Evidence of hollow golden cages.

ABSTRACT: The fullerenes are the first "free-standing" elemental hollow cages identified by spectroscopy experiments and synthesized in the bulk. Here, we report experimental and theoretical evidence of hollow cages consisting of pure metal atoms, Au(n)(-) (n = 16-18); to our knowledge, free-standing metal hollow cages have not been previously detected in the laboratory. These hollow golden cages ("bucky gold") have an average diameter >5.5 A, which can easily accommodate one guest atom inside.

Stabilization of golden cages by encapsulation of a single transition metal atom.

Project description:Golden cage-doped nanoclusters have attracted great attention in the past decade due to their remarkable electronic, optical and catalytic properties. However, the structures of large golden cage doped with Mo and Tc are still not well known because of the challenges in global structural searches. Here, we report anionic and neutral golden cage doped with a transition metal atom MAu16 (M = Mo and Tc) using Saunders 'Kick' stochastic automation search method associated with density-functional theory (DFT) calculation (SK-DFT). The geometric structures and electronic properties of the doped clusters, MAu16q (M = Mo and Tc; q = 0 and -1), are investigated by means of DFT theoretical calculations. Our calculations confirm that the 4d transition metals Mo and Tc can be stably encapsulated in the Au16- cage, forming three different configurations, i.e. endohedral cages, planar structures and exohedral derivatives. The ground-state structures of endohedral cages C2v Mo@Au16--(a) and C1 Tc@Au16--(b) exhibit a marked stability, as judged by their high binding energy per atom (greater than 2.46 eV), doping energy (0.29 eV) as well as a large HOMO-LUMO gap (greater than 0.40 eV). The predicted photoelectron spectra should aid in future experimental characterization of MAu16- (M = Mo and Tc).

Transformation of Imine Cages into Hydrocarbon Cages.

Project description:In contrast to organic cages which are formed by exploiting dynamic covalent chemistry, such as boronic ester cages, imine cages, or disulfide cages, those with a fully carbonaceous backbone are rarer. With the exception of alkyne metathesis based approaches, the vast majority of hydrocarbon cages need to be synthesized by kinetically controlled bond formation. This strategy implies a multiple step synthesis and no correction mechanism in the final macrocyclization step, both of which are responsible for low overall yields. Whereas for smaller cages the intrinsic drawbacks are not always obvious, larger cages are seldom synthesized in yields beyond a few tenths of a percent. Presented herein is a three-step method to convert imine cages into hydrocarbon cages. The method has been successfully applied to even larger structures such as derivatives of C72 H72 , an unknown cage suggested by Fritz Vögtle more than 20 years ago.

Golden and Silver-Golden Chitosan Hydrogels and Fabrics Modified with Golden Chitosan Hydrogels.

Project description:Golden and silver-golden chitosan hydrogels and hydrogel-modified textiles of potential biomedical applications are investigated in this work. The hydrogels are formed by reactions of chitosan with HAuCl4·xH2O. For above the critical concentration of chitosan (c*), chitosan-Au hydrogels were prepared. For chitosan concentrations lower than c*, chitosan-Au nano- and microgels were formed. To characterise chitosan-Au structures, sol-gel analysis, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering were performed. Au concentration in the hydrogels was determined by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Colloidal chitosan-Au solutions were used for the modification of fabrics. The Au content in the modified fabrics was quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer was used to analyse the samples. Reflectance spectrophotometry was applied to examine the colour of the fabrics. The formation of chitosan-Au-Ag hydrogels by the competitive reaction of Au and Ag ions with the chitosan macromolecules is reported.

First molecular evidence of Hepatozoon canis infection in red foxes and golden jackals from Hungary.

Project description:BackgroundRecently, Hepatozoon canis infection has been detected among shepherd, hunting and stray dogs in the southern part of Hungary, which is considered to be free of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and close to the border with Croatia. The aim of this study was to acquire information on the possibility that red foxes and/or golden jackals could play a role in the appearance and spread of H. canis in Hungary.MethodsA conventional PCR was used to amplify a 666 bp long fragment of the Hepatozoon 18S rRNA gene from blood samples collected from 334 foxes shot in 231 locations in 16 counties and 15 golden jackals shot in 9 locations in two southwestern counties close to Croatia. A second PCR assay was performed in some of the samples positive by the first PCR to amplify a larger segment (approximately 1500 bp) of the 18S rRNA gene of Hepatozoon spp. for further phylogenetic analysis.ResultsHepatozoon infection was detected in canids shot in 30 locations and 9 counties. Altogether 26 foxes (8.0%, 95% CI: 5-11%) and 9 jackals (60%, 95% CI: 33-81%) were PCR positive. Hepatozoon canis sequences were obtained from 12 foxes and 7 jackals. DNA sequences from 16 animals were 99-100% similar to H. canis from Croatian foxes or dogs while two of the sequences were 99% similar to an Italian fox. Half (13/26) of the infected red foxes and all golden jackals were shot in the two southwestern counties.ConclusionsThis is the first report on molecular evidence of H. canis in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and golden jackals (Canis aureus) from Hungary, which is considered free from the tick vector of H. canis, R. sanguineus. Although no R. sanguineus sensu lato had been found on infected or non-infected wild canids, the detection of authochnous canine hepatozoonosis in Hungary might imply that the range of R. sanguineus sensu lato has reached this country.

Connectability of protein cages.

Project description:Regular, hollow proteinaceous nanoparticles are widespread in nature. The well-defined structures as well as diverse functions of naturally existing protein cages have inspired the development of new nanoarchitectures with desired capabilities. In such approaches, a key functionality is "connectability". Engineering of interfaces between cage building blocks to modulate intra-cage connectability leads to protein cages with new morphologies and assembly-disassembly properties. Modification of protein cage surfaces to control inter-cage connectability enables their arrangement into lattice-like nanomaterials. Here, we review the current progress in control of intra- and inter-cage connectability for protein cage-based nanotechnology development.

Self-assembled conjoined-cages.

Project description:A self-assembled coordination cage usually possesses one well-defined three-dimensional (3D) cavity whereas infinite number of 3D-cavities are crafted in a designer metal-organic framework. Construction of a discrete coordination cage possessing multiple number of 3D-cavities is a challenging task. Here we report the peripheral decoration of a trinuclear [Pd3L6] core with one, two and three units of a [Pd2L4] entity for the preparation of multi-3D-cavity conjoined-cages of [Pd4(La)2(Lb)4], [Pd5(Lb)4(Lc)2] and [Pd6(Lc)6] formulations, respectively. Formation of the tetranuclear and pentanuclear complexes is attributed to the favorable integrative self-sorting of the participating components. Cage-fusion reactions and ligand-displacement-induced cage-to-cage transformation reactions are carried out using appropriately chosen ligand components and cages prepared in this work. The smaller [Pd2L4] cavity selectively binds one unit of NO3-, F-, Cl- or Br- while the larger [Pd3L6] cavity accommodates up to four DMSO molecules. Designing aspects of our conjoined-cages possess enough potential to inspire construction of exotic molecular architectures.

Food-Offering Calls in Wild Golden Lion Tamarins (<i>Leontopithecus rosalia</i>): Evidence for Teaching Behavior?

Project description:Many animals emit calls in the presence of food, but researchers do not always know the function of these calls. Evidence suggests that adult golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) use food-offering calls to teach juveniles which substrate (i.e., microhabitat) to forage on, or in, for food. However, we do not yet know whether juveniles learn from this aspect of the adults' behavior. Here we examine whether juveniles learn to associate food-offering calls with a foraging substrate, as a step toward assessing whether these calls qualify as teaching behavior. We compared the performance of four wild juvenile golden lion tamarins that were introduced to a novel substrate while exposed to playbacks of food-offering calls (experimental condition) to the performance of three juveniles that were exposed to the novel substrate without the presence of food-offering playbacks (control condition). We varied the location of the novel substrate between trials. We found that food-offering calls had an immediate effect on juveniles' interactions with the novel substrate, whether they inserted their hands into the substrate and their eating behavior, and a long-term effect on eating behavior at the substrate. The findings imply that juvenile golden lion tamarins can learn through food-offering calls about the availability of food at a substrate, which is consistent with (but does not prove) teaching in golden lion tamarins through stimulus enhancement. Our findings support the hypothesis that teaching might be more likely to evolve in cooperatively breeding species with complex ecological niches.

Isomer stability of N6C6H6 cages.

Project description:Recent theoretical studies have identified carbon-nitrogen cages that are potentially stable high energy density materials (HEDM). One such molecule is an N(6)C(6)H(6) cage in which a six-membered ring of nitrogen is bonded to C(3)H(3) triangles on both sides. This molecule is based on the structure of the most stable N(12) cage, with six carbon atoms substituted into the structure. In the current study, several N(6)C(6)H(6) isomers (including the previously studied cage) are examined by theoretical calculations to determine which is actually the most stable. Stability will be evaluated from two points of view: (1) thermodynamic stability of one isomer versus another and (2) kinetic stability of each isomer as determined by the energetics of bond breaking. Density functional theory (B3LYP), perturbation theory (MP2 and MP4), and coupled-cluster theory (CCSD(T)) are used in this study, along with the correlation-consistent basis sets of Dunning. Trends in thermodynamic and kinetic stability are discussed.
