Misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are exported to the cytosol for degradation by the proteasome in a process known as ER-associated degradation (ERAD). CPY* is a well characterized ERAD substrate whose degradation is dependent upon the Hrd1 complex.
