Legionnaires' disease is a potentially lethal pneumonia that is primarily due to infection by the species Legionella pneumophila, although more than 40 other species are known. Certain L. pneumophila subgroups, particularly serogroup 1, are associated with the majority of the epidemics. The genetic bases for these differences in virulence have not been determined.
