Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease linked to misfolding of the ubiquitous enzyme Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD). In contrast to other protein-misfolding disorders with similar neuropathogenesis, ALS is not always associated with the in vivo deposition of protein aggregates.
