Non-relativistic torque and Edelstein effect in non-collinear magnets.

ABSTRACT: The Edelstein effect is the origin of the spin-orbit torque: a current-induced torque that is used for the electrical control of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. This effect originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, which necessitates utilizing materials with heavy elements. Here, we show that in magnetic materials with non-collinear magnetic order, the Edelstein effect and, consequently, a current-induced torque can exist even in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling. Using group symmetry analysis, model calculations, and realistic simulations on selected compounds, we identify large classes of non-collinear magnet candidates and demonstrate that the current-driven torque is of similar magnitude as the celebrated spin-orbit torque in conventional transition metal structures. We also show that this torque can exist in an insulating material, which could allow for highly efficient electrical control of magnetic order.

Probing the spinor nature of electronic states in nanosize non-collinear magnets.

Project description:Non-collinear magnetization textures provide a route to novel device concepts in spintronics. These applications require laterally confined non-collinear magnets (NCM). A crucial aspect for potential applications is how the spatial proximity between the NCM and vacuum or another material impacts the magnetization texture on the nanoscale. We focus on a prototypical exchange-driven NCM given by the helical spin order of bilayer Fe on Cu(111). Spin-polarized scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and density functional theory reveal a nanosize- and proximity-driven modification of the electronic and magnetic structure of the NCM in interfacial contact with a ferromagnet or with vacuum. An intriguing non-collinearity between the local magnetization in the sample and the electronic magnetization probed above its surface results. It is a direct consequence of the spinor nature of electronic states in NCM. Our findings provide a possible route for advanced control of nanoscale spin textures by confinement.

Giant antidamping orbital torque originating from the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect in ferromagnetic heterostructures.

Project description:Enhancing the in-plane current-induced torque efficiency in inversion-symmetry-breaking ferromagnetic heterostructures is of both fundamental and practical interests for emerging magnetic memory device applications. Here, we present an interface-originated magnetoelectric effect, the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect, for realizing large torque efficiency in Pt/Co/SiO2/Pt films with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The key element is a pronounced Co 3d orbital splitting due to asymmetric orbital hybridization at the Pt/Co and Co/SiO2 interfaces, which not only stabilizes the PMA but also produces a large orbital torque upon the Co magnetization with current injection. The torque efficiency is found to be strongly magnetization direction- and temperature-dependent, and can reach up to 2.83 at room temperature, which is several times to one order of magnitude larger than those previously reported. This work highlights the active role of the orbital anisotropy for efficient torque generation and indicates a route for torque efficiency optimization through orbital engineering.

A gateway towards non-collinear spin processing using three-atom magnets with strong substrate coupling.

Project description:A cluster of a few magnetic atoms on the surface of a nonmagnetic substrate is one suitable realization of a bit for spin-based information technology. The prevalent approach to achieve magnetic stability is decoupling the cluster spin from substrate conduction electrons in order to suppress destabilizing spin-flips. However, this route entails less flexibility in tailoring the coupling between the bits needed for spin-processing. Here, we use a spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscope to write, read, and store spin information for hours in clusters of three atoms strongly coupled to a substrate featuring a cloud of non-collinearly polarized host atoms, a so-called non-collinear giant moment cluster. The giant moment cluster can be driven into a Kondo screened state by simply moving one of its atoms to a different site. Using the exceptional atomic tunability of the non-collinear substrate mediated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we propose a logical scheme for a four-state memory.Information technology based on few atom magnets requires both long spin-energy relaxation times and flexible inter-bit coupling. Here, the authors show routes to manipulate information in three-atom clusters strongly coupled to substrate electrons by exploiting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

Large spin-orbit torque efficiency enhanced by magnetic structure of collinear antiferromagnet IrMn.

Project description:Spin-orbit torque (SOT) offers promising approaches to developing energy-efficient memory devices by electric switching of magnetization. Compared to other SOT materials, metallic antiferromagnet (AFM) potentially allows the control of SOT through its magnetic structure. Here, combining the results from neutron diffraction and spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance experiments, we show that the magnetic structure of epitaxially grown L10-IrMn (a collinear AFM) is distinct from the widely presumed bulk one. It consists of twin domains, with the spin axes orienting toward [111] and [-111], respectively. This unconventional magnetic structure is responsible for much larger SOT efficiencies up to 0.60 ± 0.04, compared to 0.083 ± 0.002 for the polycrystalline IrMn. Furthermore, we reveal that this magnetic structure induces a large isotropic bulk contribution and a comparable anisotropic interfacial contribution to the SOT efficiency. Our findings shed light on the critical roles of bulk and interfacial antiferromagnetism to SOT generated by metallic AFM.

Orbitally dominated Rashba-Edelstein effect in noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnets.

Project description:Efficient manipulation of magnetic order with electric current pulses is desirable for achieving fast spintronic devices. The Rashba-Edelstein effect, wherein spin polarization is electrically induced in noncentrosymmetric systems, provides a mean to achieve staggered spin-orbit torques. Initially predicted for spin, its orbital counterpart has been disregarded up to now. Here we report a generalized Rashba-Edelstein effect, which generates not only spin polarization but also orbital polarization, which we find to be far from being negligible. We show that the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect does not require spin-orbit coupling to exist. We present first-principles calculations of the frequency-dependent spin and orbital Rashba-Edelstein tensors for the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnets CuMnAs and Mn[Formula: see text]Au. We show that the electrically induced local magnetization can exhibit Rashba-like or Dresselhaus-like symmetries, depending on the magnetic configuration. We compute sizable induced magnetizations at optical frequencies, which suggest that electric-field driven switching could be achieved at much higher frequencies.

Effect of the Pt buffer layer on perpendicular exchange bias based on collinear/non-collinear coupling in a Cr2O3/Co3Pt interface.

Project description:In this study, we fabricated a Cr2O3 (0001) film without and with a Pt buffer layer and investigated its effect on perpendicular exchange coupling in a Cr2O3/Co3Pt interface. The results showed that the exchange bias field (μ0Hex) and blocking temperature (TB) of a Cr2O3 film without and with Pt were very different. The Cr2O3 film without Pt had a lower μ0Hex of 176 Oe and a lower TB of 75 K, whereas that with Pt had a higher μ0Hex of 436 Oe and a higher TB of 150 K. We discussed this difference in μ0Hex and TB values based on collinear/non-collinear coupling in a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interface using Meiklejohn and Bean's exchange anisotropy model.

Phase biasing of a Josephson junction using Rashba-Edelstein effect.

Project description:A charge-current-induced shift in the spin-locked Fermi surface leads to a non-equilibrium spin density at a Rashba interface, commonly known as the Rashba-Edelstein effect. Since this is an intrinsically interfacial property, direct detection of the spin moment is difficult. Here we demonstrate that a planar Josephson Junction, realized by placing two closely spaced superconducting electrodes over a Rashba interface, allows for a direct detection of the spin moment as an additional phase in the junction. Asymmetric Fraunhofer patterns obtained for Nb-(Pt/Cu)-Nb nano-junctions, due to the locking of Rashba-Edelstein spin moment to the flux quantum in the junction, provide clear signatures of this effect. This simple experiment offers a fresh perspective on direct detection of spin polarization induced by various spin-orbit effects. In addition, this platform also offers a magnetic-field-controlled phase biasing mechanism in conjunction with the Rashba-Edelstein spin-orbit effect for superconducting quantum circuits.

Switching of a large anomalous Hall effect between metamagnetic phases of a non-collinear antiferromagnet.

Project description:The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which in long-range ordered ferromagnets appears as a voltage transverse to the current and usually is proportional to the magnetization, often is believed to be of negligible size in antiferromagnets due to their low uniform magnetization. However, recent experiments and theory have demonstrated that certain antiferromagnets with a non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments exhibit a sizeable spontaneous AHE at zero field due to a non-vanishing Berry curvature arising from the quantum mechanical phase of the electron's wave functions. Here we show that antiferromagnetic Mn5Si3 single crystals exibit a large AHE which is strongly anisotropic and shows multiple transitions with sign changes at different magnetic fields due to field-induced rearrangements of the magnetic structure despite only tiny variations of the total magnetization. The presence of multiple non-collinear magnetic phases offers the unique possiblity to explore the details of the AHE and the sensitivity of the Hall effect on the details of the magnetic texture.

Controlling spin current polarization through non-collinear antiferromagnetism.

Project description:The interconversion of charge and spin currents via spin-Hall effect is essential for spintronics. Energy-efficient and deterministic switching of magnetization can be achieved when spin polarizations of these spin currents are collinear with the magnetization. However, symmetry conditions generally restrict spin polarizations to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced. Here, we show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn3GaN/permalloy heterostructures can generate unconventional spin-orbit torques at room temperature corresponding to out-of-plane and Dresselhaus-like spin polarizations which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spin-orbit torque, enabling high-efficient antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Room-temperature tetragonal non-collinear Heusler antiferromagnet Pt2MnGa.

Project description:Antiferromagnetic spintronics is a rapidly growing field, which actively introduces new principles of magnetic storage. Despite that, most applications have been suggested for collinear antiferromagnets. In this study, we consider an alternative mechanism based on long-range helical order, which allows for direct manipulation of the helicity vector. As the helicity of long-range homogeneous spirals is typically fixed by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, bi-stable spirals (left- and right-handed) are rare. Here, we report a non-collinear room-temperature antiferromagnet in the tetragonal Heusler group. Neutron diffraction reveals a long-period helix propagating along its tetragonal axis. Ab-initio analysis suggests its pure exchange origin and explains its helical character resulting from a large basal plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The actual energy barrier between the left- and right-handed spirals is relatively small and might be easily overcome by magnetic pulse, suggesting Pt2MnGa as a potential candidate for non-volatile magnetic memory.
