Project description:Turning while walking is ubiquitous and requires linear and angular momenta generation to redirect the body's trajectory and rotate towards the new direction of travel. This study examined strategies that healthy young adults used during each gait phase to generate transverse-plane momenta during pre-planned and late-cued 90° turns. During leftward turns, we expected that momenta would be generated most during the gait phases known to generate leftward linear and angular momenta during straight line gait. We found distinct roles of gait phases towards generating momenta during turns that partially supported our hypotheses. Supporting one hypothesis, the change in transverse-plane angular momentum and average moment were greater during double support with the left foot in front vs. other gait phases. Also, the change in leftward linear momentum and average leftward force were greater during right single support vs. other gait phases during straight-line gait and late-cued turns. However, during pre-planned turns, the average leftward force was not significantly greater during right single support vs. other gait phases. Overall, transverse-plane angular momentum generation during turns is similar to its generation during straight-line gait, suggesting that healthy young adults can leverage momenta control strategies used during straight-line gait during turns.

Project description:This study evaluated frontal-plane dynamic balance control during 90° left turns while walking. Ten healthy young adults performed straight-line gait, pre-planned turns, and turns cued visually (late-cued turns). We quantified rotational balance control via the range of frontal-plane angular momentum (Hf) about the center of mass (COM), and the relative positioning of the COM and the feet using the horizontal distance from the COM to the lateral edge of the base of support (lateral distance) and the mediolateral margin of stability (MOSml). We hypothesized that the Hf range would increase and the lateral distance and MOSml minima would decrease during each turn type vs. straight-line gait and during late-cued vs. pre-planned turns. We found that the range of Hf was significantly greater during each turn type vs. straight-line gait and during late-cued vs. pre-planned turns. Also, the lateral distance minima were significantly smaller during turns vs. straight-line gait, and during pre-planned vs. late-cued turns. Our hypotheses about MOSml were partially supported because the MOSml minima patterns were specific to right or left steps and were not significantly different between straight-line gait and pre-planned turns overall, but the right step's MOSml minima were more negative during late-cued vs. pre-planned turns and between either turn and straight-line gait. Finally, we observed slower gait speeds, fewer footfalls, shorter turn phase duration, and different turn strategies used during late-cued vs. pre-planned turns. Overall, these findings reveal multifaceted control of frontal-plane balance during turns encountered during everyday mobility.

Project description:Background/Objectives: Hip mobility and joint loading in hip osteoarthritis (HOA) patients are mostly assessed during straight walking. Yet, mobility limitations in the frontal and transverse planes are rarely found during this task in subjects with mild-to-moderate symptoms. Turning movements are frequently encountered during everyday life and might require larger hip mobility compared to straight walking, especially in the frontal and transverse planes. Thus, hip mobility and hip loading during straight walking and 90° turns in persons with HOA and healthy older adults were compared in this study. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 21 subjects with mild-to-moderate HOA and 21 healthy controls. Hip angles and moments were assessed during straight walking and 90° step and spin turns. Gait analysis was conducted using a motion capture system and a force plate. Group and movement task differences were assessed with a mixed-model ANOVA. Results: Peak abduction and adduction angles were largest during the step and spin turn, respectively, as were the group differences between HOA subjects and healthy subjects. Both turns require a greater transverse hip range of motion compared to straight walking. Limitations in transverse hip mobility in the HOA group were especially prominent during the step turn. Both turns cause higher joint moments than straight walking. Conclusions: The additional inclusion of 90° step and spin turns into gait analysis can enhance early identification of hip mobility limitations in the frontal and transverse planes in subjects with mild-to-moderate hip osteoarthritis. Early diagnosis is crucial for the timely application of conservative treatment strategies.

Project description:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) can carry phononic angular momentum, showing great potential as an energy-efficient way to control magnetism. Still, out-of-plane phononic angular momentum in SAW and its interaction with magnetism remain elusive. Here, we studied the SAW-induced magnetoacoustic waves and spin pumping in Ni-based films on LiNbO3 with selected SAW propagation direction. The crystal inversion asymmetry induces circularly polarized phonons with large out-of-plane angular momenta so that up to 60% of the SAW power attenuates nonreciprocally controlled by the out-of-plane magnetization component. The SAW propagation direction dependence of the nonreciprocity verifies the crystal origin of the phononic angular momentum, and a chiral spin pumping demonstrates that the circular polarization can control the spin current generation efficiency. These results provide an additional degree of freedom for the acoustic control of magnetism and open an avenue for applying circularly polarized phonons.

Project description:BackgroundUnderstanding typical gait development is critical in developing suitable physical therapy methods for gait disorders. This study investigated the developmental changes and controlling mechanisms of straight gait.MethodsWe conducted an experimental procedure among 90 participants, including 76 typically developing children and 14 healthy adults. The children were divided according to age into 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10-year age groups. We created two indices to quantify straight gait using the extrapolated center of mass (XCOM; goal index, XCOMG and actual progress index, XCOMP), which were calculated and compared between the groups. Stepwise multiple regression was used to examine the effects of each gait variable on XCOMG and XCOMP. To eliminate the effects of multicollinearity, correlation coefficients were calculated for all gait variables.ResultsBoth XCOMG and XCOMP decreased gradually with age and were significantly larger in the 3-4 and 5-6 year groups than in the adult group. Multiple regression analysis showed that step velocity, step width, and the coefficiente of variation (CV) of the step width had independent coefficients of variation for the XCOMG, and the symmetry index of step time, step width, and the CV of the step width had independent CV for the XCOMP. These variables were selected as significant variables. The results showed that meandering gait was more pronounced at younger ages. Furthermore, straight gait observed in adulthood was achieved by the age of 7.ConclusionPace (step velocity) and stability (step width and CV of step width) may contribute to XCOMG, which assesses the ability to proceed in the direction of the target. Stability and symmetry may contribute to XCOMP, which assesses the ability to walk straight in one's own direction of progress. Physical therapists could apply these indices in children to assess their ability to walk straight.

Project description:BackgroundTransverse myelitis (TM) in childhood is a rare disorder characterized by the presence of spinal cord inflammation. Gait difficulty in children with TM is common; however, there is a paucity of literature regarding quantitative assessment of gait in children and adolescents with TM.ObjectivesTo characterize gait patterns in a cohort of ambulatory children with TM and age-matched, typically developing peers in order to better understand the functional mobility of patients diagnosed with childhood TM.MethodsThis was a retrospective study of 26 ambulatory pediatric patients with a confirmed diagnosis of TM who had undergone three-dimensional, instrumented gait analysis (3D-IGA) at 3 years of age or older. A group of 38 typically developing children served as a control group.ResultsGait in children with TM was characterized by moderate kinematic deviations as measured by the Gait Deviation Index (GDI) and a crouched gait pattern (p < .001), increased anterior pelvic tilt (p < .001), decreased motion at the knees (p < .001), and a wider base of support (foot progression angle, p < .001). The TM group had a slower walking speed (p < .001), shorter strides (p < .001), and an increased stance phase compared to controls.ConclusionOur study results showed moderate kinematic deviations quantified by the GDI. Overall, the gait pattern in the TM population tested had greater hip and knee flexion with wider foot progression angle. Identification of gait characteristics in children with TM is the first step in predicting changes in gait pattern as they mature over time, which may ultimately allow for targeted intervention to maintain their ambulatory function.

Project description:BackgroundDual-task walking is used as a treatment, for gait assessment, and as an outcome measure in Parkinson's disease (PD). Movement smoothness, i.e. its non-intermittency, is a movement cardinal feature. This study assesses whether dual-tasking reduces gait smoothness in PD alongside reducing speed, one of its well-known effects.MethodsThe Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, instrumented with an inertial sensor fixed to the back, was administered to 33 PD patients (15 females; age: median = 71 years; IQR = 10) to assess two walking types: straight-walking and turning-while-walking. The TUG test was completed in single-task and two dual-task modalities: cognitive (doing successive subtractions) and motor (holding a water glass). The angular speed spectral arc length metric (SPARC) and the Ln-DimensionLess Jerk (LDLJ), two smoothness measures quantifying the peaks and dips in the speed profile, were measured, along with the trunk angular velocity and the foot strikes number. ANOVA was used for hypothesis testing and estimated marginal means for post-hoc tests and effect sizes (ES).ResultsIn straight-walking and turning, cognitive and motor dual tasks decreased gait speed (ES range = [0.476, 1.379]; p < 0.01) and increased the step number (ES = [0.402, 0.927]; p < 0.05). SPARC (ES = [0.221, 0.493]; p < 0.05) and angular LDLJ (ES = [0.451, 0.929]; p < 0.01) were lower in the two dual-task conditions in both phases, indicating reduced gait smoothness than in single-task. This worsening of gait smoothness was partially confirmed after ruling out the dual-task effect on speed and step number. In particular, anterior-posterior SPARC during turning was still low in cognitive (ES = 0.351; p < 0.01) and motor (ES = 0.283; p < 0.05) dual tasks.ConclusionsIn PD, dual-tasking decreases gait speed and increases the step number when walking straight and turning while walking. Independently of these effects, dual-tasking also reduces gait smoothness. As an independent feature of movement, when dual-task walking is the outcome measure, improving smoothness may represent a novel treatment aim in PD. As long as it is instrumented with an inertial sensor, the TUG test is valuable for studying different walking types.Trial registrationNCT05904171 (ClinicalTrials.gov; date registration: 2023-06-06).

Project description:Forces generated by goldfish keratocytes and Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts have been measured with nanonewton precision and submicrometer spatial resolution. Differential interference contrast microscopy was used to visualize deformations produced by traction forces in elastic substrata, and interference reflection microscopy revealed sites of cell-substratum adhesions. Force ranged from a few nanonewtons at submicrometer spots under the lamellipodium to several hundred nanonewtons under the cell body. As cells moved forward, centripetal forces were applied by lamellipodia at sites that remained stationary on the substratum. Force increased and abruptly became lateral at the boundary of the lamellipodium and the cell body. When the cell retracted at its posterior margin, cell-substratum contact area decreased more rapidly than force, so that stress (force divided by area) increased as the cell pulled away. An increase in lateral force was associated with widening of the cell body. These mechanical data suggest an integrated, two-phase mechanism of cell motility: (1) low forces in the lamellipodium are applied in the direction of cortical flow and cause the cell body to be pulled forward; and (2) a component of force at the flanks pulls the rear margins forward toward the advancing cell body, whereas a large lateral component contributes to detachment of adhesions without greatly perturbing forward movement.

Project description:BackgroundTransverse acetabular ligament (TAL) is a 3-dimensional structure which cannot be defined by a single plane. Therefore, we aimed at describing the orientation of different parts of TAL with respect to anterior pelvic plane (APP) and correlate it with gender, body mass index (BMI), and Lewinnek's safe zone.MethodsA total of 109 consecutive patients undergoing imageless navigated THA were prospectively studied. Computer navigation was used as the measurement tool. APP was registered for navigation. After excision of osteophytes, a trial component matching the size of unreamed acetabular cavity was aligned with acetabular rim, outer and inner margins, and middle of TAL to record cup orientation with computer tracker.ResultsNinety-nine patients (41 males and 58 females, mean BMI of 28.8kg/m2) were studied after applying exclusion criteria. Mean acetabular inclination was 55.15°, 53.00°, 47.70°, and 42.60° respectively, for acetabular rim, outer, middle, and inner margins of the TAL. Corresponding mean acetabular anteversion was 6.63°, 7.41°, 11.23° and 14.90°respectively. Overall, 17.17%, 28.28%, 47.47% and 71.71% of cup orientation corresponding to acetabular rim, outer, middle, and inner margin of TAL respectively, were within Lewinnek's safe zone. No association was established between BMI and acetabular orientation. Males had overall lesser anteversion than females.ConclusionWe describe orientation of outer, middle, and inner margins of TAL, as reference planes for TAL, in relation to APP. The anteversion differs significantly with gender. A knowledge about these will assist surgeon in component placement during THA, with inner margin of TAL providing the best chance of orientation out of the studied landmarks.

Project description:The aim of this study is to describe the kinematic gait characteristics of straight line walk in clinically sound dairy cows using body mounted Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) at multiple anatomical locations. The temporal parameters used are speed and non-speed normalized stance duration, bipedal and tripedal support durations, maximal protraction and retraction angles of the distal limbs and vertical displacement curves of the upper body. Gait analysis was performed by letting 17 dairy cows walk in a straight line at their own chosen pace while equipped with IMU sensors on tubera sacrale, left and right tuber coxae (LTC and RTC), back, withers, head, neck and all four lower limbs. Data intervals with stride by stride regularity were selected based on video data. For temporal parameters, the median was calculated and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated based on linear mixed model (LMM) analysis, while for limb and vertical displacement curves, the median and most typical curves were calculated. The temporal parameters and distal limb angles showed consistent results with low variance and LMM analysis showed non-overlapping CI for all temporal parameters. The distal limb angle curves showed a larger and steeper retraction angle range for the distal front limbs compared with the hind limbs. The vertical displacement curves of the sacrum, withers, LTC and RTC showed a consistent sinusoidal pattern while the head, back and collar curves were less consistent and showed more variation between and within cows. This kinematic description might allow to objectively differentiate between normal and lame gait in the future and determine the best anatomical location for sensor attachment for lameness detection purposes.
