Unexpected degradation of the bisphosphonate P-C-P bridge under mild conditions.

ABSTRACT: Unexpected degradation of the P-C-P bridge from novel bisphosphonate derivative 1a and known etidronate trimethyl ester (1b) has been observed under mild reaction conditions. A proposed reaction mechanism for the unexpected degradation of 1a and 1b is also reported.

Efficient and selective degradation of polyethylenes into liquid fuels and waxes under mild conditions.

Project description:Polyethylene (PE) is the largest-volume synthetic polymer, and its chemical inertness makes its degradation by low-energy processes a challenging problem. We report a tandem catalytic cross alkane metathesis method for highly efficient degradation of polyethylenes under mild conditions. With the use of widely available, low-value, short alkanes (for example, petroleum ethers) as cross metathesis partners, different types of polyethylenes with various molecular weights undergo complete conversion into useful liquid fuels and waxes. This method shows excellent selectivity for linear alkane formation, and the degradation product distribution (liquid fuels versus waxes) can be controlled by the catalyst structure and reaction time. In addition, the catalysts are compatible with various polyolefin additives; therefore, common plastic wastes, such as postconsumer polyethylene bottles, bags, and films could be converted into valuable chemical feedstocks without any pretreatment.

Fe-Cu Doped Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Fenton-like Degradation of Paracetamol Under Mild Conditions.

Project description:A series of carbon nanotubes doped with Fe and/or Cu, Fe100?xCux/CNT (x = 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100) has been prepared by an easy method of wetness impregnation of commercial multiwalled carbon nanotubes previously oxidized with nitric acid. The wide characterization of the solids by different techniques demonstrates that the incorporation of Fe and Cu to the CNTs has been successfully produced. Fe100-xCux/CNT samples were tested as catalysts in the removal of paracetamol from aqueous solution by a combined process of adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation. Under mild conditions, 25 °C and natural pH of solution, i.e., nearly neutral, values of oxidation of paracetamol between 90.2% and 98.3% were achieved after 5 h of reaction in most of cases. Furthermore, with the samples containing higher amounts of copper, i.e., Cu100/CNT and Fe25Cu75/CNT, only 2 h were necessary to produce depletion values of 73.2% and 87.8%, respectively. The influence of pH and dosage of H2O2 on the performance has also been studied. A synergic effect between both Cu+/Cu2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ in Fenton-like reaction was observed. These results demonstrate that Fe100-xCux/CNT are powerful Fenton-like catalyst for degradation of paracetamol from aqueous solution and they could be extended to the removal of other organic pollutants.

Unexpected Rearrangement of 2-Bromoaniline under Biphasic Alkylation Conditions.

Project description:Alkylation of 2-bromoaniline with benzyl bromide under ostensibly basic N-alkylation conditions resulted in migration of bromine from the 2- to the 4-aryl position. Herein we report our studies to elucidate the mechanism of this rearrangement with the objective of suppressing this unexpected outcome. We find that careful choice of reagents is critical, and that this behavior may be extrapolated to alkylation reactions of electron-rich bromo- and iodoanilines in general.

Regioselective Dehydration of Sugar Thioacetals under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Sugars are abundant in waste biomass, making them sustainable chiral building blocks for organic synthesis. The demand for chiral saturated heterocyclic rings for pharmaceutical applications is increasing as they provide well-defined three-dimensional frameworks that show increased metabolic resistance. A range of sugar thioacetals can be dehydrated selectively at C-2 under mild basic conditions, and the resulting ketene thioacetals can be applied to the production of useful chiral building blocks via further selective dehydration reactions.

Unexpected <i>ortho</i>-Heck Reaction under the Catellani Conditions.

Project description:An unexpected ortho-Heck reaction has been discovered during the study of palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) catalysis. Under the Catellani reaction conditions in the presence of lithium salts and olefins, Heck coupling takes place at the ortho position instead of the commonly observed ipso position; meanwhile, a norbornyl group is introduced at the arene ipso position. Systematic deuterium labeling and crossover experiments suggest an unusual 1,4-palladium migration/intramolecular hydrogen transfer pathway. The knowledge gained in this study could provide insights for the future development of the Pd/NBE catalysis.

Pd/Xiang-Phos-catalyzed enantioselective intermolecular carboheterofunctionalization under mild conditions.

Project description:A mild and practical Pd/Xiang-Phos-catalyzed enantioselective intermolecular carboheterofunctionalization reaction of 2,3-dihydrofurans is developed, leading to various optically active fused furoindolines and tetrahydrofurobenzofurans. The key to this transformation is employing two newly modified N-Me-Xiang-Phos ligands ((S, R S)- N-Me-X4/X5) as chiral ligands under mild conditions. Moreover, this synthetic methodology can be efficiently applied to a variety of complex polysubstituted heterocycles with high chemo-, regio-, and enantio-selectivities via introducing diverse substituents on furan rings, which were hard to access by other routes.

Tritylation of Alcohols under Mild Conditions without Using Silver Salts.

Project description:Secondary alcohols were conveniently tritylated under mild conditions within a short running time with tritylium trifluoroacetate generated in situ from trityl alcohols and trifluoroacetic anhydride. No expensive silver salts were needed for the reactions. Four secondary alcohols were tritylated with both mono- and dimethoxy trityl alcohols giving good to excellent isolated yields. The reaction was also tested on four nucleoside derivatives that have primary alcohols. Satisfactory results were also obtained.

Metal-free selective mono-halodecarboxylation of heteroarenes under mild conditions.

Project description:The halodecarboxylation of heteroarene carboxylic acids by treatment with N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide was performed. This procedure provides a convenient route to synthetically useful mono-halogenated heteroarene intermediates such as halo-indoles, -aza-indoles, -indazoles and -aza-indazoles. The mild conditions employed and simple protocol provides an advantage over traditional halodecarboxylation procedures that require expensive and toxic metal catalysts, basic conditions, time-consuming intermediate isolation and elevated reaction temperatures.

Rational synthesis of an atomically precise carboncone under mild conditions.

Project description:Carboncones, a special family of all-carbon allotropes, are predicted to have unique properties that distinguish them from fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphenes. Owing to the absence of methods to synthesize atomically well-defined carboncones, however, experimental insight into the nature of pure carboncones has been inaccessible. Herein, we describe a facile synthesis of an atomically well-defined carboncone[1,2] (C70H20) and its soluble penta-mesityl derivative. Identified by x-ray crystallography, the carbon skeleton is a carboncone with the largest possible apex angle. Much of the structural strain is overcome in the final step of converting the bowl-shaped precursor into the rigid carboncone under mild reaction conditions. This work provides a research opportunity for investigations of atomically precise single-layered carboncones having even higher cone walls and/or smaller apex angles.
