Two oxygen-responsive regulatory systems controlling numerous symbiotic genes in Bradyrhizobium japonicum were assayed in free-living cultures for their capacity to activate target genes under different oxygen conditions. NifA- and FixLJ-controlled target genes showed disparate relative expression patterns.
