Project description:Hydrogen is often regarded as an ideal energy carrier. Its use in energy conversion devices does in fact not produce any pollutants. However, due to challenges related to its transportation and storage, liquid hydrogen carriers are being investigated. Among the liquid hydrogen carriers, ammonia is considered very promising because it is easy to store and transport, and its conversion to hydrogen has only nitrogen as a byproduct. This work focuses on a review of the latest results of studies dealing with ammonia decomposition for hydrogen production. After a general introduction to the topic, this review specifically focuses on works presenting results of membrane reactors for ammonia decomposition, particularly describing the different reactor configurations and operating conditions, membrane properties, catalysts, and purification steps that are required to achieve pure hydrogen for fuel cell applications.

Project description:The methylcyclohexane (MCH)-toluene cycle is a promising liquid organic hydride system as a hydrogen carrier. Generally, MCH dehydrogenation has been conducted over Pt-supported catalysts, for which it requires temperatures higher than 623 K because of its endothermic nature. For this study, an electric field was applied to Pt/TiO2 catalyst to promote MCH dehydrogenation at low temperatures. Selective dehydrogenation was achieved with the electric field application exceeding thermodynamic equilibrium, even at 423 K. With the electric field, "inverse" kinetic isotope effect (KIE) was observed by accelerated proton collision with MCH on the Pt/TiO2 catalyst. Moreover, Pt/TiO2 catalyst showed no methane by-production and less coke formation during MCH dehydrogenation. DRIFTS and XPS measurements revealed that electron donation from TiO2 to Pt weakened the interaction between catalyst surface and π-coordination of toluene. Results show that the electric field facilitated MCH dehydrogenation without methane and coke by-production over Pt/TiO2 catalyst.

Project description:Liquid organic hydrides are regarded as promising for use as hydrogen carriers via the methylcyclohexane (MCH)-toluene-hydrogen cycle. Because of the endothermic nature of MCH dehydrogenation, the reaction is usually conducted at temperatures higher than 623 K. In this work, low-temperature catalytic MCH dehydrogenation was demonstrated over 3 wt% Pt/CeO2 catalyst by application of electric field across a fixed-bed flow reactor. Results show that a high conversion of MCH beyond thermodynamic equilibrium was achieved even at 423 K. Kinetic analyses exhibited a positive correlation of hydrogen to the reaction rates and an "inverse" kinetic isotope effect (KIE), suggesting that accelerated proton hopping with the H atoms of MCH promotes the reaction. Operando analyses and DFT calculation proved that the reverse reaction (i.e. toluene hydrogenation) was suppressed by the facilitation of toluene desorption in the electric field. The electric field promoted MCH dehydrogenation by surface proton hopping, even at low temperatures with an irreversible pathway.

Project description:Aqueous ammonium ion batteries are regarded as eco-friendly and sustainable energy storage systems. And applicable host for NH4+ in aqueous solution is always in the process of development. On the basis of density functional theory calculations, the excellent performance of NH4+ insertion in Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) is proposed, especially for copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF). In this work, we prove the outstanding cycling and rate performance of CuHCF via electrochemical analyses, delivering no capacity fading during ultra-long cycles of 3000 times and high capacity retention of 93.6% at 50 C. One of main contributions to superior performance from highly reversible redox reaction and structural change is verified during the ammoniation/de-ammoniation progresses. More importantly, we propose the NH4+ diffusion mechanism in CuHCF based on continuous formation and fracture of hydrogen bonds from a joint theoretical and experimental study, which is another essential reason for rapid charge transfer and superior NH4+ storage. Lastly, a full cell by coupling CuHCF cathode and polyaniline anode is constructed to explore the practical application of CuHCF. In brief, the outstanding aqueous NH4+ storage in cubic PBAs creates a blueprint for fast and sustainable energy storage.

Project description:Catalytic steam reforming of methane for hydrogen production proceeds even at 473 K over 1 wt% Pd/CeO2 catalyst in an electric field, thanks to the surface protonics. Kinetic analyses demonstrated the synergetic effect between catalytic reaction and electric field, revealing strengthened water pressure dependence of the reaction rate when applying an electric field, with one-third the apparent activation energy at the lower reaction temperature range. Operando-IR measurements revealed that proton conduction via adsorbed water on the catalyst surface occurred during electric field application. Methane was activated by proton collision at the Pd-CeO2 interface, based on the inverse kinetic isotope effect. Proton conduction on the catalyst surface plays an important role in methane activation at low temperature. This report is the first describing promotion of the catalytic reaction by surface protonics.

Project description:Catalytic NH3 synthesis and decomposition offer a new promising way to store and transport renewable energy in the form of NH3 from remote or offshore sites to industrial plants. To use NH3 as a hydrogen carrier, it is important to understand the catalytic functionality of NH3 decomposition reactions at an atomic level. Here, we report for the first time that Ru species confined in a 13X zeolite cavity display the highest specific catalytic activity of over 4000 h-1 for the NH3 decomposition with a lower activation barrier, compared to most reported catalytic materials in the literature. Mechanistic and modeling studies clearly indicate that the N-H bond of NH3 is ruptured heterolytically by the frustrated Lewis pair of Ruδ+-Oδ- in the zeolite identified by synchrotron X-rays and neutron powder diffraction with Rietveld refinement as well as other characterization techniques including solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed analysis. This contrasts with the homolytic cleavage of N-H displayed by metal nanoparticles. Our work reveals the unprecedented unique behavior of cooperative frustrated Lewis pairs created by the metal species on the internal zeolite surface, resulting in a dynamic hydrogen shuttling from NH3 to regenerate framework Brønsted acid sites that eventually are converted to molecular hydrogen.

Project description:Photocatalytic production from water is considered an effective solution to fossil fuel-related environmental concerns, and photocatalyst surface science holds a significant interest in balancing photocatalysts' stability and activity. We propose a plasma-wind method to tune the surface properties of a photocatalyst with an amorphous structure. Theoretical calculation shows that the amorphous surface structure can cause an unsaturated coordination environment to adjust the electron distribution, forming more adsorption sites. Thus, the photocatalyst with a crystal-amorphous (C-A) interface can strengthen light absorption, harvest photo-induced electrons, and enrich the active sites, which help improve hydrogen yield. As a proof of concept, with indium sulfide (In2S3) nanosheets used as the catalyst, an impressive hydrogen production rate up to 457.35 μmol cm-2 h-1 has been achieved. Moreover, after plasma-assisted treatment, In2S3 with a C-A interface can produce hydrogen from water under natural outdoor conditions. Following a six-hour test, the rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is found to be 400.50 μmol cm-2 g-1, which demonstrates that a catalyst prepared through plasma treatment is both effective and highly practical.

Project description:Facet-dependent catalytic activity of hard materials such as metals and metal oxides is well recognized in previous works. However, it has rarely been established for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), possibly because the soft crystals of MOFs are conceptually different from the hard solids. In this work, the surface structure of the MOF NH2-MIL-125(Ti) has been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the first time. These calculations predict that the {110} facet has a surface energy of 1.18 J m-2, which is superior to those of the {001}, {100} and {111} facets. This difference can be attributed to the larger percentage of exposed metal clusters, which can act as active sites in catalysis. Thus, we have devised and successfully obtained a series of nanoscaled NH2-MIL-125(Ti) MOFs with controlled facets both experimentally and theoretically. The sample containing the {110} facet exhibits the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production activity and apparent quantum yield, which are approximately three times those of the sample with a dominant {111} facet.

Project description:The first experimental study of the low-temperature kinetics of the gas-phase reaction between NH2 and NO has been performed. A pulsed laser photolysis-laser-induced fluorescence technique was used to create and monitor the temporal decay of NH2 in the presence of NO. Measurements were carried out over the temperature range of 24-106 K, with the low temperatures achieved using a pulsed Laval nozzle expansion. The negative temperature dependence of the reaction rate coefficient observed at higher temperatures in the literature continues at these lower temperatures, with the rate coefficient reaching 3.5 × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at T = 26 K. Ab initio calculations of the potential energy surface were combined with rate theory calculations using the MESMER software package in order to calculate and predict rate coefficients and branching ratios over a wide range of temperatures, which are largely consistent with experimentally determined literature values. These theoretical calculations indicate that at the low temperatures investigated for this reaction, only one product channel producing N2 + H2O is important. The rate coefficients determined in this study were used in a gas-phase astrochemical model. Models were run over a range of physical conditions appropriate for cold to warm molecular clouds (10 to 30 K; 104 to 106 cm-3), resulting in only minor changes (<1%) to the abundances of NH2 and NO at steady state. Hence, despite the observed increase in the rate at low temperatures, this mechanism is not a dominant loss mechanism for either NH2 or NO under dark cloud conditions.

Project description:The decomposition of methane has been chosen as an alternative method for producing hydrogen. In this study, 20 % Fe was used as the active metal part of the catalyst. To better comprehend the impact of the supporting catalytic properties, alumina and titania-alumina composite were investigated as supports. Iron-based catalysts were prepared by impregnation method and then calcined at different temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 800 °C). The catalysts were examined at 800 °C under atmospheric pressure with a 15 mL/min total flow rate and 2 : 1 CH4 to N2 feed ratio. The textural and morphological characteristics of the fresh calcined and spent catalysts were investigated. The catalytic activity and stability data demonstrated that Fe supported over TiO2-Al2O3 calcined at 500 °C performed the best of all evaluated catalysts with a more than 80 % hydrogen yield. The Raman spectra result showed that graphitic carbon was produced for all used titanium dioxide catalysts. Moreover, according to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results, the carbon deposited on the catalysts' surface is carbon nanotubes (CNT).
