Centromeric heterochromatin comprises approximately 30% of the Drosophila melanogaster genome, forming a transcriptionally repressive environment that silences euchromatic genes juxtaposed nearby. Surprisingly, there are genes naturally resident in heterochromatin, which appear to require this environment for optimal activity.
