Project description:After the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 BA.5 Omicron lineage in Portugal, we developed a seroepidemiologic survey based on a sample of 3,825 residents. Results indicated that from April 27 through June 8, 2022, the estimated seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid or spike IgG was 95.8%, which indicates a high level of protection.

Intra-urban differentials of fetal mortality in clusters of social vulnerability in Sao Paulo Municipality, Brazil.

Project description:This study aimed to analyze the distribution of stillbirths by birth weight, type of death, the trend of Stillbirth Rate (SBR), and avoidable causes of death, according to social vulnerability clusters in São Paulo Municipality, 2007-2017. Social vulnerability clusters were created with the k-means method. The Prais-Winsten generalized linear regression was used in the trend of SBR by < 2500 g, ≥ 2500 g, and total deaths analysis. The Brazilian list of avoidable causes of death was adapted for stillbirths. There was a predominance of antepartum stillbirths (70%). There was an increase in SBR with the growth of social vulnerability from the center to the outskirts of the city. The cluster with the highest vulnerability presented SBR 69% higher than the cluster with the lowest vulnerability. SBR ≥ 2500 g was decreasing in the clusters with the high vulnerability. There was an increase in SBR of avoidable causes of death of the cluster from the lowest to the highest vulnerability. Ill-defined causes of death accounted for 75% of deaths in the highest vulnerability area. Rates of fetal mortality and avoidable causes of death increased with social vulnerability. The trend of reduction of SBR ≥ 2500 g may suggest improvement in prenatal care in areas of higher vulnerability.

Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence, Oregon, USA, November 1, 2020-June 30, 2022.

Project description:We estimated SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in children in Oregon, USA, at 6 time points. Seroprevalence increased linearly during November 2020-December 2021 and peaked in February 2022 at 38.8% (95% CI 32.8%-46.5%). We observed no increase in the seroprevalence trend after widespread school reopening. Seroprevalence estimates complement case-based cumulative incidence.

Identifying risk factors specific to adolescent depression is crucial for prioritizing intervention strategies.What is added by this report?Neuroticism and emotional abuse were associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms, whereas a positive coping style was directly and strongly associated with a decreased risk.What are the implications for public health practice?Parental awareness of emotional abuse is critical in addressing adolescent depression. Future intervention strategies should aim to enhance individuals' positive coping mechanisms to improve mental health outcomes.

High SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in persons experiencing homelessness and shelter workers from a day-shelter in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Project description:Brazil presents one of the highest COVID-19 death tolls in the world. The initial SARS-CoV-2 epicenter was São Paulo city. As of 2019, the homeless population of São Paulo city was estimated at 24,344 individuals, the largest national homeless population. The present study aimed to concomitantly assess the molecular and serological prevalence and associated risk factors of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a homeless population and related shelter workers from a day-shelter. Serum samples, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs of persons who are homeless and shelter workers collected from August 25th to 27th, 2020 were tested for the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG antibodies by ELISA and SARS-CoV-2 RNA by RT-qPCR, respectively. All swab samples tested negative by RT-qPCR. Seropositivity of IgM and IgG was 5/203 (2.5%) and 111/203 (54.7%) in persons who are homeless, and 5/87 (5.7%) and 41/87 (47.1%) in shelter workers, respectively, with no statistical differences between groups. The high seroprevalence found herein indicates early environmental and urban spreading of SARS-CoV-2, associated with sociodemographic and economic vulnerability.

Increased reports of severe myocarditis associated with enterovirus infection in neonates, United Kingdom, 27 June 2022 to 26 April 2023.

Project description:Enteroviruses are a common cause of seasonal childhood infections. The vast majority of enterovirus infections are mild and self-limiting, although neonates can sometimes develop severe disease. Myocarditis is a rare complication of enterovirus infection. Between June 2022 and April 2023, twenty cases of severe neonatal enteroviral myocarditis caused by coxsackie B viruses were reported in the United Kingdom. Sixteen required critical care support and two died. Enterovirus PCR on whole blood was the most sensitive diagnostic test. We describe the initial public health investigation into this cluster and aim to raise awareness among paediatricians, laboratories and public health specialists.
