Exploring factors influencing sustainable human capital development: Insights from Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT: This study investigates the critical factors influencing Saudi Arabia's sustainable human capital development. It primarily aims to explore the correlations among the postulated variables and how each variable influences the development of a skilled, adaptable, and socially conscious workforce, in alignment with the objectives of the Saudi Vision 2030. This study utilizes a quantitative approach, employing partial least squares structural equation modeling to analyze the data collected from 203 public personnel in Saudi Arabia through an online questionnaire. The findings reveal that training, community engagement, institutional support, and technology integration are essential in sustainable human capital development. However, learning, education, and access to resources were not statistically significant and did not improve sustainable human capital development in Saudi Arabia. The findings underscore the significance of an educational framework that transcends traditional perspectives, focusing on not only academic preparation but also the holistic development of individuals. This study contributes to understanding how training, community engagement, institutional support, and technology integration are transformative in shaping the future of Saudi Arabia by nurturing a skilled, adaptable, and socially responsible citizenry.

Project description:ObjectiveDespite an extensive literature on efficiency, qualitative evidence on the drivers of hospital efficiency is scant. This study examined the factors that influence the efficiencies of health service provision in public hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and their potential remedies.DesignWe employed a qualitative design involving semi-structured interviews conducted between July and September 2019. Participants were purposively selected and included policymakers and hospital managers drawn from districts, regional and national levels. Data were analyzed in Nvivo 12 based on a thematic approach.SettingKey informants of Ministry of health in the KSA.ResultsRespondents identified a range of different factors across the community, facility and the wider health system that influence inefficiencies in public hospitals in KSA. Ineffective hospital management, lack of strategic planning and goals, weak administrative leadership, and absence of monitoring hospital performance was noted to have a profound impact on hospital efficiency. The conditions of healthcare staff in respect to both skills, authority and psychological factors were considered to influence the efficiency level. Further, lack of appropriate data for decision making due to the absence of an appropriate health informatics system was regarded as a factor of inefficiency. At the community level, respondents described inadequate information on the healthcare needs and expectations of patients and the wider community as significant barriers to the provision of efficient services. To improve hospital efficiencies, respondents recommended that service delivery decisions are informed by data on community health needs; capacity strengthening and effective supervision of hospital staff; and judicious resource allocation.ConclusionThe study demonstrates that inefficiencies in health services remain a critical challenge in public hospitals in KSA. Extensive awareness-raising and training on efficient resource utilization among key health systems stakeholders are imperative to improving hospital performance. More research is needed to strengthen knowledge on hospital efficiency in light of the limited data on the topic in KSA and the wider Gulf region.

Project description:BackgroundMore cancer survivors and a greater burden of long-term side effects have resulted from rising cancer incidence, improved treatment modalities, and younger age at cancer diagnosis. Treatment- related Infertility (TRI) is a well-known sequelae. This study looked at current oncofertility support and fertility preservation (FP) in men and women of reproductive age with cancer in Saudi Arabia, where there is little knowledge on the subject.MethodsA cross-sectional study included oncology patients of reproductive age from an academic hospital was conducted. Patients' characteristics, cancer type, treatment modalities and assessment of oncofertility support data were collected and examined to assess oncofertility support and potentially influencing factors.ResultsOur study included 135 patients (39.3% males and 60.7% females). Although 66.7% believed they were fertile at the time of diagnosis, and more than half planned to have children in the future, Unfortunately, only 37.8% have received fertility counseling, and only 17% have seen a fertility specialist. In male patients, the most common FP method was sperm cryopreservation (6.7%), while the majority of both genders (87.4%) did not use any FP method. Two-thirds of the patients are knowledgeable about TRI and FP methods. About half of the female patients (57.3%) were advised about the possibility of post-treatment amenorrhea while only 8.1% of the whole cohort received psychological support.ConclusionsDespite patients' satisfactory knowledge of TRI and FP, oncologists infrequently referred their patients to a specialized fertility service. More than half of our patients expressed a desire to have children in the future, but this desire was impeded by limited oncofertility care and FP procedures. Several factors influenced the knowledge of TRI, fertility counseling and FP. It is critical to incorporate oncofertility into management planning as it has a significant impact on patients' quality of life.

Project description:IntroductionCervical cancer is a highly prevalent disease among women worldwide. However, the advent of a vaccine against HPV, the main cause of the disease, has prevented its spread. The acceptability of the HPV vaccine to different sectors of the Saudi community has yet to be clarified. Since parents and teachers are major influencers in the decision-making process of vaccination for HPV, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of teachers and parents toward cervical cancer, HPV, and the HPV vaccine, and unraveled the factors that would influence recommending the vaccine.MethodsA cross sectional study was done among 927 individuals (373 teachers and 356 parents). A newly developed validated questionnaire was used to collect data on knowledge, attitude, and factors influencing cervical cancer, HPV, HPV vaccine. The relationship between different factors with knowledge and attitude were assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis.ResultsOf the study participants, 94% were females, with a median (Interquartile range) age of 38(31-44) years, 12.2% were teachers, 38.7% were parents and 49.1% were parents and teachers. The majority (78.5%) were married, and 75.6% had at least one child. Among those with children, 88.6% had at least one girl, and among those with girls, 72.2% had at least one girl aged between 10 and 18 years. The total median (IQR) knowledge score was 9 [(-5)-(-26)] and the total median (IQR) attitude score was 49 (43-56). The knowledge score significantly increased by receiving postgraduate education, working in the health or education sectors, if a person knew someone diagnosed with cervical cancer, having girls in the age group of 10-18 years, reading about medical issues or having previously heard about the HPV vaccine. The attitude score significantly increased by high knowledge score and decreased if the person has previously diagnosed with cervical cancer.ConclusionPhysician's recommendation and the amount of information on the HPV vaccine, opinions about vaccines in general, and government decrees are the main factors influencing decision on HPV vaccine Uptake. This study emphasizes the role of healthcare providers, awareness of cervical cancer, HPV and its vaccine, and social status, in favoring vaccine uptake in Saudi Arabia.

Project description:BackgroundThe funding and delivery of healthcare including dental care in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA, or Saudi Arabia) is undergoing a process of reform. To inform this process, it is important that policymakers are aware of the relationships between service use, specific types of use, and the factors that influence this. Currently, there is a paucity of research in this area in KSA that examines dental service use for checkups at a national level and none that examines differences in this use across regions or that examines explicitly the role of income.AimsThis study uses the most recent version of the Saudi Health Interview Survey (SHIS) to examine the relationships between the use of dental services for a checkup and socio-demographic characteristics of respondents. Particular focus is given to the differences between regions in service use and the role of socio-demographics within regions.MethodsData were taken from SHIS 2013. Descriptive statistics (means and standard errors) were used to characterize the sample. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between checkups in the past 12 months and a range of covariates including income and region. The analysis was repeated for sub-samples based on specific regions. No attempt was made to impute missing values.ResultsA sample of 7603 respondents provided complete data for analysis. Fifty-one per cent of the respondents were male, 29% were educated at least to degree level, 25% reported that they floss at least once per day, 69% reported that they brushed their teeth at least once per day, and 11% reported that they had visited the dentist for a checkup in the preceding 12 months. Logistic regression analyses revealed income, region, and oral hygiene habits to be among the significant determinants of the likelihood of dental checkup in the preceding 12 months. In logistic regression analyses at the regional level, different relationships were evident between checkups and socio-demographic characteristics across regions.ConclusionRegion and income are significant determinants of dental service use for checkups. Differences exist between regions in the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and the likelihood of getting checkups. Policy changes should reflect the potential differences they might have across regions for which the role of socio-demographic characteristics varies.

Project description:Background: Dermatology in healthcare is changed by technological advancements, patient awareness, and developing healthcare needs. In Saudi Arabia, choosing a dermatologist is influenced by various factors, including patient satisfaction, digital technology use, and the physician's characteristics and qualities. Purpose: The major aim of this research was to evaluate factors influencing patients' choice of dermatologists in Saudi Arabia, including past experiences, reputation, social media influence, and access to care. Methods: A comprehensive national survey was conducted in Saudi Arabia. The research included 1038 participants using stratified sampling, predominantly from the 18-25 age group (67.1%). The distribution covered all regions of Saudi Arabia, with a larger portion from the Central and Western regions. The survey included quantitative and qualitative questions, assessing factors such as previous experiences with dermatologists, the importance of physician reputation, the role of digital platforms, and access to care. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Studies (SPSS 22; IBM Corp., New York, NY, USA), with continuous variables expressed as mean ± standard deviation and categorical variables as percentages. Results: Our study highlighted a strong preference for dermatologists based on previous positive experiences (95.3%) and reputable dermatologists (95.2%). Factors like social media presence were less influential. Demographics matter, with younger and female participants favoring female doctors. The education level affects preference factors like ads, and the convenience of their location holds minimal sway. Recommendations from peers and healthcare professionals carry significant weight in the decision. Conclusions: Positive patient experiences and professional reputation suggest that these are the factors that affect patients' selection of a dermatologist the most. The research findings indicated that while digital platforms are important for information dissemination, they play a minimal role in the actual selection process. The findings can guide dermatologists and healthcare policymakers in enhancing patient-centered care and adapting to evolving patient preferences in the digital age.
