Evaluating the perceived affective qualities of urban soundscapes through audiovisual experiments.

ABSTRACT: The study of the perceived affective qualities (PAQs) in soundscape assessments have increased in recent years, with methods varying from in-situ to laboratory. Through technological advances, virtual reality (VR) has facilitated evaluations of multiple locations in the same experiment. In this paper, VR reproductions of different urban sites were presented in an online and laboratory environment testing three locations in Greater Manchester ('Park', 'Plaza', and pedestrian 'Street') in two population densities (empty and busy) using ISO/TS 12913-2 (2018) soundscape PAQs. The studied areas had audio and video recordings prepared for 360 video and binaural audio VR reproductions. The aims were to observe population density effects within locations (Wilcoxon test) and variations between locations (Mann-Whitney U test) within methods. Population density and comparisons among locations demonstrated a significant effect on most PAQs. Results also suggested that big cities can present homogenous sounds, composing a 'blended' urban soundscape, independently of functionality. These findings can support urban design in a low-cost approach, where urban planners can test different scenarios and interventions.

Project description:Composers often pick specific instruments to convey a given emotional tone in their music, partly due to their expressive possibilities, but also due to their timbres in specific registers and at given dynamic markings. Of interest to both music psychology and music informatics from a computational point of view is the relation between the acoustic properties that give rise to the timbre at a given pitch and the perceived emotional quality of the tone. Musician and nonmusician listeners were presented with 137 tones produced at a fixed dynamic marking (forte) playing tones at pitch class D# across each instrument's entire pitch range and with different playing techniques for standard orchestral instruments drawn from the brass, woodwind, string, and pitched percussion families. They rated each tone on six analogical-categorical scales in terms of emotional valence (positive/negative and pleasant/unpleasant), energy arousal (awake/tired), tension arousal (excited/calm), preference (like/dislike), and familiarity. Linear mixed models revealed interactive effects of musical training, instrument family, and pitch register, with non-linear relations between pitch register and several dependent variables. Twenty-three audio descriptors from the Timbre Toolbox were computed for each sound and analyzed in two ways: linear partial least squares regression (PLSR) and nonlinear artificial neural net modeling. These two analyses converged in terms of the importance of various spectral, temporal, and spectrotemporal audio descriptors in explaining the emotion ratings, but some differences also emerged. Different combinations of audio descriptors make major contributions to the three emotion dimensions, suggesting that they are carried by distinct acoustic properties. Valence is more positive with lower spectral slopes, a greater emergence of strong partials, and an amplitude envelope with a sharper attack and earlier decay. Higher tension arousal is carried by brighter sounds, more spectral variation and more gentle attacks. Greater energy arousal is associated with brighter sounds, with higher spectral centroids and slower decrease of the spectral slope, as well as with greater spectral emergence. The divergences between linear and nonlinear approaches are discussed.

Project description:Discrimination is a type of social adversity defined as unfair treatment and prejudice against individuals due to membership of a specific group. Discrimination has been linked to several age-related outcomes such as cognitive decline, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. However, the molecular drivers to these observations are poorly understood. Social adverse factors have been associated with proinflammatory and interferon gene expression, a phenomenon described as Conserved Transcriptome Response to Adversity. It is not known whether there are additional genes whose transcription is associated with exposure to discrimination among both African American and White adults. In this study, we have examined how perceived discrimination in African American and White adults affects genome-wide transcriptome differences using RNA sequencing. Perceived discrimination was measured based on responses to lifetime discrimination and racial discrimination questionnaires. Differential gene expression and pathway analysis was conducted in a cohort (N=59) stratified by race, sex, and discrimination exposure. We found that there were 28 significantly differentially expressed genes associated with high discrimination exposure in African American adults when compared to White adults with high discrimination exposure. The most significantly upregulated genes among African Americans with high discrimination exposure were related to immune function immunoglobulin lambda variable 2-11 (IGLV2-11), S100 calcium binding protein B (S100B), immunoglobulin kappa variable 3-20 (IGKV3-20), immunoglobulin kappa variable 4-1 (IGKV4-1); the most significantly downregulated genes were associated with immune modulation and cancer, lung cancer associated transcript 1 (LUCAT1), thrombospondin 1 (THBS1), and actin related protein 2/3 complex inhibitor (ARPIN). In addition, the most significantly upregulated Gene Ontology (GO) biological process among African American men with high exposure to discrimination compared to White male adults with high exposure to discrimination was regulation of cytokine biosynthetic processes. Conversely, immune response was the most significantly downregulated GO biological process among African American women with high discrimination exposure compared White women with high discrimination exposure. Understanding the biological pathways through which adverse social factors like discrimination affect gene expression will be critical in advancing knowledge of age-related health disparities.
