Surface potential-adjusted surface states in 3D topological photonic crystals.

ABSTRACT: Surface potential in a topological matter could unprecedentedly localize the waves. However, this surface potential is yet to be exploited in topological photonic systems. Here, we demonstrate that photonic surface states can be induced and controlled by the surface potential in a dielectric double gyroid (DG) photonic crystal. The basis translation in a unit cell enables tuning of the surface potential, which in turn regulates the degree of wave localization. The gradual modulation of DG photonic crystals enables the generation of a pseudomagnetic field. Overall, this study shows the interplay between surface potential and pseudomagnetic field regarding the surface states. The physical consequences outlined herein not only widen the scope of surface states in 3D photonic crystals but also highlight the importance of surface treatments in a photonic system.

Higher-Order Topological States in Surface-Wave Photonic Crystals.

Project description:Photonic topological states have revolutionized the understanding of the propagation and scattering of light. The recent discovery of higher-order photonic topological insulators opens an emergent horizon for 0D topological corner states. However, the previous realizations of higher-order topological insulators in electromagnetic-wave systems suffer from either a limited operational frequency range due to the lumped components involved or a bulky structure with a large footprint, which are unfavorable for achieving compact photonic devices. To overcome these limitations, a planar surface-wave photonic crystal realization of 2D higher-order topological insulators is hereby demonstrated experimentally. The surface-wave photonic crystals exhibit a very large bulk bandgap (a bandwidth of 28%) due to multiple Bragg scatterings and host 1D gapped edge states described by massive Dirac equations. The topology of those higher-dimensional photonic bands leads to the emergence of in-gap 0D corner states, which provide a route toward robust cavity modes for scalable compact photonic devices.

Quadrupole topological photonic crystals.

Project description:Quadrupole topological phases, exhibiting protected boundary states that are themselves topological insulators of lower dimensions, have recently been of great interest. Extensions of these ideas from current tight binding models to continuum theories for realistic materials require the identification of quantized invariants describing the bulk quadrupole order. Here we identify the analog of quadrupole order in Maxwell's equations for a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) through a double-band-inversion process. The quadrupole moment is quantized by the simultaneous presence of crystalline symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry, which is confirmed using three independent methods: analysis of symmetry eigenvalues, numerical calculations of the nested Wannier bands and the expectation value of the quadrupole operator. Furthermore, we reveal the boundary manifestations of quadrupole phases as quantized edge polarizations and fractional corner charges. The latter are the consequence of a filling anomaly of energy bands as first predicted in electronic systems.

Hybrid topological photonic crystals.

Project description:Topologically protected photonic edge states offer unprecedented robust propagation of photons that are promising for waveguiding, lasing, and quantum information processing. Here, we report on the discovery of a class of hybrid topological photonic crystals that host simultaneously quantum anomalous Hall and valley Hall phases in different photonic band gaps. The underlying hybrid topology manifests itself in the edge channels as the coexistence of the dual-band chiral edge states and unbalanced valley Hall edge states. We experimentally realize the hybrid topological photonic crystal, unveil its unique topological transitions, and verify its unconventional dual-band gap topological edge states using pump-probe techniques. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dual-band photonic topological edge channels can serve as frequency-multiplexing devices that function as both beam splitters and combiners. Our study unveils hybrid topological insulators as an exotic topological state of photons as well as a promising route toward future applications in topological photonics.

Topological antichiral surface states in a magnetic Weyl photonic crystal.

Project description:Chiral edge states that propagate oppositely at two parallel strip edges are a hallmark feature of Chern insulators which were first proposed in the celebrated two-dimensional (2D) Haldane model. Subsequently, counterintuitive antichiral edge states that propagate in the same direction at two parallel strip edges were discovered in a 2D modified Haldane model. Recently, chiral surface states, the 2D extension of one-dimensional (1D) chiral edge states, have also been observed in a photonic analogue of a 3D Haldane model. However, despite many recent advances in antichiral edge states and chiral surface states, antichiral surface states, the 2D extension of 1D antichiral edge states, have never been realized in any physical system. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral surface states by constructing a 3D modified Haldane model in a magnetic Weyl photonic crystal with two pairs of frequency-shifted Weyl points (WPs). The 3D magnetic Weyl photonic crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders with opposite magnetization in different triangular sublattices of a 3D honeycomb lattice. Using microwave field-mapping measurements, unique properties of antichiral surface states have been observed directly, including the antichiral robust propagation, tilted surface dispersion, a single open Fermi arc connecting two projected WPs and a single Fermi loop winding around the surface Brillouin zone (BZ). These results extend the scope of antichiral topological states and enrich the family of magnetic Weyl semimetals.

Topological states from topological crystals.

Project description:We present a scheme to explicitly construct and classify general topological states jointly protected by an onsite symmetry group and a spatial symmetry group. We show that all these symmetry-protected topological states can be adiabatically deformed into a special class of states we call topological crystals. A topological crystal in, for example, three dimensions is a real-space assembly of finite-sized pieces of topological states in one and two dimensions protected by the local symmetry group alone, arranged in a configuration invariant under the spatial group and glued together such that there is no open edge or end. As a demonstration of principle, we explicitly enumerate all inequivalent topological crystals for noninteracting time-reversal symmetric electronic insulators with spin-orbit coupling and any one of the 230 space groups. This enumeration gives topological crystalline insulators a full classification.

Direct observation of topological edge states in silicon photonic crystals: Spin, dispersion, and chiral routing.

Project description:Topological protection in photonics offers new prospects for guiding and manipulating classical and quantum information. The mechanism of spin-orbit coupling promises the emergence of edge states that are helical, exhibiting unidirectional propagation that is topologically protected against back scattering. We directly observe the topological states of a photonic analog of electronic materials exhibiting the quantum spin Hall effect, living at the interface between two silicon photonic crystals with different topological order. Through the far-field radiation that is inherent to the states' existence, we characterize their properties, including linear dispersion and low loss. We find that the edge state pseudospin is encoded in unique circular far-field polarization and linked to unidirectional propagation, thus revealing a signature of the underlying photonic spin-orbit coupling. We use this connection to selectively excite different edge states with polarized light and directly visualize their routing along sharp chiral waveguide junctions.

Three-dimensional topological acoustic crystals with pseudospin-valley coupled saddle surface states.

Project description:Topological valley states at the domain wall between two artificial crystals with opposite valley Chern numbers offer a feasible way to realize robust wave transport since only broken spatial symmetry is required. In addition to the valley, spin and crystal dimension are two other important degrees of freedom, particularly in realizing spin-related topological phenomena. Here we experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to construct two-dimensional acoustic topological pseudospin-valley coupled saddle surface states, designed from glide symmetry in a three-dimensional system. By taking advantage of such two-dimensional surface states, a full set of acoustic pseudospins can be realized, exhibiting pseudospin-valley dependent transport. Furthermore, due to the hyperbolic character of the dispersion of saddle surface states, multi-directional anisotropic controllable robust sound transport with little backscattering is observed. Our findings may open research frontiers for acoustic pseudospins and provide a satisfactory platform for exploring unique acoustic topological properties in three-dimensional structures.

Direct observation of valley-polarized topological edge states in designer surface plasmon crystals.

Project description:The extensive research of two-dimensional layered materials has revealed that valleys, as energy extrema in momentum space, could offer a new degree of freedom for carrying information. Based on this concept, researchers have predicted valley-Hall topological insulators that could support valley-polarized edge states at non-trivial domain walls. Recently, several kinds of photonic and sonic crystals have been proposed as classical counterparts of valley-Hall topological insulators. However, direct experimental observation of valley-polarized edge states in photonic crystals has remained difficult until now. Here, we demonstrate a designer surface plasmon crystal comprising metallic patterns deposited on a dielectric substrate, which can become a valley-Hall photonic topological insulator by exploiting the mirror-symmetry-breaking mechanism. Topological edge states with valley-dependent transport are directly visualized in the microwave regime. The observed edge states are confirmed to be fully valley-polarized through spatial Fourier transforms. Topological protection of the edge states at sharp corners is also experimentally demonstrated.

Photonic crystals possessing multiple Weyl points and the experimental observation of robust surface states.

Project description:Weyl points, as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space, have captured much attention recently in various branches of physics. Realizing topological materials that exhibit such nodal points is challenging and indeed, Weyl points have been found experimentally in transition metal arsenide and phosphide and gyroid photonic crystal whose structure is complex. If realizing even the simplest type of single Weyl nodes with a topological charge of 1 is difficult, then making a real crystal carrying higher topological charges may seem more challenging. Here we design, and fabricate using planar fabrication technology, a photonic crystal possessing single Weyl points (including type-II nodes) and multiple Weyl points with topological charges of 2 and 3. We characterize this photonic crystal and find nontrivial 2D bulk band gaps for a fixed kz and the associated surface modes. The robustness of these surface states against kz-preserving scattering is experimentally observed for the first time.

Robust high-Q filter with complete transmission by conjugated topological photonic crystals.

Project description:High quality factor (High-Q) and transmission optical devices are required for various applications in the fields of physics and engineering. Critical for these applications is the realization of a structure with high-Q, complete transmission and small volume. A robust high-Q filter with complete transmission by conjugated topological photonic crystals (CTPC) is presented. The study shows that an ultra-high-Q of more than 108 with complete transmission is obtained by the CTPC with 2 ?m long due to the excitation of conjugated topological edge-states (CTES). It is also found that even though the quality factor of resonances increases as the periodic number of multilayers increases, these resonances are still complete transmission. A novel concept of CTES is first proposed in this study and investigated the effect of its topological phenomenon on high quality factor via CTPC. We theoretically realize the robust high-Q and complete transmission in the CTPC, which is different from those in periodic, quasi-periodic, Fabry-Perot photonic crystals and traditional topological photonic crystals (TPC).
