Robust chelated lead octahedron surface for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

ABSTRACT: PbI₆ octahedron as a fundamental framework endows the perovskite with excellent photoelectric properties, but also the defective and flimsy surface. Here, we report that the treatment of perovskite surface by bidentate ligands molecules N, N'-Dimethyl-1,2-ethanediamine can in-situ form a lead iodide chelates layer with excellently robust chelated lead octahedron, leading to effectively stabilize and passivate the underlying perovskite. The strong chelation with the lead enables the surface to largely inhibit the defects generation, iodide ion migration and skeleton collapse under external stimuli. It also prolongs the carrier lifetime and adjusts the surface energy-level of perovskite. The resultant perovskite solar cells deliver a power conversion efficiency of 25.7% (certified 25.04%) and retain >90% of their initial value after almost 1000 hours aging at maximum power point under simulated AM1.5 illumination.

Surface modulation for highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Defects formed by halide ion escape and wettability of the perovskite absorber are essential limiting factors in achieving high performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a series of ionic organic modulators are designed to contain halide anions to prevent defect formation and improve the surface tension of the perovskite absorber. It was found that the surface modulator containing Br anions is the most effective one due to its capability in bonding with the undercoordinated Pb2+ ions to reduce charge recombination. Moreover, this surface modulator effectively creates a suitable energy level between the perovskite and hole transport layer to promote carrier transfer. In addition, the surface modulator forms a chemisorbed capping layer on the perovskite surface to improve its hydrophobicity. As a result, the efficiency of PSCs based on surface modulators containing Br anion enhances to 23.32% from 21.08% of the control device. The efficiency of unencapsulated PSCs with a surface modulator retains 75.42% of its initial value under about 35% humidity stored in the air for 28 days, while the control device only maintained 44.49% of its initial efficiency. The excellent stability originates from the hydrophobic perovskite surface after capping the surface modulator.

Stable and Lead-Safe Polyphenol-Encapsulated Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Lead (Pb) halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit impressive power conversion efficiencies close to those of their silicon counterparts. However, they suffer from moisture instability and Pb safety concerns. Previous studies have endeavoured to address these issues independently, yielding minimal advancements. Here, a general nanoencapsulation platform using natural polyphenols is reported for Pb-halide PSCs that simultaneously addresses both challenges. The polyphenol-based encapsulant is solution-processable, inexpensive (≈1.6 USD m-2), and requires only 5 min for the entire process, highlighting its potential scalability. The encapsulated devices with a power conversion efficiency of 20.7% retained up to 80% of their peak performance for 2000 h and up to 70% for 7000 h. Under simulated rainfall conditions, the encapsulant rich in catechol groups captures the Pb ions released from the degraded perovskites via coordination, keeping the Pb levels within the safe drinking water threshold of 15 ppb.

Perovskite seeding growth of formamidinium-lead-iodide-based perovskites for efficient and stable solar cells.

Project description:Formamidinium-lead-iodide (FAPbI3)-based perovskites with bandgap below 1.55 eV are of interest for photovoltaics in view of their close-to-ideal bandgap. Record-performance FAPbI3-based solar cells have relied on fabrication via the sequential-deposition method; however, these devices exhibit unstable output under illumination due to the difficulty of incorporating cesium cations (stabilizer) in sequentially deposited films. Here we devise a perovskite seeding method that efficiently incorporates cesium and beneficially modulates perovskite crystallization. First, perovskite seed crystals are embedded in the PbI2 film. The perovskite seeds serve as cesium sources and act as nuclei to facilitate crystallization during the formation of perovskite. Perovskite films with perovskite seeding growth exhibit a lowered trap density, and the resulting planar solar cells achieve stabilized efficiency of 21.5% with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.13 V and a fill factor that exceeds 80%. The Cs-containing FAPbI3-based devices show a striking improvement in operational stability and retain 60% of their initial efficiency after 140 h operation under one sun illumination.

Highly stable and efficient all-inorganic lead-free perovskite solar cells with native-oxide passivation.

Project description:There has been an urgent need to eliminate toxic lead from the prevailing halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the current lead-free PSCs are still plagued with the critical issues of low efficiency and poor stability. This is primarily due to their inadequate photovoltaic properties and chemical stability. Herein we demonstrate the use of the lead-free, all-inorganic cesium tin-germanium triiodide (CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3) solid-solution perovskite as the light absorber in PSCs, delivering promising efficiency of up to 7.11%. More importantly, these PSCs show very high stability, with less than 10% decay in efficiency after 500 h of continuous operation in N2 atmosphere under one-sun illumination. The key to this striking performance of these PSCs is the formation of a full-coverage, stable native-oxide layer, which fully encapsulates and passivates the perovskite surfaces. The native-oxide passivation approach reported here represents an alternate avenue for boosting the efficiency and stability of lead-free PSCs.

Surface chelation of cesium halide perovskite by dithiocarbamate for efficient and stable solar cells.

Project description:Surface engineering has been shown critical for the success of perovskite solar cells by passivating the surface enriched defects and mobile species. The discovery of surface modulators with superior interaction strength to perovskite is of paramount importance since they can retain reliable passivation under various environments. Here, we report a chelation strategy for surface engineering of CsPbI2Br perovskite, in which dithiocarbamate molecules can be coordinate to surface Pb sites via strong bidentate chelating bonding. Such chelated CsPbI2Br perovskite can realize excellent passivation of surface under-coordinated defects, reaching a champion power conversion efficiency of 17.03% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.37 V of CsPbI2Br solar cells. More importantly, our chelation strategy enabled excellent device stability by maintaining 98% of their initial efficiency for over 1400 h in ambient condition. Our findings provide scientific insights on the surface engineering of perovskite that can facilitate the further development and application of perovskite optoelectronics.

Interfacial Contact Passivation for Efficient and Stable Cesium-Formamidinium Double-Cation Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved extremely high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of over 25%, but practical application still requires further improvement in the long-term stability of the device. Herein, we present an in situ interfacial contact passivation strategy to reduce the interfacial defects and extraction losses between the hole transporting layer and perovskite. The existence of PbS promotes the crystallization of perovskite, passivates the interface and grain boundary defects, and reduces the nonradiation recombination, thereby leading to a champion PCE of 21.07% with reduced hysteresis, which is one of the best results for the methylammonium (MA)-free, cesium formamidinium double-cation lead-based PSCs. Moreover, the unencapsulated device retains more than 93% and 82% of its original efficiencies after 1 year's storage under ambient conditions and thermal aging at 85°C for 1,000 h in a nitrogen atmosphere, likely due to the usage of MA-free perovskite and the enhanced surface hydrophobicity.

Synergetic surface charge transfer doping and passivation toward high efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received much attention in the last few years due to the high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Generally, perovskite/charge transport layer interface and the defects at the surface and grain boundaries of perovskite film are important factors for the efficiency and stability of PSCs. Herein, we employ an extended benzopentafulvalenes compound (FDC-2-5Cl) with electron-withdrawing pentachlorophenyl group and favorable energy level as charge transfer molecule to treat the perovskite surface. The FDC-2-5Cl with pentachlorophenyl group could accept the electrons from perovskite as a p-type dopant, and passivate the surface defects. The p-type doping effect of FDC-2-5Cl on perovskite surface induced band bending at perovskite surface, which improves the hole extraction from perovskite. As a result, the PSC with FDC-2-5Cl treatment achieves a PCE of 21.16% with an enhanced open-circuit voltage (V oc) of 1.14 V and outstanding long-term stability.

Efficient and Moisture-Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells via n-Type Small-Molecule-Assisted Surface Treatment.

Project description:Defect states at the surface and grain boundaries of perovskite films have been known to be major determinants impairing the optoelectrical properties of perovskite films and the stability of perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). Herein, an n-type conjugated small-molecule additive based on fused-unit dithienothiophen[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole-core (JY16) is developed for efficient and stable PeSCs, where JY16 possesses the same backbone as the widely used Y6 but with long-linear n-hexadecyl side chains rather than branched side chains. Upon introducing JY16 into the perovskite films, the electron-donating functional groups of JY16 passivate defect states in perovskite films and increase the grain size of perovskite films through Lewis acid-base interactions. Compared to Y6, JY16 exhibits superior charge mobility owing to its molecular packing ability and prevents decomposition of perovskite films under moisture conditions owing to their hydrophobic characteristics, improving the charge extraction ability and moisture stability of PeSCs. Consequently, the PeSC with JY16 shows a high power conversion efficiency of 21.35%, which is higher than those of the PeSC with Y6 (20.12%) and without any additive (18.12%), and outstanding moisture stability under 25% relative humidity, without encapsulation. The proposed organic semiconducting additive will prove to be crucial for achieving highly efficient and moisture stable PeSCs.

Surface engineering of perovskite films for efficient solar cells.

Project description:It is critical to prepare smooth and dense perovskite films for the fabrication of high efficiency perovskite solar cells. However, solution casting process often results in films with pinhole formation and incomplete surface coverage. Herein, we demonstrate a fast and efficient vacuum deposition method to optimize the surface morphology of solution-based perovskite films. The obtained planar devices exhibit an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.42% with a standard deviation of ±2.15% and best efficiency of 15.57%. Furthermore, the devices also show excellent stability of over 30 days with a slight degradation <9% when stored under ambient conditions. We also investigated the effect of vacuum deposition thickness on the electron transportation and overall performance of the devices. This work provides a versatile approach to prepare high-quality perovskite films and paves a way for high-performance and stable perovskite photovoltaic devices.

NiO/Perovskite Heterojunction Contact Engineering for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Recent research shows that the interface state in perovskite solar cells is the main factor which affects the stability and performance of the device, and interface engineering including strain engineering is an effective method to solve this issue. In this work, a CsBr buffer layer is inserted between NiO x hole transport layer and perovskite layer to relieve the lattice mismatch induced interface stress and induce more ordered crystal growth. The experimental and theoretical results show that the addition of the CsBr buffer layer optimizes the interface between the perovskite absorber layer and the NiO x hole transport layer, reduces interface defects and traps, and enhances the hole extraction/transfer. The experimental results show that the power conversion efficiency of optimal device reaches up to 19.7% which is significantly higher than the efficiency of the device without the CsBr buffer layer. Meanwhile, the device stability is also improved. This work provides a deep understanding of the NiO x /perovskite interface and provides a new strategy for interface optimization.
