Project description:Nowadays, China insists on the strategy of ecological priority and green development, and the Yangtze River Economic Belt is a pioneering demonstration belt for the construction of ecological civilization in China. Promoting industrial ecological efficiency is of great significance to Chinese sustainable development and high-quality economic development. Based on the provincial panel data of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt region from 2011 to 2020, we use the super-efficient slacks-based measure of efficiency SBM model to measure the industrial eco-efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, reveal the spatial differences in industrial eco-efficiency of different provincial units, and explore the industrial eco-efficiency. The results show that: (1) from the perspective of the Yangtze River Economic Belt as a whole, industrial eco-efficiency is on a stable upward trend, but the efficiency level is not high, and there is more room for improvement; (2) in terms of the spatial distribution of industrial eco-efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, there are significant differences, with industrial eco-efficiency in the downstream region being higher than that in the midstream region and the upstream region, and the lowest in the midstream region, while in terms of the spatial distribution pattern, the industrial eco-efficiency of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt eco-efficiency has a significant positive spatial autocorrelation; (3) in terms of influencing factors, economic development level, factor endowment, and foreign investment can significantly influence industrial eco-efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The study's result helps provide theoretical guidance and practical reference for promoting the green and ecological development of industries in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
Project description:The spatial spillover of urban innovation has increasingly become an important factor affecting urban total factor productivity (TFP) growth. Based on the panel data of 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2004 to 2020, this paper illustrates the spatial-temporal evolution trend of urban innovation and manufacturing total factor productivity and uses the spatial Dubin model to study the direct and indirect effects of urban innovation on manufacturing total factor productivity. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)Spatial correlation and heterogeneity between urban innovation and manufacturing total factor productivity prove to be significant in the Yangtze River Economic Belt;(2)Urban innovation has a significant positive impact on manufacturing total factor productivity and has a positive spillover effect on surrounding cities; (3)The effect of urban innovation on manufacturing total factor productivity varies with time and region;(4) Mechanism analysis shows that talent agglomeration significantly promotes the positive impact of urban innovation on manufacturing total factor productivity, while the spillover effect is insignificant.
Project description:Urban economic development is crucial to regional economy and people's life, and enhancing the efficiency of urban economic development is of great significance to boost sustainable and healthy economic and social development. In this paper, from the perspective of sustainable development, data of 104 cities in China's Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2004 to 2019 are selected, and the urban resource consumption index and urban pollutant emission index are synthesized as new input-output indicators using the Time Series Global Principal Component Analysis (GPCA), combined with the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) Index Model, Standard Deviation Ellipse (SDE) Model to measure the total factor productivity index of urban economic development in China's YREB and analyze its spatial and temporal evolution. The results show that from 2004 to 2019, the total factor productivity index of urban economic development in China's YREB showed an overall fluctuating upward trend with an average annual growth of 5.8%, and the analysis by decomposing indicators shows that the growth of total factor productivity of urban economic development in China's YREB is mainly influenced by the growth of technological progress. Meanwhile, there are obvious regional differences in the efficiency of urban economic development in China's YREB, with the largest difference in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the second largest in the upper reaches, and the smallest in the lower reaches. From 2004 to 2019, the efficiency center of gravity of urban economic development efficiency in the YREB has always been located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River region. The spatial distribution pattern of urban economic development efficiency in the YREB is dominated by the northeast-southwest direction and tends to be concentrated in the study time period.
Project description:The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) ports are pivotal in shaping the Yangtze River Economic Belt and advancing urban economies across China. This article utilizes panel data from 20 cities with ports in the YRD area, spanning from 2011 to 2020, using the spatial Durbin model to explore how these ports influence urban economic growth. The findings indicate that: (1) The YRD ports significantly contribute to economic growth in both the port cities and their surrounding areas, with the indirect impact on neighboring cities being more substantial than the direct effect on the cities themselves; (2) The beneficial spillover effects of the YRD ports on the economic growth of nearby cities vary in intensity over different spatial ranges, marked by distinct boundary effects and geographical attenuation. The influence extends up to approximately 110km; (3) Within the various elements impacting the economic growth of cities in the YRD, financial development prominently exhibits a threshold effect on urban economic growth; (4) Upon analyzing heterogeneity, inland and coastal port cities manifest divergent spillover effects, with inland port cities predominantly exerting a positive spillover on adjacent regions. Accordingly, in order to eventually achieve the shared prosperity of the region's economy, it is recommended that a strong top-level design be established and that efforts be made to transform the YRD region into a core region a diffusion and driving effect.
Project description:Universities are important sources of knowledge and key members of the regional innovation system. The key problem in Chinese universities is the low efficiency of the scientific and technological (S&T) transformation, which limits the promotion of regional innovation and economic development. This article proposes the three-stage efficiency analytical framework, which regards it as a complex and interactive process. Avoiding the problem of considering the input and output of university S&T transformation as a "black box" and neglecting the links among different transformation stages. The super efficiency network SBM model is applied to the heterogeneous region of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Empirical research proves that university S&T transformation has not been effectively improved and the scientific resources invested in universities have not been efficiently utilized in recent years. Generally, Despite the correlation between regional economy and transformation efficiency, the exclusive increase in resources is not enough. Regional openness and the quality of research talents are key factors for the application of technological innovation and technology marketization. Universities should not only pursue the number of research outputs but pay more attention to high-quality knowledge production to overcome difficulties in research achievements transformation.
Project description:Combining freshwater consumption and wastewater emissions into a unified analysis framework and utilizing the epsilon-based measure (EBM) model with the characteristics of radial model and non-radial model, this paper evaluates green water use efficiency (GWUE) of 11 provincial-regions in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) and investigates its spatiotemporal differences during the period 2005-2014, on basis of which the contribution rate of each input-specific green water use inefficiency in the overall green water use efficiency and the potential of freshwater-saving and wastewater emissions reduction are also calculated. The Theil index is used to explore the sources of the provincial gap of green water use inefficiency, and a random-effect panel Tobit model is applied to test the impact of the influencing factors of green water use inefficiency in the YREB. It is found that green water use inefficiency of the YREB is relatively low and regional differences is significant during the sample period, indicating a large potential of water-saving and water pollution reduction, and narrowing BGAP and WGAP of the Upstream is the key for improving green water use inefficiency in the YREB. The panel Tobit regression results show that economic development, technological innovation, water use structure, water resources endowment, environmental regulation and regional differences all play positive/negative effects on green water use inefficiency in the YREB, while these factors' influencing direction, degree and significance are significantly different. The conclusions of our study can provide considerably valuable information for the YREB to reserve water resources and reduce wastewater emissions.
Project description:It has great significance for improving the logistics service ability of the Yangtze River economic belt, optimizing the industrial structure of manufacturing industry, and realizing the integrated development of the Yangtze River economic belt to explore the collaborative evolution of logistics industry and manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River economic belt, and identify the leading position of the collaborative development of the two industries, so as to. Based on the Haken Model, this paper summarizes the coevolution law of logistics industry and manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River economic belt through two-stage empirical analysis, and identifies the order parameters of the co-development of logistics industry and manufacturing industry. The results show that the overall degree of coordination between the logistics industry and the manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River economic belt is high. And the order parameter has been changed from manufacturing industry in 2003-2009 to logistics industry in 2010-2017. The gap between regions has been reduced, and the western region has the advantage of post development.
Project description:With the continuous occurrence of natural disasters, natural hazard triggered technological accident (Natech) risks also follow. At present, many countries have performed much research on Natech risks. However, there is still a lack of Natech research at the regional or watershed level in China. The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) is not only an industrially intensive development area but also an area with frequent natural disasters. In this study, we selected the YREB as a typical case to study the Natech risk triggered by floods, geological disasters, and typhoons at the regional or watershed level. Four types of risk indicators representing risk sources, natural hazard factors, control levels, and vulnerabilities were developed to assess the spatial patterns of the Natech risks of the YREB. The results show that the Natech risk triggered by floods and typhoons is more serious in eastern area and central area than in western zone and that the Natech risk triggered by geological disasters is more serious in the west part. Approximately 7.85% of the areas are at relatively high-risk and above the Natech risk level based on the comprehensive assessment of three types of Natech risks. The combined population of these areas accounts for approximately 15.67% of the whole YREB, and the combined GDP accounts for approximately 25.41%. It can be predicted that the occurrence of Natech risks in these areas will cause serious harm to both the people and the economy. This work will provide the basis and key management direction for Natech risk management in the YREB.
Project description:Green innovation is an important driving force to promote the sustainable development of urban society and economy. This paper constructs an evaluation index system containing social undesirable outputs, and uses the Super-SBM model and the Malmquist-Luenberger index to evaluate green innovation efficiency in 42 cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2013 to 2017. Additionally, spatial autocorrelation analysis is used to study the spatial correlation of green innovation efficiency. Finally, the coupling coordination degree model is used to study the coupling coordination degree between green innovation efficiency and high-tech industries. The following results were obtained. (1) The average value of green innovation efficiency increased from 1.0446 to 1.0987, and the annual average growth rate of total factor productivity of green innovation was 1.1%. (2) Green innovation efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt had a significant spatial positive correlation, but the types of agglomeration among cities in different sections of the Yangtze River were quite different. (3) The coupling coordination degree between green innovation efficiency and the development level of high-tech industries in the cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt was in the basic coordination stage. Based on the research results, we suggest that cities in this belt further enhance the interactive relationship between green innovation and economic development and promote the coordinated development of economy and society.
Project description:Green development is the necessary path and fundamental way for urban development. Exploring the influence mechanism and spatial effect of green development on the urban human settlement resilience is conducive to promoting high-quality and sustainable urban development. We used the entropy method, super-efficient SBM model, spatial econometric model and threshold model to analyze the spatial spillover effect of green development efficiency on urban human settlement resilience and its nonlinear impact in the Yangtze River Delta(YRD) urban agglomeration. The results indicated that During the study period, the level of green development efficiency and urban settlement resilience was on the rise, and the spatial differences between different regions was significant. The green development efficiency of each city in the YRD urban agglomeration has a significant contribution to urban human settlement resilience in the region, but has a negative spatial effect on the level of urban human settlement resilience in the neighboring region. At different population density levels, the effect of green development efficiency on urban human settlement resilience shows a significant "V" non-linear characteristic. Furthermore, the influence of green development efficiency on urban human settlement resilience increases in a stepwise manner under different industrial structure distribution. The results of this study can help provide a reference basis for the creation of high-level, high-quality green and livable resilient cities in the YRD urban agglomeration under the concept of green development, and provide relevant experience for the construction of livable cities in other regions of China.
