some of these features are manifest in simulations with a general circulation model adapted to handle non-dilute atmospheres. We find that non-dilute atmospheres have weak horizontal temperature gradients even for rapidly rotating planets, and that their circulations are largely barotropic. The relative humidity of the condensible component tends towards 100% as the atmosphere becomes more non-dilute, which has important implications for runaway greenhouse thresholds. Non-dilute atmospheres exhibit a number of interesting organized convection features, for which there is not yet any adequate theoretical understanding.

Nanoalloy libraries from laser-induced thermionic emission reduction.

Project description:Nanoalloys, especially high-entropy nanoalloys (HENAs) that contain equal stoichiometric metallic elements in each nanoparticle, are widely used in vast applications. Currently, the synthesis of HENAs is challenged by slow reaction kinetics that leads to phase segregation, sophisticated pretreatment of precursors, and inert conditions that preclude scalable fabrication of HENAs. Here, we report direct conversion of metal salts to ultrafine HENAs on carbonaceous support by nanosecond pulsed laser under atmospheric conditions. Because of the unique laser-induced thermionic emission and etch on carbon, the reduced metal elements were gathered to ultrafine HENAs and stabilized by defective carbon support. This scalable, facile, and low-cost method overcomes the immiscible issue and can produce various HENAs uniformly with a size of 1 to 3 nanometers and metal elements up to 11 with productivity up to 7 grams per hour. One of the senary HENAs exhibited excellent catalytic performance in oxygen reduction reaction, manifesting great potential in practical applications.

Dynamics of Active SiO<sub>2</sub>-Pt Janus Colloids in Dilute Poly(ethylene oxide) Solutions.

Project description:Self-propelled Janus colloids (JCs) have recently gained much attention due to their ability to move autonomously and mimic biological microswimmers. This ability makes them suitable for prospective drug/cargo-delivery applications in microscopic domains. Understanding their dynamics in surroundings doped with macromolecules such as polymers is crucial, as most of the target application media are complex in nature. In this study, we investigate the self-diffusiophoretic motion of hydrogen peroxide-fuelled SiO2-Pt JCs in the presence of dilute amounts of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Despite the addition of PEO chains producing a Newtonian behavior with negligible increase in viscosity, the ballistic movement and rotational fluctuations of active JCs are observed to be significantly suppressed. With an increase in the polymer concentration, this leads to a transition from smooth to jittery to cage-hopping to the arrested motion of active JCs. We further propose that the anisotropic interaction of the polymers with the JC increases the "local drag" of the medium, resulting in the unusual impediment of the active motion.

Special Magnetic Catalyst with Lignin-Reduced Au-Pd Nanoalloy.

Project description:This study describes a new strategy to fabricate a special magnetic catalyst via facile coating Au-Pd nanoalloy catalysts onto a commercial magnetic stirring bar, without the incorporation of iron element. First, the abundant natural "waste" lignin was utilized as the reducing and stabilizing agent to prepare Au-Pd nanoalloys in a green manner. The Au-Pd nanoalloys were assumed to have a core-shell structure with an Au-rich core and a Pd-rich shell. The Au-Pd nanoalloys could be well dispersed in aqueous medium due to the stabilizing effect of lignin and be conveniently coated onto the surface of a commercial stirring bar. The Au1.0Pd1.0 nanoalloy catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activities in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-amnophenol by NaBH4, with a rate constant (k) of 0.239 min-1, which was higher than that of Au0.5Pd1.0 and Au2.0Pd1.0 nanoalloys and 4 times higher than that of a single-component Au or Pd nanoparticles. Besides, the catalytic ability of Au-Pd nanoalloy catalyst could be maintained even after seven cycles of catalysis. The catalytic rate constant was found to be positively correlated to the stirring speed of the bar. The scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed ravines and pores on the surface of lignin-nanoalloys composites, implying the possible mechanism of the catalytic activities. This study not only proved the feasibility of lignin for green synthesis of Au-Pd nanoalloys but also proposed a facile and innovated strategy for the future production of solid/liquid catalytic platforms where the developed method could be used to coat any surface interfacing the reagents.

Self-activated surface dynamics in gold catalysts under reaction environments.

Project description:Nanoporous gold (NPG) with sponge-like structures has been studied by atomic-scale and microsecond-resolution environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) combined with ab initio energy calculations. Peculiar surface dynamics were found in the reaction environment for the oxidation of CO at room temperature, involving residual silver in the NPG leaves as well as gold and oxygen atoms, especially on {110} facets. The NPG is thus classified as a novel self-activating catalyst. The essential structure unit for catalytic activity was identified as Au-AgO surface clusters, implying that the NPG is regarded as a nano-structured silver oxide catalyst supported on the matrix of NPG, or an inverse catalyst of a supported gold nanoparticulate (AuNP) catalyst. Hence, the catalytically active structure in the gold catalysts (supported AuNP and NPG catalysts) can now be experimentally unified in low-temperature CO oxidation, a step forward towards elucidating the fascinating catalysis mechanism of gold.

Visualizing atomic-scale redox dynamics in vanadium oxide-based catalysts.

Project description:Surface redox processes involving oxygen atom exchange are fundamental in catalytic reactions mediated by metal oxides. These processes are often difficult to uncover due to changes in the surface stoichiometry and atomic arrangement. Here we employ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to study vanadium oxide supported on titanium dioxide, which is of relevance as a catalyst in, e.g., nitrogen oxide emission abatement for environmental protection. The observations reveal a reversible transformation of the vanadium oxide surface between an ordered and disordered state, concomitant with a reversible change in the vanadium oxidation state, when alternating between oxidizing and reducing conditions. The transformation depends on the anatase titanium dioxide surface termination and the vanadium oxide layer thickness, suggesting that the properties of vanadium oxide are sensitive to the supporting oxide. These atomic-resolution observations offer a basis for rationalizing previous reports on shape-sensitive catalytic properties.Redox processes in metal oxide surfaces can exhibit structure sensitivities which are difficult to uncover. Here, the authors use atomic-resolution imaging to demonstrate facet dependent alterations in the surfaces of supported vanadium oxide upon reduction and oxidation.
