Many microorganisms, as well as plants and fungi, synthesize thiamin, but vertebrates do not produce it. Phosphomethyl pyrimidine kinase is an enzyme involved in an intermediary step of thiamin biosynthesis from purine molecules. This enzyme is absent in humans.
