Polymorphonuclear neutrophils release ATP in response to stimulation by chemoattractants, such as the peptide N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine. Released ATP and the hydrolytic product adenosine regulate chemotaxis of neutrophils by sequentially activating purinergic nucleotide and adenosine receptors, respectively.
