Project description:Objective.We developed a method using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to model the untwisting of the left ventricle (LV) as a damped torsional harmonic oscillator to estimate shear modulus (intrinsic myocardial stiffness) and frictional damping, then applied this method to evaluate the torsional stiffness of patients with resistant hypertension (RHTN) compared to a control group.Approach.The angular displacement of the LV during diastole was measured. Myocardial shear modulus and damping constant were determined by solving a system of equations modeling the diastolic untwisting as a damped, unforced harmonic oscillator, in 100 subjects with RHTN and 36 control subjects.Main Results.Though overall torsional stiffness was increased in RHTN (41.7 (27.1-60.7) versus 29.6 (17.3-35.7) kdyn*cm;p = 0.001), myocardial shear modulus was not different between RHTN and control subjects (0.34 (0.23-0.50) versus 0.33 (0.22-0.46) kPa;p= 0.758). RHTN demonstrated an increase in overall diastolic frictional damping (6.13 ± 3.77 versus 3.35 ± 1.70 kdyn*cm*s;p< 0.001), but no difference in damping when corrected for the overlap factor (74.3 ± 25.9 versus 68.0 ± 24.0 dyn*s/cm3;p = 0.201). There was an increase in the polar moment (geometric component of stiffness; 11.47 ± 6.95 versus 7.58 ± 3.28 cm4;p<0.001).Significance.We have developed a phenomenological method, estimating the intrinsic stiffness and relaxation properties of the LV based on restorative diastolic untwisting. This model finds increased overall stiffness in RHTN and points to hypertrophy, rather than tissue- level changes, as the major factor leading to increased stiffness.

Project description:The insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptors activate overlapping signalling pathways that are critical for growth, metabolism, survival and longevity. Their mechanism of ligand binding and activation displays complex allosteric properties, which no mathematical model has been able to account for. Modelling these receptors' binding and activation in terms of interactions between the molecular components is problematical due to many unknown biochemical and structural details. Moreover, substantial combinatorial complexity originating from multivalent ligand binding further complicates the problem. On the basis of the available structural and biochemical information, we develop a physically plausible model of the receptor binding and activation, which is based on the concept of a harmonic oscillator. Modelling a network of interactions among all possible receptor intermediaries arising in the context of the model (35, for the insulin receptor) accurately reproduces for the first time all the kinetic properties of the receptor, and provides unique and robust estimates of the kinetic parameters. The harmonic oscillator model may be adaptable for many other dimeric/dimerizing receptor tyrosine kinases, cytokine receptors and G-protein-coupled receptors where ligand crosslinking occurs.

Project description:We introduce and demonstrate a method of measuring small force gradients acting on a harmonic oscillator in which the force-gradient signal of interest is used to parametrically up-convert a forced oscillation below resonance into an amplitude signal at the oscillator's resonance frequency. The approach, which we demonstrate in a mechanically detected electron spin resonance experiment, allows the force-gradient signal to evade detector frequency noise by converting a slowly modulated frequency signal into an amplitude signal.

Project description:ObjectiveTo obtain dense spatiotemporal measurements of brain deformation from two distinct but complementary head motion experiments: linear and rotational accelerations.MethodsThis study introduces a strategy for integrating harmonic phase analysis of tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and finite-element models to extract mechanically representative deformation measurements. The method was calibrated using simulated as well as experimental data, demonstrated in a phantom including data with image artifacts, and used to measure brain deformation in human volunteers undergoing rotational and linear acceleration.ResultsEvaluation methods yielded a displacement error of 1.1 mm compared to human observers and strain errors between [Formula: see text] for linear acceleration and [Formula: see text] for rotational acceleration. This study also demonstrates an approach that can reduce error by 86% in the presence of corrupted data. Analysis of results shows consistency with 2-D motion estimation, agreement with external sensors, and the expected physical behavior of the brain.ConclusionMechanical regularization is useful for obtaining dense spatiotemporal measurements of in vivo brain deformation under different loading regimes.SignificanceThe measurements suggest that the brain's 3-D response to mild accelerations includes distinct patterns observable using practical MRI resolutions. This type of measurement can provide validation data for computer models for the study of traumatic brain injury.

Project description:Oscillators are one of the key elements in various applications as a signal source to generate periodic oscillations. Among them, an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is a driven harmonic oscillator based on parametric frequency conversion in an optical cavity, which has been widely investigated as a coherent light source with an extremely wide wavelength tuning range. However, steady oscillation in an OPO is confined by the cavity delay, which leads to difficulty in frequency tuning, and the frequency tuning is discrete with the minimum tuning step determined by the cavity delay. Here, we propose and demonstrate a counterpart of an OPO in the optoelectronic domain, i.e., an optoelectronic parametric oscillator (OEPO) based on parametric frequency conversion in an optoelectronic cavity to generate microwave signals. Owing to the unique energy-transition process in the optoelectronic cavity, the phase evolution in the OEPO is not linear, leading to steady single-mode oscillation or multimode oscillation that is not bounded by the cavity delay. Furthermore, the multimode oscillation in the OEPO is stable and easy to realize owing to the phase control of the parametric frequency-conversion process in the optoelectronic cavity, while stable multimode oscillation is difficult to achieve in conventional oscillators such as an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) or an OPO due to the mode-hopping and mode-competition effect. The proposed OEPO has great potential in applications such as microwave signal generation, oscillator-based computation, and radio-frequency phase-stable transfer.

Project description:A coupled oscillator network may be able to perform an energy-efficient associative memory operation. However, its realization has been difficult because inhomogeneities unavoidably arise among the oscillators during fabrication and lead to an unreliable operation. This issue could be resolved if the oscillator network were able to be formed from a single oscillator. Here, we performed numerical simulations and theoretical analyses on an associative memory operation that uses a virtual oscillator network based on a spin-torque oscillator. The virtual network combines the concept of coupled oscillators with that of feedforward neural networks. Numerical experiments demonstrate successful associations of 60-pixel patterns with various memorized patterns. Moreover, the origin of the associative memory is shown to be forced synchronization driven by feedforward input, where phase differences among oscillators are fixed and correspond to the colors of the pixels in the pattern.

Project description:The effectiveness of solar energy capture and conversion materials derives from their ability to absorb light and to transform the excitation energy into energy stored in free carriers or chemical bonds. The Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn (TRK) sum rule mandates that the integrated (electronic) oscillator strength of an absorber equals the total number of electrons in the structure. Typical molecular chromophores place only about 1% of their oscillator strength in the UV-vis window, so individual chromophores operate at about 1% of their theoretical limit. We explore the distribution of oscillator strength as a function of excitation energy to understand this circumstance. To this aim, we use familiar independent-electron model Hamiltonians as well as first-principles electronic structure methods. While model Hamiltonians capture the qualitative electronic spectra associated with ? electron chromophores, these Hamiltonians mistakenly focus the oscillator strength in the fewest low-energy transitions. Advanced electronic structure methods, in contrast, spread the oscillator strength over a very wide excitation energy range, including transitions to Rydberg and continuum states, consistent with experiment. Our analysis rationalizes the low oscillator strength in the UV-vis spectral region in molecules, a step toward the goal of oscillator strength manipulation and focusing.

Project description:Energy loss due to ohmic heating is a major bottleneck limiting down-scaling and speed of nano-electronic devices, and harvesting ohmic heat for signal processing is a major challenge in modern electronics. Here, we demonstrate that thermal gradients arising from ohmic heating can be utilized for excitation of coherent auto-oscillations of magnetization and for generation of tunable microwave signals. The heat-driven dynamics is observed in Y3Fe5O12/Pt bilayer nanowires where ohmic heating of the Pt layer results in injection of pure spin current into the Y3Fe5O12 layer. This leads to excitation of auto-oscillations of the Y3Fe5O12 magnetization and generation of coherent microwave radiation. Our work paves the way towards spin caloritronic devices for microwave and magnonic applications.Harvesting ohmic heat for signal processing is one of major challenges in modern electronics and spin caloritronics, but not yet well accomplished. Here the authors demonstrate a spin torque oscillator device driven by pure spin current arising from thermal gradient across an Y3Fe5O12/Pt interface.

Project description:Random scattering of light in transmission media has attracted a great deal of attention in the field of photonics over the past few decades. An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a microwave photonic system offering unbeatable features for the generation of microwave oscillations with ultra-low phase noise. Here, we combine the unique features of random scattering and OEO technologies by proposing an OEO structure based on random distributed feedback. Thanks to the random distribution of Rayleigh scattering caused by inhomogeneities within the glass structure of the fiber, we demonstrate the generation of ultra-wideband (up to 40 GHz from DC) random microwave signals in an open cavity OEO. The generated signals enjoy random characteristics, and their frequencies are not limited by a fixed cavity length figure. The proposed device has potential in many fields such as random bit generation, radar systems, electronic interference and countermeasures, and telecommunications.

Project description:Biomolecular logic devices can be applied for sensing and nano-medicine. We built three DNA tweezers that are activated by the inputs H(+)/OH(-); ; nucleic acid linker/complementary antilinker to yield a 16-states finite-state automaton. The outputs of the automata are the configuration of the respective tweezers (opened or closed) determined by observing fluorescence from a fluorophore/quencher pair at the end of the arms of the tweezers. The system exhibits a memory because each current state and output depend not only on the source configuration but also on past states and inputs.
