Shiga-toxin (Stx) is the cardinal virulence factor of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). The genes encoding Stx are carried by a lambdoid phage integrated in the bacterial genome and are fully expressed after a bacterial SOS response induced by DNA-damaging agents.
