Cholesterol, a lipid not normally found in prokaryotes, was identified in purified Chlamydia trachomatis elementary bodies and in the chlamydial parasitophorous vacuole (inclusion) membrane of infected HeLa cells. Chlamydiae obtained eukaryotic host cell cholesterol both from de novo synthesis or low-density lipoprotein.
