In 1997, an epizootic in Taiwan, Province of China, was caused by a type O foot-and-mouth disease virus which infected pigs but not cattle. The virus had an altered 3A protein, which harbored a 10-amino-acid deletion and a series of substitutions. Here we show that this deletion is present in the earliest type O virus examined from the region (from 1970), whereas substitutions surrounding the deletion accumulated over the last 29 years.
