Family, twin, and adoption studies have demonstrated a significant genetic contribution to the etiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Pharmacological, neuroimaging, and animal-model findings suggest imbalances in monoaminergic (dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic) neurotransmission in ADHD.
