Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) associate with specific proteins forming small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (snoRNP) particles, which are essential for ribosome biogenesis. The snoRNAs are transcribed, processed, and assembled in snoRNPs in the nucleoplasm. Mature particles are then transported to the nucleolus.
