Child-to-Parent Violence and Abuse: A Scoping Review.

ABSTRACT: Child-to-parent violence and abuse (CPVA) is a pattern of behavior where a parent or carer is abused by a child they are caring for. The main body of work on CPVA is relatively recent and evolving at pace. This scoping review explores the characteristics of parents, carers, children, and young people in cases of CPVA, the characteristics of CPVA, and barriers to and facilitators of help-seeking in cases of CPVA. The scoping review did not exclude any studies on the basis of geographical location or date of the study. The databases Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, Medline, and PubMed were searched in August 2023, along with hand searches of key journals. A total of 145 reports were included in the review, selected for their relevance to the scoping review questions. The main findings were: (a) the field of CPVA is rapidly growing, doubling in the last decade but with a predominance of quantitative studies; (b) there is no agreed universal definition; (c) children and young people with disabilities; who identify as trans or nonbinary gender, or who are adopted or fostered, are almost completely absent from the existing research; (d) there is very limited research focusing on protective factors or on help-seeking.

Project description:IntroductionTechnology-facilitated sexual violence and abuse (TFSVA) refers to a range of behaviours in which digital technologies are used to facilitate both virtual and face-to-face sexual harm. The proliferation of smartphone usage and increasing internet penetration rates across the world have made it easier for individuals to become perpetrators and victims of TFSVA. Since empirical studies of TFSVA remain limited in the academic arena, and there is an absence of evidence to support the development of a standardised TFSVA measurement, this review aims to explore what TFSVA measurements are currently available and their potential use in measuring TFSVA.Methods and analysisThis scoping review will be structured according to the Joanna Briggs Institute recommended framework. Keywords related to 'technology', 'sexual violence' and 'measure' will be used. Any paper related to measurements of TFSVA will be included without limitation to any population or setting. A search will be conducted from database inception until May 2024 for published literature in English and Chinese electronic databases, which included PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, Index to Taiwan Periodical Literature and Ariti Library. Screening and study selection will be conducted by two independent reviewers. Data will be extracted and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. The PAGER (Patterns, Advances, Gaps, Evidence for practice and Research recommendations) Framework will be used to report the findings.Ethics and disseminationSince the scoping review methodology consists of reviewing and collecting data from publicly available materials, this study does not require ethics approval. This scoping review has the potential to serve as the most appropriate way to explore existing evidence related to this emerging phenomenon. The results of this review are expected to highlight various types of TFSVA measurement developed in different settings. Further work is required to develop measurements adapted for specific populations and tested to ensure acceptability and cultural competence. The results will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations.Review registrationThe protocol of this review was registered within the Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/Q5ETW) on 13 March 2024.

Project description:BackgroundRecent research suggests that children spend increasing amounts of time engaging in screen-based activities and less time outdoors in natural environments. There is a growing body of theory-driven literature evidencing that child screen use and exposure to nature are associated with wellbeing outcomes in contrasting ways. However, few studies have explored their combinative effects, and the relational family context has been largely overlooked.ObjectiveThis scoping review explored associations between early-late childhood nature exposure, screen use, and parent-child relations to identify research gaps and inform future research direction.MethodsThis review was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage methodological framework and other relevant guidelines for scoping reviews. A search of five electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE complete, ERIC, EMBASE, and Cochrane library) was conducted along with additional hand-searches from inception to 9/08/2024. Peer-reviewed articles published in English between 2012 and 2024 were included.ResultsA total of 390 articles were screened by title and abstract and full text review of 96 articles was conducted. Following additional searches (hand-search and reference lists), a total of 23 eligible articles were identified. Evidence is presented in tabular and textual form and described using qualitative thematic analysis. The synthesis revealed that the relevant body of research is novel, heterogenous, and fragmented. There are various pathways through which children's screen use and engagement with nature interact within the family context; however, research exploring their synchronous and bidirectional effects on relational family processes is limited.ConclusionFindings emphasize the importance of investigating children's screen use and engagement with nature from a relational paradigm. Future studies should explore the mechanisms underpinning the reciprocal influences of nature and screen use on dyadic family processes and relational outcomes across early-late childhood.
